The hotel is a bit older (probably hence the price) and I noticed quite a few construction crews staying there as opposed to business folks, not that it mattered, just an observation. The hotel staff was very friendly and so were all the patrons that I ran into for that matter! The bed was amazingly comfortable as I expected it might be older, but certainly […] didn't feel it. The room was also very clean. As I arrived on a weekend my original room was not available (not cleaned as they don't clean on the weekends I was told), but as soon as I reported that the manager was very apologetic and I was given another room that was just fine! They told me on the phone that the hotel was renovated recently but it was not. Very dirty carpet in the hallways. The sink was rusted in our room. The new floor had big holes in it. It was gross.

We booked a accessable room with 2 queen size beds. We got a room with 1 double bed. 1 queen or king bed would have been acceptable. The person at the bar did comp us an additional room to make this right which we appreciated very much The shower/tub were inaccessable as the door swung in and did not allow wheelchair access to the tub. This hotel's rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, and the showers were hot. All of these things were good. Also, the front desk clerk was polite and helpful. Also good. Now for the bad. The hotel is pretty shabby. Broken window in the dining area. Doors that are supposed to be only unlocked with a room key to the outside are utterly broken […] so that anyone can just walk into the hotel. I had pretty much the only truly inedible meal of my life in the restaurant--the poor lady making it really tried, and I credit her for that--but she appeared not to be the actual cook (heaven help us if she was) and my turkey sandwich literally had enough salt to double as a salt lick. I LIKE salt, and I could not choke it down--I ate the french fries because comparatively, they had no salt at all! Also, my mom's hotel room had an unidentified smell in it that was so bad she literally gagged when we entered the room. On the bright side, the hotel clerk immediately and apologetically moved her to another room as soon as this was reported. On the down side, her new room boasted an animal living underneath the floor (perhaps under the building itself) that rustled and moved around all night and kept her from sleeping. The hotel is--we discovered on arrival--catering itself to a biker clientele, especially in the bar. We did not, however, have any problems with any other guests. In summary--beds are fine, showers are fine. Rooms are small but ok (unless you get one with an evil smell). However, the hotel has seen better days. I would avoid it unless you are looking only for a money-bargain and don't care about much else. Sorry, guys. :( Les mer

the tap water never got cold and the shower went from warm to too hot without me ever changing it. the continental breakfast was very sad. not much to choose from.

This motel was fine. Not the greatest and not the worst. The people were friendly and pleasant. The pillows were very lumpy. The fun part about the motel was that it was haunted! I had a drawer that opened by itself in my room and my daughter had her bed vibrate 3 times in the night. It wasn't scary but kinda funny.

I saw a few bad reviews before my trip so I wasn't expecting such comfortable accommodations.

The hotel was just fine but I was concerned that the outside doors did not appear to be locked on the evening that I was there.

Great hotel for the money. It's an older hotel but so are most hotels in the area. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Really enjoyed the lounge. Next time I'm in Evanston I will stay there again.

clean but needs a remodel, hallways have a weird smell outside door locks didnt work, electrical outlet covers missing and wires hanging out grout in bathroom floor and large chunks missing.

The front desk staff was very nice and helpful. Room was clean and comfortable. Room rate was great. I would recommend this hotel.

Avoid if you can. Good rate, but the place is completely run down. Landscaping is done, outside door security is almost non-existant. Carpeting is decades old and has roller marks from when the walls were painted -- some time ago. Room was reasonably clean - visually. Who knows what was underneath.

Since my husband and I weren't traveling with children and we both smoke, we thought it would be nice to have a smoking room. However the smell coming in the room was so bad, like the biggest stinkiest ashtry ever. Won't make that mistake again!

Very good room for the price. Only slightly more expensive than Motel 6 (through Hotels.com) and much better.

Felt like a dorm instead of a hotel. .... just a nasty place.

the people were very friendly and welcoming, the room seemed a little older outdated and smelled old in a way but I did feel comfortable and secure and if you need to sleep it is okay I slept will.

This hotel was hard to find. The big sign identified it as "The Lodge" -- and only a small sign right in front of the lobby said "Howard Johnsons." My room had all the amenities of a higher priced hotel, but had the feel of a budget room. it was clean, but old, and barren (blank white walls) and there was black mold in the bathroom. The clock radio […] alarm did not work. There was not light anywhere near the desk. I would not stay at this establishment again. Les mer

The place was not as clean as I expected, but the area of non-smoking was quite nice and clean. The general areas were less clean and had a strong smoking odor. It was safe enough to stay inside the room. Continental breakfast was very limited, but the room extremely clean and orderly.

It had the amenities I needed like microwave, fridge, and iron but upon arriving the lobby smelled and looked like a tavern. The hot tub was out in a gazebo that was poorly lit and it wasn't even hot. The date of my stay was in the middle of winter so I should cut them some slack but it's one of the reasons I chose to stay there because they said it […] had a hot tub. Obviously no one had used it in a long while. I will probably spend the extra $10-15 and stay at the Best Western. That's where I ate dinner anyway. The Legal Tender restaurant at the Best Western had a delicious rib-eye steak and shrimp dinner with a fresh mini-loaf of bread. Even the fries wee delicious. The salad bar was free with the meal but wasn't anything to write home about. Again, the Legal Tender restaurant is at the Best Western. I didn't trust the restaurant at the HoJo so I asked around and people said the steaks at the Legal Tender were good. It was fairly pricey but worth it. Les mer

Our window was broken (glass) as well as others next to our room. Everything was in poor condition.

Staff was great. Friendly and accomodated my request for exta pillow. Room had several amenities like hair dryer, fridge, microwave and safe. Hotel and room seriously outdated. Clean for the most part but smells bad! My husband compared it to beef jerky. Toilet loud and uses what seems like 20 gallons to flush. Neighborhood not so good. We got to hear […] some of the local residents in a heated discussion outside the hotel for about 30 mins. Nice. Breakfast was a joke. We skipped it. Overall, skip this one unless your desperate.
