Royal York Hotel - York

Royal York Hotel er et helt greit hotell for de som ønsker å bo sentralt i York. Hotellet ligger i umiddelbar nærhet til togstasjonen. Rommet var greit, men selve hotellet bar preg av å være både gammelt og noe slitent. Ikke et 4 stjerners hotell sett ut i fra norsk standard, men helt ok for et par netter.

On first entering it seemed a little old and tired, but this just added to the overall character. The staff were friendly and efficient and the service was outstanding. Best of all was the location - near enough to York city centre to walk everywhere, far enough out to be away from it. Drinks in the bar were exhorbitant, as was the cost of dinner for what was essentially a cafe type menu. But overall this is an excellent hotel.

The original room we were allocated had issues - over looking the station, cramped and very stuffy. Safe did not work either however after one call to the reception the concierge and maintenance man arrived within minutes. We were offered an alternative room in the garden wing which was far better and more spacious than the previous one. Hotel location is excellent position for exploring York.

We stayed one Night for a wedding reception in the evening so hotel served purpose. The Room was clean smallish with a double bed in. It which you had to walk round one side along the wall to get into bed. If we were staying for more than one night I would have asked to be moved. BUT hotel prices anywhere in York are a rip off, I would stay again here as the hotel has character from a bygone age.

Our room was in the "garden wing", a dingy modern addition to the hotel. The room had quite dated furniture and horrible mattresses. There was a slight gutter smell coming from the bathroom which was very dated, too. The taps to control the shower were so worn out they didn't properly work anymore. Out of the 9 channels on offer on the old TV some like BBC1 seemed to be received the analogue terrestrial way and had quite some "snow" in the picture. The windows didn't open and the AC was quite loud so the room got quite warm during the night. In the morning I realized that the cause of the constant knocking sound was a radiator which was actually on despite the AC having been set to a chilly 16C when we arrived. Overall I wouldn't have expected this from a hotel of this reputation and would definitely not go back.

Have visited this hotel a few times and it is lovely but this time I was in one of the conference rooms which wasnt as spacious as the original rooms. . and quite a way from reception.The radiator was on in August which didnt help! The window didnt open either.. The room was really clean and facilities were good ..noticed pay an display is in car park now although but price wasnt bad.Think this hotel may of been taken over by a group.

Only disappointment was at getting allocated twin room rather than double however booking was via 'Summer special saver' offer and double not guaranteed. The room was adequate, comfortable and clean. Communal areas of the hotel were very impressive and the staff from reception to bar to concierge were pleasant and helpful.

The overall hotel is very good in appearance and condition. The rooms however were very poor and the "double bed" is the smallest I have seen in my life

We almost disregarded this hotel due to the negative comments people had left previously. What we found was a hotel that was superbly situated in the centre of York, that was clean and tidy, and with room that had been refurbished to a high standard. The only problem we encountered was with the type of bed (we requested a double at time of booking, but were given a room with 3 single beds). Staff were friendly and attentive, parking was a slight issue (not enough spaces), but gym and pool facilities were excellent. Would stay again.

we got to the hotel early and a sign read no parking spaces but we went in anyway and found a space. receptionist was very helpful and checking in was no problem. room was large and very clean and was in the garden wing next to the station but was quiet. health spa was excellent and breakfast was buffet style but nice.hotel looks a bit dated overall but its not meant to be modern. two very good nights sleep.

Old hotel looks a little grubby from outside, inside better though a little creaky, good staff and all the basics although no air conditioning which would have been nice

We thought it would be worth the extra money to stay in an historic hotel in York, but we were wrong. The room we stayed in was on the second floor by the street. We left the windows open because the room was stuffy, so we had street noise most of the night. The shower "door" didn't cover the shower, and water leaked all over the bathroom. The restaurant was outrageously expensive (about $20 USD) for the cold breakfast buffet (cereal, fruit, etc) and the hot food was even more. And the mattress on the bed sagged in the middle. The only positive was its location adjacent to the train station. Very disappointing for the money it cost!

Very small room, supposedly double bed! Light fitting which descended from ceiling to less than 1 meter from floor. Very expensive drinks with no table service. Dining room cold at dinner, but heating on full blast at breakfast. Not value for money - will not return and will tell others!

Good hotel for one night stay, many York hotels are minimum 2 night stay at weekend (including Royal York if you book direct!). Room was small and overlooking back of station, but no real noise problem. Clean and comfortable, excellent breakfast, friendly helpful staff. Will be happy to use again.

This was our second visit to the hotel following a really enjoyable stay in 2008. The breakfast was once again excellent and the ambience of the hotel was great. However, this time we were given a room that was the size of a single with a double bed squeezed in. Although this room was more modern than the last time we stayed, there was so little space that there were no bedside tables.

Hotel is ideally located for those arriving by train as situated next to station. We arrived by car and found hotel easy, charge for parking at hotel but good to know car parked securely for stay. Hotel staff polite, helpful and service excellent. Breakfast was great set you up for day's sightseeing and shopping. Situated about 5 minutes walk from all York has to offer. Our room looked over the railway sheds but as you don't stand looking out of window for too long did not matter. Noise from trains minimal.

The hotel is very conveniently located next to the station. Check in was efficient and our room was on the 1st floor overlooking the gardens with a good view of York Minster. The room was very large with a double and single bed and a large bathroom. Unfortunately the window in the bathroom was very large and cold and the only heating was the towel rail, as the weather was cold the room also got cold. After 2 days we realised the outer window was open and after closing this the room was a bit warmer but still not ideal. the bed was comfortably. The TV had some extra channels but not all the freeview ones. The breakfast buffet was very good.

The hotel itself looks very grand from the outside. The entrance, reception, bar and restaurant very grand also. Unfortunately a VERY limited time is spent in these areas and its the room you spend most of your time in and its the room that GREATLY lets this hotel down. The room was incredibly dated in both style and substance and i would suggest all rooms need a serious facelift. The room itself is rather small, the bathroom is tiny, the double bed was uncomfortable, the pillows were lumpy and lifeless, the decor was dated, the TV was like something out of the ark. In short the rooms are simply basic and of 2/3 star quality. Certainly not the quality that you would expect of a 4 star hotel. Having said that i would like to add that the service within the hotel is first class, all members of staff, from receptionists to cleaners to bar staff could simply not do enough to help you. Just a real shame that the room quality has somewhat soured our stay in the Royal York Hotel.

The building and public rooms look impressive but the bedrooms leave a lot to be desired. Our "double" room was so cramped they could only fit a bedside cabinet on one side, and getting in and out of bed was a struggle. Our worst room ever, not what you expect of a 4 star hotel. We won't be returning.

Very nice hotel and locations. When we first checked in we were given a very small, very very cold room, i think this was we had got internet rate. I expressed that the room was freezing and they moved us to a warmer room. Very pleased with the service and its a great place to stay.

Very convenient fcr railway station and city centre. All main attractions within easy walking distance. Very spacious room.

The hotel/grounds were as lovely as the pictures show however the entrance from the car park let it down a bit. It is small & there is no ramp for suitcases/wheelchair users. The reception area is quite large but the checking in/out desk is small & there was often lots of people waiting around to be seen. The staircases & hallways are especially nice, although the carpets & some of the decor was dated & looked in need of some attention. The same applied with the room, everything was a bit of a mismatch with grubby looking carpet & ill fitting linen on the bed. The bathrom did look as if it had a refurb & was spacious & more modern looking. It was just bit of a let down from the photos we had seen. The bar was modern,laid back & had a soft quiet atmosphere. We did not have breakfast there because nowhere (apart from inside the restaurant i presume) was there any detail of what was on offer or how much it cost. And talking of cost I think it is slightly overpriced. The car parking (considering it is on site) is extortionate & you can't seem to find anywhere on the net including this site & their own that offers bed & breakfast- which I would expect from a hotel of this calibre. The sports facilities were nice, I only used the pool & jacuzzi, but the sauna/steam & gym all looked good. Overall there was nothing really horrble or bad about it, I just didn't get the wow factor I expected from one of the dearest hotels in York.

The room was lovely and very well presented, however considering it was freezing outside we could not understand why our room was so hot. I made a complaint and they bought a fan up to our room. However when we came back from dinner the room was still unbearably hot. I asked for a sheet to put on our bed because we couldn't sleep with the thick cover on. They provided the sheet but the next morning when i complained about the heat of the room the just said "sorry that sometimes happens". To be honest i was expecting some compensation or at least a kind gesture. It was such a shame and ruined a very important occasion for my boyfriend and I. They should of offered us a room change but did not. I was very disappointed. Such a shame for a beautiful hotel.

Nice mix of modern and old. Lovely character building. Directly next to the station so was very handy to get to.

Quite expensive to eat meals there. Room was ok...a room. Noisy after 11 pm in hallway

We arrived early and asked if we could check in early and were advised yes there was a room available. Upon entering the room, which was on the far side nr the conference centre and quite a trek involving 2 lifts, everything looked fine ... however within a few seconds we noticed a musty damp smell and I also spotted rat droppings on the floor. I immediately phoned reception and was told they would ring me back , 15 mins passed and no call back, I rang again and this time spoke to the duty manager who was unaware of our issue but said she'd send someone immediately. They moved us without hesitation to a room on the top floor although in the same block. The room was bigger, more comfortable and didnt smell! This was our second visit and the first time was much better we even had a bottle of wine waiting for us in our room but not this time. The hotel is genrally ok but could do with a lick of paint in places. Whatever you do make sure you stay in the main building is my only tip!

The outside is beautiful and staff helpful, but the inside feels a bit tired and could use some redo - i.e. some peeling paint in corners and fading elsewhere. The mattress needs to be the first to go, could feel the springs. It is right next to the train station but never heard a thing, and location is good it is a short walk to the minster, etc - there ARE some hotels in town and B&Bs but the walk was a nice one so no issue

Everything about this lovely hotel lived up to its 4-star rating, apart from the bed, which had a disappointingly soft mattress, leading my wife and I to wake up with aching backs... Having said that, I would still recommend the hotel for its excellent position (only 5 minutes' walk from the Minster) and overall level of comfort and efficiency. We were also impressed with the quality of the 'bar food' on offer, particularly the evening tapas and alternative breakfast offerings (bacon sandwiches or fresh fruit salad with yogurt for a third of the price of a full breakfast).

The Royal York was a beautiful old hotel. Our room was nice but the bathroom was not adequately furnished to hold any traveling toiletries. A small shelving unit near the sink would have helped. Also the spotlights on the hotel brightened our room like daylight, having to leave the window open and not being able to close the curtains because there was no air conditioning was an inconvenience.
