Lord Elgin Hotel - Ottawa

The hotel is very conveniently located in the heart of down town Ottawa, is very clean and looks great. The rooms are standard with little or no pizzazz, but you can get over that knowing that Starbucks offers room service in the morning.

I had a very positive experience with this hotel, as it was right downtown Ottawa. I did experience more expense, as you must pay $25.00 per day for valet parking, but you can come and go as much as you like, so that was good!! The hotel was clean and had quite a nice stay. The only thing that it does not have is free internet or breakfast included. The location was great and we enjoyed the fitness room and pool.

The Lord Elgin is my favorite Hotel in Ottawa, location is perfect, lobby bar is great, rooms very clean, staff great, i left my phone in my room by mistake, called the hotel, they had it in their posession and sent back to me in Toronto in 1 day.

The overhead fan delivering heat was noisy on the first night - we reported it and a mechanic had to remove it to replace it. He said it would be done that day. In fact, he could not do it that day so they delivered a plug-in portable heater to heat the room - just as noisy as the central heating system. On checkout I told them about our experience […] and they offered me a free coffee at Starbucks -I declined - not enough! They could have offered free parking as a reasonable compensation for 2 nights of bad sleep. Les mer

Comfortable, clean old hotel, polite service, valet parking proved to be very convenient. One caveat: we found it tacky for the hotel to provide a large bottle of water -- at $4 each.

walking distance to most attractions. lovely entrance/main floor. Rooms are a bit dated w/ older furnishings, tv, etc b/ pleasant. Beds are very comfortable! I will definitely return.

It's nothing special, only the exterior is beautiful. A single queen room is TINY, had to pay to upgrade to two beds & she wasn't pleasant about it. Crappy old TV, wifi 9.95 in lobby only, so cheap of them to make you pay for it. Whirlpool & pool are so small. Lobby is long & weird. Valet parking is a pain if there is a sports team staying there. This hotel has been blessed with a staff that not only enjoys working there but are proud of the gracious old hotel and its modern improvements. We had excellent service from all and many pleasant conversations with the staff as we went about our events. We couldn't have asked for a nicer, warm, comfortable place to stay.

Hotel was clean, but service was spotty. The person who checked us in was very nice, but I was disappointed that even with valet car service, there was no one to carry our bags from the car to reception (nor vice versa on the way out). The room was clean, though felt a bit institutional. Overall quite reasonable.

We recently stayed at the Lord Elgin to attend a gala downtown. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the lobby is beautiful. With the exception of being woken up a 6:15am by a garbage truck pushing dumpsters around under our window, we had a great time. Parking is a challenge though. No self-parking, only valet, but the drop-off zone only holds 5 or […] 6 cars.... we had to wait at least 10 min to get in off of the street. Les mer

The hotel was in a perfect location for us as we were meeting family and friends for dinner and then on to a pub for a family celebration. We were able to walk to our destinations. We also had the bonus of seeing this years Santa Claus parade. We would definitely go back to the Lord Elgin.

The Hotel is in a great location and close to a lot of tourist spots.. The room needed to have a good cleaning, there were cob webs that hung down in 2 locations on the ceiling, and the sheer curtains were dirty with strikes of black stain. Parking in downtown Ottawa is really bad. The hotel parking was a bit high ...

Hotel has a posh image and we anticipated a real treat however it was one hassle after another throughout the stay. Prepaid for the Executive King and this was to include breakfast buffet, free local calls etc. On check in we were given a regular queen room that was very outdated and cramped. Being tired from travelling, coming from a stay in another […] city in a suite we didn't clue in immediately. Partially unpacked when realized it was not right. Had to produce paper proof of reservation before they would move us. Then they only gave us one breakfast voucher and one needs one per person or else the charge is $18 pp.. Had to hassle to get that corrected too. Clock/CD in room did not work and instead of just replacing it they sent a maintenance guy to the room who insisted that one of us go with him to try out different machines in other rooms!!! Plug in bathroom defective, drapery dusty, skimpy pillows standard although one could request others - just seemed like another hassle. Billed for local calls - again, had to have corrected at check out. Great location but I have never ever had so many hitches in a hotel stay and it soured what was meant to be a splurge. I will say the lobby was lovely with a fireplace. And tent city Occupy Ottawa right across the street did add a special je ne sais quoi to our get-away. Les mer

This hotel has all the right stuff, however, the stuff is getting a little stale. The bed was uncomfortable. All the lights and the TV in my room hummed rather loudly when they were on. The restaurant needs a new menu and some new life. Room service prices are completely outrageous. On the good side there was a Starbucks in the lobby which was convenient. […] The staff was kind and attentive. If you are looking for a hotel downtown this is not a bad place. My opinion---it's time for the Elgin to have a little modernization makeover. Les mer

What can i say. Reserved this hotel for a friend that came for my wedding from Barbados, about a 5 1/2 hour trip. What disgusting service, staff was rude, non responsive and just overall a huge dissapointment. if your looking for location its good, but service isn't. NOT WORTH THE PRICE!

Although we just booked a standard room - for a brief stay and just a place to sleep in, it was very disappointing. There was no comforter for the bed, single sink bathroom (they still exist?); window blinds was dirty; walls were dirty and every part of the hotel looks like it needs a good wipe down if not paint job. I felt like I was in a sleezy motel […] in the suburbs. Great location but many other hotels in the area. I would not stay at this hotel again. For the 3 days stay -I did not meet a single staff who smiled and greeted us as guests. So sad to experience this in such a beautfiul city. Les mer

I was concerned when we booked the room because of limited parking and the need for Valet service all the time. I must say we were pleasantky surprised and the staff went out of their way to accomodate us with our bikes, and having vehicle ready when needed. Location is great for University of Ottawa, and tourist areas, especially Byward Market, and […] Parliament Hill.... Would book this hotel again. Les mer

The only negative comment is the lack of a casual restaurant. We arrived back to the hotel on Monday Sept.5th gasping for a cup of coffee, only to discover that the "Starbucks' (the only place for a coffee) was CLOSED! I guess Room Service would have sifficed, but it's not the same!

Wonderful location at a reasonable rate in a cool historic building. The staff was very helpful when needed. The rooms were nothing special, but altogether it was a good value. Ottawa is a beautiful place.

Ideally located in Ottawa, very close to public transport. Courteous and friendly staff with professional demeanor. Rooms nicely equipped, comfortable and well appointed.

This hotel is in a great location. Within walkng distance to Parliment hill, most of the museums and the Byward market. The room was on the small side and the bed was not very comfortable. All in all I would still recommend it to people. Didn't spend alot of time in the hotel room anyways!! Ottawa has too much to see.

The hotel charged $20/day to use their wi-fi, and it only worked in the lobby (not in the rooms).

We have stayed at the Lord Elgin Hotel a number of times in the past and have been satisfied. Unfortunately our most recent stay was well below the standing that we had come to expect. The room was quite small, and the light from one window very poor. It was also apparent that someone had been smoking in the room at some point and the smell hung around. […] Quite unpleasant. We stayed for two nights in the Lord Elgin in July. We were very impressed with the service and the hotel in general. Comfortable clean rooms, excellent in-room WiFi (free in the business center), and valet parking (worth the money). Perfect location very close to all major down town tourist sites. Five minute walk to the National Art Gallery, market […] and restaurant areas. I would strongly recommend this hotel. Les mer

This hotel is historic but needs the rooms to be updated. The a/c did not work in our room only low speed. You could hear every thing going on threw the walls the exhaust fan did not work well in bathroom. The pool was clean but hot tub was verry dirty did not go in at all we stayed for two nights.Parking 25.00 night was high, great location for do […] wntown. Les mer

Very convenient location. Many local attractions within walking distance. Room was smaller than anticipated and extremely dark. We had booked a room with two queen sized beds, but I think they were double beds.

The Front Desk was very welcoming, Friendly & helpful Their Knowledge of the city and its surroundings was impressive & the staff in the restaurant were polite, fast and very accomodating I would happily recommend this Hotel not just for its location but for the quality & training of its Staff.

There is a huge construction site next to the Hotel that makes a lot of noise very early in the morning (7:00 AM on a Saturday) There is no parking and it took up to 45 minutes to get our car from the valet. Very unconvenient to check in or out because the entrance is always jammed with cars.

I needed somewhere to stay with a few friends for the weekend. We were hitting up the Blues Fest and looking for a good time after the shows. Lord Elgin is conveniently placed in between the festival and Byward Market. Overall great service, fantastic view, and lavish interior. We may or may not have seen the ghost of Elgin himself!
