Peaceful and comfortable stay in York whilst attending close relative's funeral. Good location next to rail station as we travelled by train from London. Good, clean, spacious room. Enjoyable breakfast. Good service.

We made a complaint about the room whilst we were there and also to the company and awaiting repsonse. The hotel itself was beautiful and breakfast was lovely. Our room was on the lower ground, it was extremly cold had to ask for a heater and showered in the spa, it was fitted for people with disabilities and very out dated compared to the other rooms. […] We went and spoke with a cleaner to look at another room which was lovely and she said they get alot of complaints about these and they said herself that they are horrible rooms. If i had to go back to the hotel i would only go if we would not get a lower level room because at least i would think we got our monies worth. It was extremly poor standard and I have paid alot less and had a much standard of room. Les mer

I must say that after booking the hotel site unseen from Australia by the internet, we were extremely disappointed upon arrival to find the car park full and were forced to park in a gravel area way from the main building, once booked in wEre sent to the lower level bedrooms, our room had a mouldy smell, it was extremely noisy, wifi non eXistant, never […] asked at any stage if we enjoyed our stay, however great location, York was fabulous. On arrival at the hotel, I was pleased with my choice. However, it is a 4* hotel and I was disappointed with the wait/queue at the reception. Romm was comfy, but could 'hear' guests in the next room, was not pleased with this. Location was ideal.

staff very helpful and friendly, great location, room fine but did feel like we didnt need a visit to the local dungeon as we were staying in one!! five rooms down in the basement of the hotel, stuck out the way with people walking directly past the bedroom window opposite the royal mail depo. we couldnt leave curtains open as people could look straight […] in. Not the cheapest hotel I've ever stayed in, especially as we were in the "Garden Wing", however, the cleanliness, comfort and noise levels were fine. The restarant was very nice, great service, excellent food and good value too. The location is ideal for walking access to York, and parking was easy in the grounds.

We stayed for a long weekend and location is perfect (just next to the station) and within easy walking distance of the centre. Hotel staff really helpful and rooms lovely. Will stay here again when visiting York as also good value.

It's a gorgeous building in a pretty good location, however the rooms are minuscule and lack some modern amenities. The beds are small and uncomfortable and there's no temperature control whatsoever. The windows open, but just barely, and when they are opened all you can hear is the sound of trains. Every room door slams shut, so all morning there is […] the constant sound of slamming doors. It makes it incredibly hard to sleep past 8am. For the price I paid for this hotel, I would have expected much more. I don't think I've ever stayed in a 4 star hotel with such tiny rooms, or uncomfortable beds. I would recommend spending the same money on one of the many much more comfortable b&b's in York. We booked our stay at the Royal York to celebrate our 11th anniversary and we were as happy with our stay as we were all those years ago. Our room was comfortable, clean and tidy, we had a huge bed and the service and food was excellent, the staff helpful and courteous. It is impossible to fault the location of the Royal, literally minutes walk from […] city centre and all areas of interest. We will return as soon as we can and we would most definitely recommend this as one of the top hotels we have stayed in Les mer

Absolutely fabulous hotel. I read the reviews before I arrived and to be honest was a little disappointed so I psyched myself up for a great trip to York, but not to be too disappointed with the hotel.... Seeing that our allocated twin room was not the requested double, we experienced a very disappointing start to our stay at the Royal York Hotel. However due to the intervention of Audrey, a member of the management team, we were able to thoroughly enjoy our short break. Audrey explained that she had no spare rooms but then went on to offer a bottle […] on the house as compensation. Her 'can do' attitude was so refreshing, she was so personable and from our observation also seemed to be doing a fantastic job at breakfast, behind the bar and even fixing the coffee machine. She cleverly turned a difficult situation around and we left the hotel with positive thoughts that we would return. Les mer

We stayed in room 213 on a Thursday night for dinner bed and breakfast for a romantic getaway. The hotel is old and has a lovely ornate staircase, and our room was very spacious with a dual aspect. The bathroom grouting was old and no longer white, and there was a little stain on the valence on the bed but other than that it was clean and attractive. […] The bed was huge - 6ft wide, and not 2 beds joined together. The feather duvet and pillows were amazing (allergenic ones available on request). The room had blackout curtains, and old sash windows which unfortunately don't keep much noise out. In the morning I was woken at 5:30am by the sound of metal clattering outside (bins?) and then again maybe every 30mins by some trains using their brakes when entering the station. My boyfriend didn't wake up though! I heard no train announcements. The maid did keep knocking after about 8am, so be sure to put the don't disturb sign out if you want to try and get a lie in. I'd also try requesting rooms at the opposite side of the hotel to the station. Dinner was fabulous - a choice of 5 or six starters, mains and deserts with great service, a bottle of wine will set you back £20. Breakfast was ok - the usual 4 star hotel hot and cold English and some Continental buffet. The hotel is only a 5 minute walk to the shops, and there is an old pub with real ale across the road. Car parking cost £10, we paid on checkout but returned to have the ticket validated later so we could go into York. Les mer

Ideal location for the shops. Good facilities but room and hotel generally in need of being updated as a bit shabby. Breakfast not very good quality and poorly cooked. Our room backed onto bins which were emptied at 7am in the morning! Glass bottles being emptied from a large height right under bedroom window. On checking out made to pay £10 for parking […] even though barrier was up. Guy on reception very rude and abrupt. Overall, not what you would expect from 4* hotel. Les mer

Just outside York station, so very easy to find, and only a 5 minute walk into the city, hotel was traditional, the food was of high quality and the rooms were comfortable. Very soft bed though! well worth staying and i would consider again.

On first entering it seemed a little old and tired, but this just added to the overall character. The staff were friendly and efficient and the service was outstanding. Best of all was the location - near enough to York city centre to walk everywhere, far enough out to be away from it. Drinks in the bar were exhorbitant, as was the cost of dinner for […] what was essentially a cafe type menu. But overall this is an excellent hotel. Les mer

The original room we were allocated had issues - over looking the station, cramped and very stuffy. Safe did not work either however after one call to the reception the concierge and maintenance man arrived within minutes. We were offered an alternative room in the garden wing which was far better and more spacious than the previous one. Hotel location […] is excellent position for exploring York. Les mer

We stayed one Night for a wedding reception in the evening so hotel served purpose. The Room was clean smallish with a double bed in. It which you had to walk round one side along the wall to get into bed. If we were staying for more than one night I would have asked to be moved. BUT hotel prices anywhere in York are a rip off, I would stay again here […] as the hotel has character from a bygone age. Les mer

Our room was in the "garden wing", a dingy modern addition to the hotel. The room had quite dated furniture and horrible mattresses. There was a slight gutter smell coming from the bathroom which was very dated, too. The taps to control the shower were so worn out they didn't properly work anymore. Out of the 9 channels on offer on the old TV some like […] BBC1 seemed to be received the analogue terrestrial way and had quite some "snow" in the picture. The windows didn't open and the AC was quite loud so the room got quite warm during the night. In the morning I realized that the cause of the constant knocking sound was a radiator which was actually on despite the AC having been set to a chilly 16C when we arrived. Overall I wouldn't have expected this from a hotel of this reputation and would definitely not go back. Les mer

Have visited this hotel a few times and it is lovely but this time I was in one of the conference rooms which wasnt as spacious as the original rooms. . and quite a way from reception.The radiator was on in August which didnt help! The window didnt open either.. The room was really clean and facilities were good ..noticed pay an display is in car park […] now although but price wasnt bad.Think this hotel may of been taken over by a group. Les mer

Only disappointment was at getting allocated twin room rather than double however booking was via 'Summer special saver' offer and double not guaranteed. The room was adequate, comfortable and clean. Communal areas of the hotel were very impressive and the staff from reception to bar to concierge were pleasant and helpful.

The overall hotel is very good in appearance and condition. The rooms however were very poor and the "double bed" is the smallest I have seen in my life

We almost disregarded this hotel due to the negative comments people had left previously. What we found was a hotel that was superbly situated in the centre of York, that was clean and tidy, and with room that had been refurbished to a high standard. The only problem we encountered was with the type of bed (we requested a double at time of booking, […] but were given a room with 3 single beds). Staff were friendly and attentive, parking was a slight issue (not enough spaces), but gym and pool facilities were excellent. Would stay again. Les mer

we got to the hotel early and a sign read no parking spaces but we went in anyway and found a space. receptionist was very helpful and checking in was no problem. room was large and very clean and was in the garden wing next to the station but was quiet. health spa was excellent and breakfast was buffet style but nice.hotel looks a bit dated overall […] but its not meant to be modern. two very good nights sleep. Old hotel looks a little grubby from outside, inside better though a little creaky, good staff and all the basics although no air conditioning which would have been nice

The chambermaids disturbed me almost everyday Even I was still in the room, they knocked the door to ask if it was necessary to clean the room. The environment was quiet noisy especially the room next to rail station. Some of clerks were not friendly as well.

Dette er det gamle jernbanehotel, lige ved stationen, men også tæt på byen - middelalderbymuren ligger lige over gaden fra hotellet, og der er 5 minutters gang til centrum. Fin stor have lige udenfor, hvor der også er godt med parkeringspladser. Hotellets interiør bærer præg af 100 års anvendelse men er rimelig velholdt.
