The Menger Hotel - San Antonio

You can definitely tell the hotel was built when Americans were smaller than today, but the hotel has been updated and is very comfortable. Wife & I had a very pleasant stay & will do it again.

Beautiful old hotel except for the room we stayed in. It was noisy, small, and almost impossible to take a shower--the temperature fluctuated from hot to very cold. I would not stay there again.

It´s a great hotel with a historical ambience. But they have refurbished and unrefurbished rooms and those have really old bathrooms! So check what you have reserved!

The hotel is very nice. My only complaint was that the bathroom floor needed to be cleaned better.

Prior to this trip I had. Ever heard of The Menger Hotel. It turned out to be very quaint and full of history. It is in a perfect location. Right by the Riverpark and across the street from the Alamo. We really had a great time.

My husband stayed at the Menger several years ago and raved about it. I repeat the raves. It is close to everything...the Alamo...the River Walk...The bar is terrific, although a tad dark! The breakfast buffet was delicious, and we ate too much. Thanks!

I took my 11yr old son to San Antinio for 7 days. The location of the hotel can't be beat. It is in the middle of everything, however, this hotel is not at all kid friendly. There are no refrigerators, microwaves, kids TV channels, even the kid pay per movie didn't work, you can't hook up game systems or DVD players to the TV, the hair dryers came over […] on the Mayflower and over heat in 2 min, the shower curtain rod bent in half, there are no laundry facilities, the exercise room feels like a sauna, the bar ran out of basic liquor, the front desk are very unfriendly and short with everyone, and after sending the 3rd 2 cup coffee maker it finally worked. On the good side the valet is amazing and very helpful, the maid service is also very helpful getting you anything you need, the bartenders are great. The lobby is beautiful and contains awesome history. I would stay here again with my husband as long as I was better prepared and it wasn't a holiday week. I am not a negative person and have never written a review on any of our many hotel stays but I didn't want another family to have the same issues I experienced. It took me several calls and a huge amount of frustration to get the hotel to understand I was coming in a day late but wanted to keep my room and was willing to pay for the night I wasn't going to be there. Reservations are remote and not apparently US based.

Room was cold and smelled musty. Plumbing was noisy. Room service quickly brought additional blankets. Location was great - - close to Alamo and River Walk. Valet parking cost extra.

The hotel was incredible...so much history!! The room was clean and comfortable and the staff was very friendly...oh, and the bar was great! :)

We regularly book the Menger because of it's central location to the Alamo (outside the front door) and the Riverwalk (right behind). We travel with Seniors who are mobility challenged but not wheelchair bound. There are several elevators throughout the hotel, but the walk to the rooms can be long. Also, as this hotel was built in 1856 or so, there […] are stairs in odd places so be sure to call Reservations and explain what you need - they've always helped us. As for the cleanliness, keep in mind this hotel is Historic, so expect to see old tile, old marble countertops, old thickly painted trim. It has been very clean for every visit, but it is not brand new. The plumbing can be a challenge depending on how old the section of the hotel is but it has always worked, just don't be surprised with a leaky shower, or sink faucet. The windows are single pane glass, so there can be a lot of noise coming through. Our last room overlooked the pool, which made it noisy in the daytime for the Seniors that wanted to nap. Evenings were quiet. The floor/cleaning Staff were very helpful with assisting the Seniors into their rooms as the key/card did not have a large direction arrow indicating the correct orientation. My Thanks to them. We have visited San Antonio 8 times, with the Menger being the preferred hotel (6 times). There is a large choice of Hotels in the immediate area but the Menger remains the favorite. Thank you. Les mer

The hotel itself, being a historic landmark, should be visited. I would not recommend booking a room and staying at this location.

The hotel itsel is a beautiful historic hotel but with modern luxury. We walked out the front door to the Alamo and 1 block to the River Walk. The gardens were beautiful and the service was very friendly. I will stay there again when we go back! We loved it.

This was our second stay at the Menger. Our first stay was very pleasent. We stayed in the Babe Ruth Suite and had a very nice experience. This last time we stayed, the room was very disapointing. The room was very small for the rate that we paid, the air conditoned did not work properly and the water in the shower kept changing temperatures from extreme […] hot to cold while in the shower. Really enjoyed our stay the staff was amazing. My fiancé and I went to the spa and had couples message so relaxing the women were friendly and did a great job. Overall great experience can't wait to go baçk

The room were quite small and too warm. no way to adjust the temperature in the room you could only adjust the fan speed. The atmosphere was nice and the lobby and the Colonial Dining room were great.

Right across from the Alamo and a very short walk to the Riverside walkway and the mall, if you like that sort of thing. The open top bus stops right outside the hotel and that was a worth while trip. Food in the Colonial room in the hotel was good. The Meger bar was interesting, the staff were friendly. The pool looks nice though we never had time […] to take the plunge. The garden is pretty. Overall we would choose this hotel again if we visit San Antonio. It is very central and a very interesting place to stroll through with the display cases and pictures to look at. We had a great stay. Les mer

The Menger is wonderful! The staff are friendly and helpful and are happy to share ghost stories with you. The only issue was the shower temperature would change unexpectedly from hot to cold and hot again.

This is a neat hotel close to the Riverwalk. The staff was great, very professional. I didn’t realize there was no free parking, so we opted for $25 a day valet parking which was an unexpected but nice additional fee. The double beds in the room were very cozy (small). I would stay there again and recommend as well.

"Historic" is just the Menger's word for outdated. This place is in extreme need of an update.

hotel was in very good condition, not musky, gorgeous scenery, hotel staff were not friendly at all, checking in, nor checking out did they once say thank you for your stay, how was your stay? I wonder if they are trained to be so uptight?

I will never stay in this hotel again. Once I mentioned that I had made my arrangements thru Hotels.com the seemd to be rude to me. One gentleman even kept looking at me up & down with his nose up in the air. I guess he didn't like my choice of credit card either. Once in the room, the room was extreme warm. I love that we could walk area attractions from the hotel. We also got to spend some time exploring the hotel and admiring the interior decor and museum style showcasings of the original era. The breakfast buffet was delicious, and the kids 6 to 11 ate free!

If you're looking for a hotel rich with history and literally straight across from the Alamo and next to the River walk, this is the best hotel. Otherwise it was a little stale smelling and old.

We totally enjoyed our stay. The food at the restaurant was great, service staff very courteous, hotel is right in the middle of everything in San Antonio.

This hotel had great access to the River Walk and attractions. We arrived late and when I opened the drapes in the morning I was delighted and surprised to see the Alamo across the street! The jacuzzi was hot and the fitness facility was convenient. Room service food hit the spot. Bell-hop was extremely nice. My husband and I have stayed at the Menger twice now and can't wait to go back. Please know that it's not going to be like staying at a Marriott or Hyatt -- it's an old, historic hotel. Some may want to say it's run down -- and truth be told, it could use a little fresher-upper -- but IMHO it's part of the hotel's charm. The location is fantastic -- […] it's directly across the street from the Alamo and about a block away from the Riverwalk. It's close to a lot of the family/tourist attractions like Ripley's and Guiness Book museum. If you decide to give the Menger a try, don't miss the Menger Bar where Teddy Roosevelt gathered his Rough Riders. Make sure you say hello to Travis, the best bartender on the planet -- and try the Bloody Mary. They make the best in town. :) Les mer

I absolutely loved the Menger!!!! It was probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in. The history was fascinating, the place was beautiful, the location was perfect and the people were the best. San Antonio is an excellent winter getaway. STAY AT THE MENGER.

Super location. The staff was really friendly and chock full of history on the hotel and surrounding area. The restaurant was excellent, and the mango ice cream was even better than described. The room could have used a dusting, which is why I gave cleanliness a 4. I'd say give it a try, unless you're afraid of a few dust bunnies.

This hotel far exceeded my expectations. For a facility that has a long history, this facility was amazing! We were within walkling distance to everything that you would want to do and see in San Antonio. We would recomend the Menger to ANYONE!!!!!

The Historic Menger Hotel is an excellant location for a San Antonio trip. The Menger was a nice hotel with a lot of history. If you are looking for a easy stay without all of the glam and contemporary design of other hotels, the menger is just fine. We got a good deal on it and I'm glad we stayed here compared to about $50 more a night at a fancier hotel. I slept well if that matters...

We loved breakfast in the main dining room. Room was simple but how can you put a price on overlooking the Alamo? Saw three ghosts, two in the long hallway and one in a closet. If the like Texas history don't miss staying at the Menger. Ken from Princeton, New Jersey

Great location, easy to get to the Riverwalk, King William District, all the sites downtown. Service was polite and extremely helpful. Beautifully resotred with so much history.

I was nervous as the elevator inspection was expired for about 2 weeks. The next day at the Menger's partner hotel the Crockett across the street also with the same expired elevator inspection one of it's staff members fell 6 feet to her death in their elevator shaft when the doors opened and the car was not there. We left 3 days later and the elevator […] license still said expired. We took our grand kids to the Menger so they could swim and the pool heater was also broken. Les mer

Great location right next to the Alamo, a block from the Riverwalk--very convenient to everything. Beautiful classic hotel. Room was nice and clean, light on available electric outlets. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Mattress was too hard for my liking.

this was a great hotel. Wonderful old world charm, and convient to the river walk. We loved everything about this hotel and we are planning another trip.

Valet parking was wonderful. Double-decker tour bus stops right in front of hotel. Plus, Riverwalk across the street and Alamo next door. New Year's Eve celebration 3 blocks away--great for going back to room after fireworks. Love the charm and Christmas decorations at the hotel. Staff extremely courteous too!

The hotel staff was helpful and friendly . This is a beautifully restored hotel right across the street from the Alamo and steps from the riverwalk. The lobby and grounds were beautiful. The lobby also has some amazing photos and historic memorabilia. The rooms need to be updated but overall they were very comfortable. Great location and very nice place to stay

We went for the history and were not disappointed. The victorian lobby, the Teddy Roosevelt bar and the main lobby all charm. Our room was just o.k. Heat didn't work, carpets buckled in places etc. Time for a rehab. We asked to have the heat checked but it wasn't fixed, and also had poor service one morning in the Colonial Room restaurant. Hence, less […] than satisfied with service. But still, if you enjoy historic places, the Menger is worth a stay. Les mer

There is a certain charm about the Menger. You know its old when you step in, but that is all well, even the rooms are very quaint and clean. All the employees were pleasant and friendly. My wife and I enjoyed our stay.

We have not had a quiet hotel in the last three outings, but the Menger was very quiet even though it was Alamo bowl weekend. The location was as good as you can get without being right on the Riverwalk itself. Only drawback was that the double beds were tiny! Otherwise, great experience and great hotel!
