Vanskelig å beskrive Naniloa; eneste positive med hotellet var sengen som var komfortabel å ligge i. Utover dette er ikke Naniloa et sted jeg ville anbefalt om enn kun for en overnatting (noe vi gjorde før avreise). Har vært på omvisning på Alcatraz og hotellet ga meg samme følelse som de kalde gangene der. Dette er definitivt et "keep-out of" hotell. […] Mange andre alternativer i området og til prisen per rom er dette helt absurd. Skal du til The Big Island vil jeg uansett anbefale å fly til og fra Kona (ikke Hilo) og da unngår du hele problematikken med å bo på dette hotellet. Les mer

Rooms are clean and newly remodeled. Hotel at large is slowly undergoing extensive improvements. I'll stay there again.

Hilo-rainy. Naniloa Volcanoes Resort-depressing. Peeling paint on exterior, random guests in the slowest elevators ever saying 'it reminds me of the Bates Motel'. 35 minute drive to Pahoa beaches/geothermal pools etc.

I was worried, and with reserved expectations, I was pleasantly surprised! The rooms were very clean, and the water pressure was very good for an island. I wasn't sure what to expect for 'breakfast' and it was very crowded with a tour group, so I was not really disappointed.(but it did take an hour to get coffee and toast)- they didnt run out. The staff […] was very nice and very helpful, I think that they are a little understaffed, but the hotel appears to be going through a bit of a transition /recovery, it appears to have a ton of potential from previous 'splendor' and given what it used to be, I think it will be amazing when its complete. There was no restaurant inside to accomodate us when we arrived after 8pm, so we ordered in Pizza from Big Island and it was great tasting! We totally lucked out and got a sunny, rainless day, for our day there,and that made visiting the island, Hilo and surrounding sites, the best possible. We were also able to explore the area, and coconut island (a must see right there) because we stayed at this hotel and looking back it was the right decision. Also having a view of the harbor, we were able to see the cruise ship enter, and that was also a nice surprise. The wi-fi in the hotel worked well in the lobby, and it was easy to get connected. The lobby is open air, so it proved to be a bit breezy and on the cool side for breakfast, I brought a jacket. I think I would stay again, for the money it was pretty good value. Les mer

Not far from the Hotel, about 2-3 miles North, is a great Surfing spot! The People were very friendly! Hotel was comfortable and they had live music for dancing on the hotel grounds with FREE cover on the weekend, also had a special priced Valentines Day meal in the hotel. Over all enjoyable time!

This hotel is in a good location, is cheap, has good working air conditioning, and the hotel staff was nice when I had to deal with them. The building was old and worn out and needs to be renovated badly or put out of it's misery. It looked like people live there, but I couldn't tell for sure. No one that I saw was sketchy. So, the crowd wasn't scary. […] There were a few families from what I saw. I didn't think it wasn't safe, even at night. The room is sufficient if you're just looking for somewhere to sleep. The rooms have hard floors. So, every sound from the hallway or room next door, which is only separated by a thin door, catches your ear. The bathroom was renovated and didn't look like it belonged in the same room b/c it was really nice. The beds weren't very soft, but did the job. There was no wi-fi in the room and the tv was stuck on top of some shelves that served as a closet. I'm not sure it's worth paying over $100 for, but if you're looking for a place to sleep and can't find anywhere else, it seemed safe and the people were nice, which is all that matters sometimes I guess. I'd recommend it only for quick stays or as a base camp for touring the local area if you don't plan on staying in the room at all. Les mer

I am amazed how poorly maintained this hotel is! Depressed property. Not much choices in Hilo and this is a bed with sheets, TV, shower and that is it.

Hilo is a small town... there's really not much to do here. We did a night here because our flight arrived late. There are other hotels along this road. Internet is free but you have to use an ethernet cable which they can also provide at the front desk. The hotel is located right at the bay. It seems like they're trying to repaint the back of the hotel. […] It's a bit dated along with the rooms. There's a free continental breakfast which as always isn't much. Air condition unit was loud. Interesting stay but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're doing a one night stop over or you're on a budget. I would give this hotel 2.5 stars but gave it a 3 because they were helpful and were able to store our luggage for a day while we went around the island to Kona. Les mer

Upon arrival this hotel does not present very well. Exterior , run down and lower 4 floors of the adjoining wing appeared to be closed down. Some of the people in and around hotel did not appear to be guests. Hallways and elevator very dated and institutional. Once inside room things improved a lot, our 9th floor room had stunning view of Hilo Bay, […] upgraded room, new bathroom, and comfortable beds, only problem, carpet, old and not clean.. Very quiet. Overall, we had a good one night stay, the only issue is the first impression of place not all that good, but if back in Hilo we would stay there again. Les mer

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights while visiting the volcano and Hilo. The room looked newly renovated. Ocean view was nice. Bed seemed clean. The tile floor looked dirty, and felt gritty or sandy. For a short stay, not horrible.

This is one of the biggest dives I have ever stayed at. To call it run down would not do it any justice. This place is run down and stomped on. Cheaply modelled in about 1972, it appears that the only attempt they've made to upkeep this hotel is painting one half of one side of the place at some point in the past. So... you have a 1/4 painted hotel, […] that is 2/3 abandoned - you can see supplies stocked up in the windows in some rooms from the ocean side - and one of the buildings was completely abandoned with all the windows wide open - portraying a North Korea elegance. Best of all, after 5 min walking around my room in bare feet, they were black. Overall this place is a to Hawaii. Les mer

I enjoy the history of Naniloa remembering it from its inception to present. It is still the best hotel in Hilo, and affordable. The location is prime, and the view of Hilo Bay with Moku Ola dancing in the water makes for a pleasant stay. The rooms were cleaned daily and in a timely fashion. When I first got to the hotel, I noticed that on one side, there was a set of hotel rooms with peeling paint ceilings and partially boarded windows with wooden planks. I kept thinking to myself, "No way this can't be the hotel I'm staying at.." Turns out that this was Naniloa Volcanoes Resort which was shocking since the pictures online showed nothing […] of the hotel needing so much maintenance. The hallways were dark studded with scuffle marks, the room were also in the same condition as the hallways. I saw ants crawling along the wall in our room on the 9th floor, which goes to show that this hotel also has a pest problem. Considering the price, this hotel was way below expectations. This hotel was great. We wanted to spend a few nights in Hilo, to use it as a base to see the Botanical gardens, Akaka Falls, Volcanoes national park, and Wapio Valley. It was perfectly located. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Room was very well maintained, and so were the lobby spaces. Great harbor view, close to parks and other restaurants. […] The only negative, was that it was almost empty; it seems like not many people stay in Hilo, so only a few rooms of this massive complex were occupied. Renovations on this hotel has begun but much work needs to be done, especially on the outside of the buildings. From our room we saw to much black stuff on the pool deck and on the roof which has a lot of mold growth and plants. the continental breakfast consisted of a piece of toast and coffee.

I stayed at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort in 1997 and it was one of the most wonderful places at a great rate. It had a restaurant, shops, and many guests. Now fast forward to 2012 and I just about had a heart attack when we arrived.The restaurant is gone as are ALL the shops that were located in the lobby area. This hotel says it has a kitchenette, […] which it did 15 years ago - now the "kitchenette" includes a small fridge and a 4 cup coffee maker. the only furniture to sit on in the room is the bed and a small desk chair with wheels. NOTHING else... I called the front desk to ask for a chair because I am disabled and sitting on/in bed is awful difficult and a desk chair (no padding) is NOT comfortable... I was told they COULD NOT get a chair for the room. In order to warm up food in your room, you couldn't do that either. The microwave that is NORMALLY included in a kitchenette is located behind the front desk and only operated by the desk clerk not the customers. The "curtains" in the room are no longer cloth - 3 wooden panels that slide into place. It also had 2 swimming pools and an outdoor bar by the one, now the area with the bar and second pool is closed off and the water in the pool is all black and nasty - smelly...... checked out of the Naniloa and will NEVER go back without looking at the hotel and room first. When I told the front desk clerk how displeased I was, his comment was oh well... Les mer

I have stayed in all the Hilo hotels and I like this one because of free internet,newer furnished rooms and less coqui frog noises at night. The rooms and halls are not carpeted so noise echos but it is seldom a problem. The continental free breakfast is the same as all the rest but not a minus. Since there are no 3.5 or more star hotels for the money […] this is the best place to stay in Hilo. Les mer

The hotel is clearly undergoing some remodeling. The exterior and much of the interior of the hotel common areas appears dilapidated, damp and dreary. The elevators have taken quite a beating and look like they are being held together with duck tape, and one elevator refused to go to our floor despite repeated attempts. The room we stayed in on the […] other hand, was freshly remodeled, clean and attractive - it is just a shame the rest of the hotel did not live up to that standard. At this time, I could not recommend the hotel to friends or family, but it could be a nice place with continued remodeling efforts. I was glad we only spent one night there. Les mer

This is the second time we have stayed at the hotel and decided to pay the extra ocean view rate. We decided to give it another try because we would like to help to get the hotel back to its status of the being an ideal location for stay overs in Hilo. We were given a room over the roof of the lobby which was distracting from the great view of the ocean […] and in particular the bay. The roof is in dire need of repair and we had to look beyond it to get a great view. Since the rooms were not booked it was disappointing that we were not placed in a better location. The staff really works hard and it was sad for us to see the deteriorating condition of the hotel. The room although renovated needed some additions of area rugs to give the room some warmth. The exterior and all public areas of this hotel are in a very sad state of disrepair. But once you're in your room, you'd swear you were in a 5 star hotel. They have completely renovated the rooms in a very upscale way--fully tiled in limestone, very nice Japanese inspired wood cabinetry, very nice bath fixtures. But the hallways, and elevator aesthetics […] leave much to be desired...Oh, and one last thing, don't forget to turn your in-room refrigerator on! Les mer

Very desirable location and great waterfront hotel. However, very low occupancy and common areas need some uplifting in terms of painting or decor. Complimentary breakfast was bland with a sharp cutoff time of 9am which was a turnoff. Rooms had great views and decors within were simple but neat.

This hotel has been in a financial fall for some time and filed for bankruptcy protection just days before my arrival. I will be fair: Ocean front room w/king size: You will get a bed, one office chair, and two chairs on the small balcony, flat screen TV, small refrigerator (the biggest I have had in Hawaii), free internet (very adequate for daily […] e-mail), free parking. Prepare yourself for just the basics. The escalators do work. I will not stay here again just because of the price. I do know I can find better accommodation in the same area for less. The only place, ONLY PLACE, I have seen green sea turtles. I searched and finkally saw some on Oahu (years ago), searched on Kauai, no luck, outside my room on Hawai'i, my balcony room, there they were... Les mer

Overall, good value for the money.The room is clean and modern. The bathroom, especially, is lovely - spacious and well-apppointed. Staff are friendly and helpful. Conveniently located near the airport. On the downside, the floor mats in elevaters are badly in need of replacement. The location and view from our room were wonderful! The hotel is in the process of remodeling, though, and while it will eventually likely be very nice, some parts of the hotel were still pretty shabby looking such as the carpet in the elevators and the outside of the building (only part of it had been reprinted). Also, the clerks acted almost resentful […] toward us, never smiling or helping to accommodate us. For example, we asked for some half and half to take back to our room and we were told "no" even though there was some still some sitting on the buffet table from breakfast. Les mer

While the room was clean, and the bed was passably comfortable, the overall quality of the hotel left much to be desired. The general appearance of the building left an impression of decay. It seemed as if the hotel was at one time very nice, was abandoned, and recently sections were refurbished (shoddily), Much of the hotel did not appear to be operational, […] with guests only in one of the wings. Of the three elevators, one was not operational, and the other two were in a disgusting state, dirty and vandalized. The low quality finishing of the rooms and hallways meant that noise pollution from other guests on the same floor, either intentionally or accidentally, was very noticeable. Our neighbors were clearly audible despite shoving our towels under the connecting door. The floors were finished in tile, both in the halls and rooms, which amplified footsteps and conversations to an unbearable level. There was a nice view of the parking lot, and some ocean from our room. Les mer

The room is far behind what it looks on their website pictures, is not cozy at all: tiny, hard-floor, everything is hard other than beds, absolutely bare walls, you can hear you echo, and you can clearly hear other people steps coming along corridor. I think it's Ok to stay one or two nights there if you get good deal, and all you need is just a place […] to sleep, beds were not bad, pretty comfortable, just turn fan on to keep it going all night to drown other noses coming from corridor.
