Yes, the furnishings of the hotel are a bit older but the overall stay at the hotel was great! I really enjoyed having the living/dining room and kitchen away from the bedroom.

I was not happy with this hotel, I have stayed in many hotels in Columbia that are three star and this is not up to that standard. If you like five points that is convienent ,but the rooms are old and wallpaper is peeling off, the spread had a hole in it and the bed was not comfortable, would never stay there again.

when i asked for king sheets so that i could change them with the stained ones that were on my daughters bed prior to her sleeping in them and by the time i went and retrieved them and brought them to the sixth fl to find they were twin size i had to make do

This may be the best hotel and room we have ever had for the money. Extremely good value and the staff went above and beyond. We had to check out early and the girl at the desk was very helpful, actually more helpful then the "hotels.com" service agent I had to call to get credit. This seems to be a locally owned hotel and is likely why the service […] was so good. If you find yourself in the Columcia area I highly reccomend this hotel. Les mer

Hotel room smelled very moldy. Carpet was stained and kitchen area in poor shape. Reception staff were not friendly and appeared irritated to be working. Breakfast was quite nice and lobby of hotel nice.

I was highly disappointed with my room. For starters the place is due for a remodel. My patio door wouldn't lock so I call'd the front desk to inform about this. A gentleman was sent up to check it out. He informed me that the door doesn't lock and all the rooms on my floor were that way. I was to use a bar in the door instead. When I acted concern'd, […] he asked if I was running from someone (really). That was my major compliant. I won't even go into detail about the dirty toilet. My advice would be stay somewhere else where your safety is not compromised. Les mer

This hotel was closest to my daughter's home which is why I chose to stay there in a one bedroom suite. It was spacious enough but needed repairs on walls and ceilings, a new paint job, and just general updating. It did have a kitchen, if you need to cook and offered breakfast. The staff was fine and the rooms mostly clean, just shabby.

TV not working, had to change rooms at 10 pm at night. Next room TV didn't work. Supposed to be fixed next day, but remote was then removed from room...unable to find. Reservation was mixed up upon check in causing undo stress after a long day of traveling.

The room was spacious, and while it did have a dishwasher, stove, oven, fridge, microwave, stacked washer and dryer, etc, all the appliances except for the fridge were old (from the 1980's). The bathroom was also old and outdated. The thing that bothered me most about the room, was the toddler sized toilet in the bathroom. I honestly can say, that I […] have never seen, let alone sat on a toillet so small. I am not a big guy, and I found this toilet virtually impossible to sit down on if you had to drop the kids off at the pool. The "full" breakfast had only 2 different choices of hot food to choose from. One day it was bacon and scrabled eggs, and the next day it was sausage, buiscuits & gravy. HNothing special in my opinion. If the hotel owners would reinvest some of the revenue generated from room rentals, back into the hotel, this COULD BE a nice hotel..... Les mer

They upgraded me to a 2 bedroom suite which was quite roomy. The breakfast was not very good and there were no computers to use to access the internet. The location is convenient to downtown and USC.

The reviews of this hotel originally made me hesitant to book but i'm very glad that i went with my gut. Not only was the hotel very nice for the price, the location was great for what my night entailed. Very close to Five Points! I got a 2 bedroom suite and only paid for a 1 bedroom so i was more than happy with the room itself. Had all the comforts […] of home including bath and body works products which surprised me since i heard nothing but negativity from online sources. This is not the Ritz Carlton by any means, but if your like me and want to have an amazing stay where you feel at home, than this is your place. FREE LIMO was very nice as well! Free popcorn when we got home from the concert around 2 am VERY NICE TOUCH! love this place will def be back! Les mer

Drawn by the prospect of a 2 room suite- Wow this place is past its prime.. Stains and dirty to the point of a grimy classification, not sure if the first two floors are for assited living or long term care...AVOID.. you may be better off in your car.

We came in to see our son graduate from Basic Training at Fort Jackson. We drove in from Chicago and arrived to the area at 7am for Family Day. After spending the day with our soldier, checking into the hotel was a simple goal but when we got there and met the friendly staff we were so happy. Stayed here for New Years and it was a good bargain. Perfect for what we needed. It was a decent stumble back at the end of the night but the neighborhood was fine so we didn't mind.

I read other reviews and was nervous. But I enjoyed my stay. It was wonderful. I would stay there again and again! Nearby restaurants and area was great! literally the 1 bedroom suite was bigger than my small 1 bedroom apt. LOVED IT!

My boyfriend I have stayed in this particular hotel three time. I first visit was really nice and comfortable, so we decide to do it again. Our second wasnt so pleasant (we decide to go with the single room that visit) and the bathroom wasn't clean at all. Around the sink was digusting. I went to risk the sink out and when the water hit underneath the […] faucet dirt came running down ;( and between the faucet handle were also nasty. The tub hot and cold water knob were on the wrong place. Actually the faucet handle that said hot was actually cold and cold was actually hot. Took a minute for me to figure that out. Thought were going to have to take cold shower that night, And the main button to control the remote was missing off the tv so we had to keep the tv on one channel. (because noone wants to get jumping out the bed to change the tv) :( So, on the third visit we decide to go with the double again because of the first visit the room was much nicer and cleaner. Well not this time. Same problem with the bathroom :(. And inside the extra bathroom the soap dish inside the tub was off the wall sitting on the toilet the mirror was missing off the wall and there were straches on the furniture and wall, my boyfriend call downstair and let them know the condition of the room.,So we wouldn't be responsible for it. I just dont feel comfortable if I know something is dirty. I should feel at home when Im paying money to spend a nice weekend somewhere. Please just consider that the bathroom is the most important part of a place. Les mer

If you are looking for a place to stay while in Columbia than the Whitney Hotel is it. I went for a walk on a Sunday morning around the neighborhood and what an enjoyable experience it was. Very close to the five-points area with an excellent array of local eateries.

A very clean and a very neat surprise. The Sweets are very well furnished and offer a luctury that is notofften found on Hotel.com

My boyfriend booked the room without reading the reviews, so on the drive to Columbia, I decided to read them and became extremely nervous because we got a no refund discount rate. When I walked in to the lobby, the building had an old smoky smell but was remarkably clean. The check-in clerk was very pleasant and knowledgeable and the check-in process […] was fast and easy. As for the room, aside from the furniture being a little worn down, it was great. I felt as if I was in an apartment rather than a hotel room and I learned later that the building use to be a condominium. It is great for lodging with children. I would definitely stay here again. We were disappointed that, twice, we had to ask for the trash to be emptied, ask for coffee, ask that the dirty towels be picked up; and other than replacing towels and toilet paper, the bathrooms and kitchen did not appear to be cleaned. Nothing fancy-schmancy about the Whitney. Conveniently located in Columbia. Plenty of nearby places for good food. A couple of bumps and bruises in the room (one broken blind, shower exhaust fan dying / dead, etc.) but nothing major like mold or bed bugs. The breakfast could be manned a bit better. It’s only open until 9:30AM, but when I went down at […] 9, just about everything was taken. I think I woke up the night manager when I checked in at 3AM…security had to bang on the office door a couple of times before someone came. Kenyatta made up our room every day and was very nice! The front desk could use some concierge type training as well…when I asked about a place for good Southern breakfast, I got Waffle House, Cracker Barrel, and the Pancake House…I found Compton’s Kitchen off of Yelp…and it was DEFINITELY what we were looking for…even if it was on the other side of town. nice comfy place if you have a pet or need the room...older bldg but, cozy and convenient. noted the cleaning staff left a stack of dirty linens/towels in the closet....no biggie, not a hotel snob !

The Whitney in Columbia, SC is convenient to many destinations in Five Points, USC, and surrounding locations. Room (suite) was great for the rate! Larger than I expected, plus came with washer/dryer. Staff seemed courteous. Kitchen was dated, but again I didn't expect too much for the rate. Main drawbacks were just a couple of "basics": 1) No place […] in the bathroom to hang towels, and 2) a total of I think 1 coat hanger in the closets. How much time/money does it cost to add a rod or two so you can hang a hand towel? Besides that, this was a good deal, and I would stay there again (but hopefully they'll add some towel rods and a couple of coat hangers!). Les mer

Not what I expected from a 3-star hotel. Furniture in our room was in poor condition and needed refinishing. It also did not match and seemed to be second hand. The refrigerator did not work and though we were "allowed" to put our refrigerated items in the hotel's kitchen refrigerator, there was no offer to help with that. We had to take it down ourselves […] and bring it back up when we needed something. The hotel offered to change us to another room the next day, but again there was no offer to help with the move. We decided to check out and move to a nicer hotel. Also some of the tile in one of our bathrooms was missing which could be quite dangerous; it appears when the bathroom was remodelled, they simply put new tiles on top of the old tiles and they did not ahere properly. Nutshell - We were satisfied with our suite. The accommodations are minimally maintained, but the rooms were clean and comfortable (as Tom Bodett used to say) and the service was polite and responsive. We would have no problem staying here again. That said, this hotel is not for everyone. I never got the chance to ask about the building's history. […] My guess is that it was a condo or timeshare that may have had a fire or just hit on economic hard times and converted into a hotel. (The parent company appears to be a chain of hotels or at least similar properties.) In any case, a fair review can't gloss over the fact that our room did have some issues with wallpaper that was coming apart at the seams here and there, or that the rooms had not received a coat of paint in probably several years. The appliances were functional but dated and a bit on the noisy side. Certainly the rooms had been only minimally updated since the hotel had opened. I mention these things because they are the sort that will affect the stay of anyone who needs their accommodations to feel new, shiny, and cared for in order to have the best hotel experience. If you are that sort of person, then this hotel is not for you. For me, I value space and a few dings bother me not at all. For about the same price as a high-end standard hotel room (that is, one room with two beds, one bath, and TV/desk in a nice, shiny building) we got what amounted to a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment with a full kitchen and balcony, located at the edge of Old Shandon (historic houses district), ten minutes from Fort Jackson, five minutes from Five Points (shopping district near University of South Carolina) and a reasonably central location in respect to other Columbia amenities or attractions. As an example, the River Banks Zoo was holding a "zoo lights" holiday event and we were easily able to find it and drive to it at a travel time of about fifteen minutes from the hotel. Stayed here one night of honeymoon before heading out on extended honeymoon trip. Had stayed at The Whitney several yrs ago. It is just a shell of its former self. Entrance, decor, room furnishings, bedding all need serious makeover and upgrade. Has that "old school" dated smell and feel. I expected way more. Had only two tiny pillows on the bed. Sheets […] didn't fit the mattress, etc. Priced about 20% too high for what you get and its not quite downtown but rather on the edge of downtown. We stayed at the Whitney in Columbia SC and were extremely pleased with all aspects of the hotel. The suite was very spacious and comfortable. Our dog enjoyed the balcony! The amenities were great. Fresh POPCORN in the lobby. Outstanding breakfast included. Close to everything.

Hotel and their personnel were fine , but the condition of the furniture was not . All of the rooms needed updating and remodeling .

This is not a glamorous or luxury hotel, but it is great! Spacious with 2 separate bedrooms and 2 full baths. Kitchen and washer and dryer. Plus limo service and free bottled water and breakfast. Staff is really nice and helpful. Perfect when you need more space than an ordinary hotel room.

Check in/out was a snap. This hotel is located in a commercial/residential neighborhood very convenient to shops and restaurants of Five Points, a 5-10 minute walk. Very convenient to USC and Fort Jackson. Two bedroom suite with full kitchen and balcony. Rooms were small, but very comfortable and impeccably clean. Nice amenities. I will never stay anywhere else in Columbia! The two room suite was HUGE and had everything you need to live! I was amazed by the car service as well. I called down to get info on cab companies in the area and was told a car service was provided at no additional cost. This hotel was once condo's/apts and when it became a hotel, they didn't gut the inside. So when you get to your room, you have a bedroom, living room, kitchen (with appliances), bathroom, and tons of closet space. Oh yes, and a balcony. The staff is stellar as well. If you're headed to Columbia, this is clearly the place to stay.

This is the 4th time I have stayed here, mainly for the locatio nof the hotel. The Whitney is in the perfect location for Five Points and the Univ of S.C. It has very spacious rooms, full living room, kitchen and a full size balcony, also a full size washer and dryer in a utility type room. So it is like staying in an aparment or condo. I had a 2 bedroom […] on the visit which is the largest. The hotel staff here is the best, better than most 5 star hotels I have stayed in. Those are the pluses. Now for the negatives. The problem is the hotel rooms are dated. The furniture is nice and the beds comfortable, but the kitchen, carpets, walls (wallpaper), bath vanities and tubs are old, old, old, from the 70s? 80s? The lighting in the rooms is atrocious, dark and cold - its because of the lightbulbs (those newer "green energy saving lightbulbs") in every single light fixture except for one of the bathrooms, that created this gloomy environment. The kitchens and appliances are falling apart and some of the wallpaper is torn and coming off. The carpets are dirty and have gum or something stuck on them in some places. If this hotel were updated, it would be the only place I would stay in Columbia. With a little investment this could be a fabulous hotel. Because it is really apartments, there is so much room and the kitchens are well stocked with glasses, cups, etc. but it is all SO OLD! Hotel Whitney was priced reasonably, but smelled a bit smoky and musty. Felt like you're staying at Grandma's house, a bit dated and small tv. Pool was closed during our stay, because it rained and they didn't clean it.... Staff was nice and helpful.

Overall, we were satisfied with The Whitney Hotel. The location was very convenient. The personnel were very helpful. We liked having a suite instead of only one room. For the price we paid, the value was excellent.
