It met our needs. We would consider staying there again.
"Fine for the price"
Not a fancy hotel but it was clean and the beds were comfortable. It was fine for the price, I have paid more for a lot worse. Bring your own fluffy pillow and toiletries. There was coffee in the room but no frig.

After shutting the door at first entry, the room was hot. The wall air conditioning system was filthy with a need to have dust balls brushed off, and didn't work well at all! The bathroom fan made noise when on and had its cover hanging off the ceiling as if being worked on. I mentioned this to the fron desk at departure the next morning. "Howard Johnson express Redding, CA ...total dump!"
This place is literally falling apart at the seams! Walkway to the room on 2nd floor was bare plywood, no heating or air conditioning working in room. They provided a very small space heater to plug in. The door had huge gaps in between the frame, beds like hard rocks, no toiletries provided. So NOT worth the $70 I forked out. Howard Johnson's was not the hotel I used to remember. The shower knobs to turn the water on and off was awful. My kids just about scolded themselves it was do hard to adjust. The beds need to be replaced. It felt like we were sleeping on springs. It's ok for a last minute overnight, but beware of the shower knob.... They do accommodate for pets.

the hotel staff was pretty good, knowledgeable and provided needed information when asked questions. However, the room feel far short of what one would expect as a "Clean" Room. The main room section was maintained/clean, but the bathroom had mold in the top corners of all the walls, base of walls in the shower and a little in the sink area above the […] mirror. i would not reccomend this hotel to another friend or family and I will probably not stay at this particular hotel again either. More than likely pay the extra $$ to stay accross the highway ina few months. Les mer

Place is a dump. Staff friendly, condition of the place is nothing close to the picture, and its a low budget motel. A hotel by no means.

"DO NOT STAY HERE!"
Had to give them $1.50 on my cc to have the convenience of a safe in the room which was refunded on cc at checkout that takes 7 business days. Put in a handicapped room, when questioned could we have nonhandicapped no this was the room assignement per hotel.com. Ok don't remeber that. Noticed many rooms avavilable nonhandicapped. This is New Years Eve […] and only 2 other cars in parking lot. Room ONLY had a space heater - which I worried about all night good sleep NOT! No hair dryer. Shower hand held only and water hard to regulate temp. Very subpar! Dump. Les mer

"Get what you pay for"
The staff was courteous, the price was right and the shower felt great! However the light walls and heavy I-5 traffic made a deep sleep impossible. Room was clean but well dated. Except the chairs, they really should be thrown out.
"Not the worst, but certainly not the best"
For the price it is not horrible, but it is a bit run down, noisy freeway is right there. They do not provide fridges in the rooms, and they are a bit out of date. Could not get on thier wi-fi system thus it was a bit dreadful. DKH

Don't understand why Hotels .com would even have this hotel on there list. It was dirty, the rooms just made the stay a bad one. From dirty bath rooms to the worst old beds and decor. It was the complimentary breakfast finished it off. They had 2 types of cereal and stale breads and donuts along with 2 kinds of fruit drinks. Coffee was also terrible. The […] pool was the best part of stay and it was dirty but when it's 104 deg. This should be a $40.00 hotel at best. Les mer
"Pick another hotel- Gross and not safe"
I have booked some cheap hotels on this site, and they have been okay, but this place was disgusting and scary. I didn't even want to remove my shoes in the room. The mattress and bedding were incredibly old and seemed very dirty. The AC or heating unit, don't know what it was because I didn't go near it after I saw black mold on it, looked all smashed […] up. We got there around midnight, otherwise I would have gone somewhere else. There was a ghetto guy cussing and yelling outside our room all night. It was hard to sleep with his yelling and being worried my car would get broken into. At one point, some other guy came out and told him to be quiet, I heard the ghetto guy cuss at him, a loud thump, then nothing. Thought that would be the end of it, but no. The guy came back about 5 minutes later and restarted his incomprehensible ranting and profanities. The next morning, after no sleep, I thought I would make some coffee, though when I pulled out the basket, a roach fell out and scurried away. The shower curtain rod wasn't hung right and the curtain slides to the middle of the rod and lets water spray everywhere in the bathroom. The bathroom door wasn't flush with the wall, so even if you shut the door and lock it, someone can look through the 2 inch gap and see you doing your business. Generally, just disgusting, pieces of the wall peeling off, gross place. Needless to say, we checked out as early as possible and will not be returning. I would have gotten more sleep in my car. For the money I spent, I know I could have gotten something decent. I'm really not too particular as long as it's clean and pretty safe. Les mer

This was the second Howard Johnson I stayed in on this trip to the US, first in Newark airport, both left much to be desired for, but this Redding one was much more dissatisfying than the first the overall first impression of entrance to car park and building was disheartening, too many work lorries in car park, the pool water was murkey. We were very disappointed in our room. The air conditioner had not been cleaned in a long time 1 inch of dirt inside the fan. The Toilet inlet hose was leaking when we got there and we were told to put the ice bucket under it to catch the leak. The shower stall had been broken and patched with a brownish glue and had not been cleaned properly. The faucet […] covers had green growing under them and did not work properly so was hard to adjust the shower. The bedspreads had holes in them. The floor hadn't been cleaned properly. The fence around the pool was ready to fall and the pool was dirty. When we asked for a different room they said they were booked up and since we had made a reservation on line we couldn't get our money back. We would advise not staying there! Les mer

The Staff at the Hotel were friendly and helpful, but i felt for a hotel labeled as a "Howard Johnson" that it would have been a little more modern, and not as run down looking as it was. It filled the need for the night, but i think i would rather stay someplace else in the future.

HoJo is usually a decent place to stay, but this one is in dire need of fixing, updating, carpet cleaning, new sheets.... friendly staff is the only blessing here, but I wouldn't stay there again unless the hotel get's a major overhaul.

We were in a pinch on the last leg of a road trip and so went on online to get a room for the night. HJ hotel seem like a safe bet so I booked it. When we got there I was shocked at how bad of shape this hotel was. The staff was nice but the rooms were gross and dirty. I expected way more for the price that I paid for the night. I have stayed in hundreds of hotels. We just needed a clean place to sleep and this was not it. A one star rating would be too high. Very dirty, damaged walls, furniture, broken tub, Bad sheets with holes in them. The guy at the desk was very nice but had the worst personal hygiene I have ever seen.

"cheap & noisy"
It was o.k for the price we paid. It was fairly clean. Poor insulation or perhaps no insulation at all: you could hear your neighbors conversation. Very old, uncomfortable mattresses. It was the cheapest hotel in the area though.
"Worst motel ever"
There was absolutly nothing welcoming about the room. The TV barely worked. There was water on the bathroom floor before any use. The bed was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever tried to sleep on. Not to mention the torn blanket and bricklike pillows.

Bathroom was dirty, used soap in the shower. Air conditioner was very old with part of front missing and extremely loud. The smoke detector had been disassembled by the management so that the steam from the shower would set it off.

I would rather sleep in the back seat of my car. The room was old, run down and dirty. The other guests seemed like they were running from the law and our room didn't have a working phone that we could use to call 911 if we needed it. "Pictures can't express the odor"
I knew I had made a mistake when I pulled into the parking lot. There's a reason there are no pictures of the exterior of the hotel. Still, I gave the place the benefit of the doubt and went into the office. The person who checked me in was polite and professional. I took my key and hoped for the best--or at least, not the worst. Instead of the spartan […] but clean and serviceable room I had expected, I found a run down and fetid smelling room. The bathroom was clean. But there was no getting around the stink of the rest of the place. I got an immediate sinus headache even though I turned on my heels and returned my room key, deciding to forego spartan and check in at the luxury hotel down the road. The bad news is, I still had to pay for the Howard Johnsons room. The good news is, it wasn't a whole lot of money. The only reason to stay at this hotel is if you can't afford to stay anywhere else and aren't up to camping out in your car without a shower. Still, I would recommend sleeping in your car and just using the clean bathroom. Les mer

A bit of a dirty run-down building. Pool was tiny, and you have the opportunity to smoke in the pool area. We had two top sheets on the bed, instead of the elastic bottom sheet that doesn't shift around! The room was decorated with two of the exact same framed pictures. I found the dirty with grime on the inside of the door. Bed was uncomfortable with pancake pillows. Noisy and paper thin walls. Would not stay there again.

The heater did not work in our room, so they moved us to another room. The front desk personal were very accommodating. The hotel itself was old and needs to be updated, but was clean and was close to the freeway.

This would be a type of place for a 1 night stay... we stayed 3 nights the beds were aweful the shower looked like it was a lake it was dirty... they cleaned the room one time and they didnt leave anymore washclothes... the staff was very nice and if it was for one night it would have been ok but i will look into something better for a longer stay

Very disappointing. Condition of bathrooms were low class. Spider webs were in corners and heater vents. Breakfast was poor quality and not enough for the team we had brought to stay there. We had 6 boys and 2 coaches.

"Biggest dump I've stayed in at least 5 years"
This was the biggest dump I've stayed at in at least the last five years. The windows were FILTHY, the door locks didn't work -- I actually considered sleeping in my vehicle instead (the only thing that prevented me from doing is was that the temps were in the 20s).

You get what you pay for. Hotel is older and not very well maintained. Its decently clean, but everything is old, used and worn. You can feel the springs on your bed, there's holes in your sheets, bathroom door had water damage, etc. The customer service/front desk is real nice though. I guess with a small budget I rather stay here than in a cheep hotel […] on Market street where its even more sketchy. The biggest complaint is the noise in the middle of the night of people coming in late...someone even knocked at 2am, which we ignored!!! Les mer
