hotel was in very good condition, not musky, gorgeous scenery, hotel staff were not friendly at all, checking in, nor checking out did they once say thank you for your stay, how was your stay? I wonder if they are trained to be so uptight?

I will never stay in this hotel again. Once I mentioned that I had made my arrangements thru Hotels.com the seemd to be rude to me. One gentleman even kept looking at me up & down with his nose up in the air. I guess he didn't like my choice of credit card either. Once in the room, the room was extreme warm. I love that we could walk area attractions from the hotel. We also got to spend some time exploring the hotel and admiring the interior decor and museum style showcasings of the original era. The breakfast buffet was delicious, and the kids 6 to 11 ate free!

If you're looking for a hotel rich with history and literally straight across from the Alamo and next to the River walk, this is the best hotel. Otherwise it was a little stale smelling and old.

We totally enjoyed our stay. The food at the restaurant was great, service staff very courteous, hotel is right in the middle of everything in San Antonio.

This hotel had great access to the River Walk and attractions. We arrived late and when I opened the drapes in the morning I was delighted and surprised to see the Alamo across the street! My husband and I have stayed at the Menger twice now and can't wait to go back. Please know that it's not going to be like staying at a Marriott or Hyatt -- it's an old, historic hotel. Some may want to say it's run down -- and truth be told, it could use a little fresher-upper -- but IMHO it's part of the hotel's charm. The location is fantastic -- […] it's directly across the street from the Alamo and about a block away from the Riverwalk. It's close to a lot of the family/tourist attractions like Ripley's and Guiness Book museum. If you decide to give the Menger a try, don't miss the Menger Bar where Teddy Roosevelt gathered his Rough Riders. Make sure you say hello to Travis, the best bartender on the planet -- and try the Bloody Mary. They make the best in town. :) Les mer

I absolutely loved the Menger!!!! It was probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in. The history was fascinating, the place was beautiful, the location was perfect and the people were the best. San Antonio is an excellent winter getaway. STAY AT THE MENGER.

Super location. The staff was really friendly and chock full of history on the hotel and surrounding area. The restaurant was excellent, and the mango ice cream was even better than described. The room could have used a dusting, which is why I gave cleanliness a 4. I'd say give it a try, unless you're afraid of a few dust bunnies.

This hotel far exceeded my expectations. For a facility that has a long history, this facility was amazing! We were within walkling distance to everything that you would want to do and see in San Antonio. We would recomend the Menger to ANYONE!!!!!

The Historic Menger Hotel is an excellant location for a San Antonio trip. The Menger was a nice hotel with a lot of history. If you are looking for a easy stay without all of the glam and contemporary design of other hotels, the menger is just fine. We got a good deal on it and I'm glad we stayed here compared to about $50 more a night at a fancier hotel. I slept well if that matters...

Hotel is conveniently located and stay was nice. Breakfast buffet coat more than the room$$$$$$$ and it was ok not worth the 20 per person

We loved breakfast in the main dining room. Room was simple but how can you put a price on overlooking the Alamo? Saw three ghosts, two in the long hallway and one in a closet. If the like Texas history don't miss staying at the Menger. Ken from Princeton, New Jersey

Great location, easy to get to the Riverwalk, King William District, all the sites downtown. Service was polite and extremely helpful. Beautifully resotred with so much history.

I was nervous as the elevator inspection was expired for about 2 weeks. The next day at the Menger's partner hotel the Crockett across the street also with the same expired elevator inspection one of it's staff members fell 6 feet to her death in their elevator shaft when the doors opened and the car was not there. We left 3 days later and the elevator […] license still said expired. We took our grand kids to the Menger so they could swim and the pool heater was also broken. Les mer

Great location right next to the Alamo, a block from the Riverwalk--very convenient to everything. Beautiful classic hotel. Room was nice and clean, light on available electric outlets. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Mattress was too hard for my liking.

this was a great hotel. Wonderful old world charm, and convient to the river walk. We loved everything about this hotel and we are planning another trip.

Valet parking was wonderful. Double-decker tour bus stops right in front of hotel. Plus, Riverwalk across the street and Alamo next door. New Year's Eve celebration 3 blocks away--great for going back to room after fireworks. Love the charm and Christmas decorations at the hotel. Staff extremely courteous too!

The hotel staff was helpful and friendly . This is a beautifully restored hotel right across the street from the Alamo and steps from the riverwalk. The lobby and grounds were beautiful. The lobby also has some amazing photos and historic memorabilia. The rooms need to be updated but overall they were very comfortable. Great location and very nice place to stay

We went for the history and were not disappointed. The victorian lobby, the Teddy Roosevelt bar and the main lobby all charm. Our room was just o.k. Heat didn't work, carpets buckled in places etc. Time for a rehab. We asked to have the heat checked but it wasn't fixed, and also had poor service one morning in the Colonial Room restaurant. There is a certain charm about the Menger. You know its old when you step in, but that is all well, even the rooms are very quaint and clean. All the employees were pleasant and friendly. My wife and I enjoyed our stay.

We have not had a quiet hotel in the last three outings, but the Menger was very quiet even though it was Alamo bowl weekend. The location was as good as you can get without being right on the Riverwalk itself. Only drawback was that the double beds were tiny! Otherwise, great experience and great hotel!

My sister & I recently spent a week at the Menger. The hotel itself is lovely and the location can't be beat! The history of the hotel is amazing too. Our room was nothing special, but then we were budget travelers and took the cheapest available room. Our biggest problem was that our toliet didn't flush well. We didn't report the problem to the hotel […] (it was very busy ... between Christmas & New Years with the Alamo Bowl in town too!) so I guess that was our own fault. Still, if I return to San Antonio I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Menger again. Les mer

No air condtioning, room was hot. Room had Two FULL beds, not Queen. Location of hotel is Fanstastic

This was an intriguing hotel. Although we didn't see any ghosts, we celebrated New Years eve in the Mae West suite and loved wandering thru the history all over the hotel.

I have stayed here several times in the past, but this was first stay in at least 5 years. The hotel facilities and service have declined noticeably - a sad development for an old favorite and a land mark hotel. The room was dated and worse, filthy. Not once during stay did anyone at hotel ask about our room, our stay, or if we needed anything. Felt […] treated like a one and done tourist. Even the service in the bar was indiffereent at best. I went to this hotel for the Christmas weekend and it was excellent! Staff was very helpful, property was very clean and everything was decorated for the holidays. I will recommend this hotel to all my friends.

Our best impressions were with the lobby, great shopping and the restaurant. All downstairs and most in the oldest part of the hotel. Our room was on the 4th floor overlooking the Alamo. Great view, thankfully the window opened because the room was really warm and quite stuffy. There was a pervasive musty smell. We felt we were staying in a high end […] nursing home. The room was tiny, bathroom also tiny. Median age in the lobby and dining area was about 70. Please visit the Menger lobby, bar, shops, restaurant. They are the highlight of this property. Les mer

The hotel is across the street from the back wall of the Alamo! Which is to say its handy to everything. My only word of warning is if you are traveling with a pet, they charge a pet fee instead of the normally refundable pet deposit. Otherwise its a beautiful, historic, and comfortable hotel. Nice central location. I was able to walk to just about wherever I wanted to. I did not ask for much of the hotel so I really cannot review their customer service.

Front desk staff was unhelpful and had attitude...but room was comfy and our view overlooked the Alamo. Room service was nice and promt. Location was the best feature of all, but really I would stay somewhere else next time...much nicer hotels and staff at the other high end chain hotels we've stayed at in the area.

Rooms were small but clean. Location was great and it has lots of historic photos. Has the relaxing feel of a hotel from a bygone era. If you like historic places this is a good place for you.

This hotel was such a great location near the river walk and downtown shops. We were able to do all the walking and when we got tired the hotel wasn't far. We never had to use the car to get to everything. The only negative I had was the mattress in the room was very firm. A little to much for me. Though not located on the riverwalk, the Menger has an excellent location; our room looked out at the Alamo. We actually liked being a little removed. It is quieter and the walk is only one block. Besides being beside the Alamo, it's history goes back to 1859, and the pictures and displays give a sense of that history. Haha the hotel is 'supposed' to be haunted but of course we did not see any ghosts. The hotel is in an excellent location right next to the Alamo. Rooms were nice and clean... Room service when they answered the phone was good.
