Nice hotel, convenient location a littel overpriced. We checked about 1 am in the morning, our first impression was, very cooperative Front desk service, even after midnight. Since we checked in verry late, we had to sleep longer on our first day, the cleaning team didn't show up after 12:30 pm that day. the second day and third day they just cleaned […] the bathroom and didn't even changed the bedsheat. After all we decided to stay five more days in the hotel, but they gave us higher price and we had to move to different rooms, which mad us to leave the hotel and found a better hotel for about the same price. Bathroom needs a fan. TV remote was not user friendly. Location of this hotel is very convenient.

The complimentary breakfast is good. The location is not bad - close to UC Berkeley and a bunch of resturants around. The hotel is a little bit overpriced.

Great experience. The cleanest hotel I have been in some time. The staff was great. Light and airy. Breakfast had something for everyone. Good value for your $.

I have stayed in a number of hotels throughout the city of Berkeley and found this Holiday Express to be much too expensive for what it is. Security and breakfast are second to none, but a double occupancy room is much too expensive compared to other neighborhood hotels.

The beds and pillows were very comfortable. Free breakfast too.

Good location in Berkeley, convenient to I80. Friendly staff. Nice breakfast buffet, with cereal, bananas, yogurt, bagels, croissants. Some of the hot food, like the bacon, sausage and egg thing were not so good, but I was surprised they even offered them. I did not try the pancakes but they are probably OK. I took 8 college students to a competition at UC Berkeley, and we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. I don't know Berkeley well, so I picked the hotel based mostly on price and location. I ended up being very pleased. It was very clean and in great shape (I have no idea when it was built, but it looks brand new). As we were driving down University Avenue, […] I saw several other comparable hotels that looked pretty run down, so I was pleased when we got to the Holiday Inn. When I travel with students, free parking, free breakfast, and free wifi are all absolutely necessary (otherwise the whining is unbearable). There is ample parking and a surprisingly good free breakfast. (The food is mass produced / industrial, but it's ample, it's free, and there's a wide variety of items--not just Danishes and OJ.) One minor complaint: I thought the wifi was quite slow; I was streaming a movie from Netflix, and it paused several times for a couple of minutes. (Maybe that was Netflix, but I haven't had that problem elsewhere.) If you're hardy, you could walk to UC Berkeley from the hotel (and save yourself a bunch of money paying to park near the university). Otherwise, it's a 5-minute drive. There are also a few decent (not outstanding) restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. All in all, if my students go to this competition again next year, I'd probably stay at the Holiday Inn again. Les mer

This hotel was perfect for our weekend stay. Great restaurants all around, walking distance to our destination. If you are looking for a comfortable overnight in Berkeley, this is a great choice.

I was under the impression that this hotel was providing suites. It was a small room with 2 double beds that were supposed to be queens with an extra sink. If you need space, don't choose this location.

It was a very nice room for the cost. Clean, courteous help and a great breakfast for a modest hotel.

We have stayed at this HI Express several times going back to when both of our kids were attending Cal. The staff has always been friendly and attentive. It is conveniently located to the AC Transit lines that run along San Pablo Avenue and also up University Avenue to the campus and around to College Avenue shopping and dining. On our most recent visit, […] we stayed in a "king mini-suite" - the room was generally clean with the exception of one spot on the carpet (gum or something) and missing grout in some of the floor tiles in the bathroom. Those were pretty much the limit of the room's shortcomings. Although the character of the surrounding neighborhood is not unusual for Berkeley, it is generally quiet with the exception of traffic on University Avenue, which settles down considerably at night. Good value for the money and very convenient to the Cal campus. Les mer

We had a room glitch, meaning a hotel staff member promised us a room the third night, and there were none, but it all worked out fine as a room opened up. I have stayed here many times and though it is on the pricey side, it has a nice breakfast offering and the staff is very nice, including the manager. I have always had a good stay here, and the […] beds and sheets are wonderful. Les mer

I picked this hotel chain because of its guaranteed quality and the breakfasts. It was a surprise to see they've added eggs (omelets) to the line up. The room was comfortable, but a little smaller than most. This is more typical of hotels in downtown areas like this one. From here you have good access to the Freeway, Marina or University.

I travel to the Bay area and Berkeley in particular fairly often and have paid much more to stay in worse places. The hotel seems to be newly refurbished. It's not posh, but it is comfortable. It's not in the best part of town, but it's not in the worst part, either-- as a grad student I lived only a few blocks away. There are numerous decent restaurants […] in walking distance, and it's a straight shot up University to get to (surprise) the University. The breakfast is quite decent with several options to accommodate various needs. There is a bit of an issue with the entrance/exit -- both may necessitate a trip around the block depending on where you're coming from and where you're going-- but that applies to a lot of places in Berkeley. Good clean place to stay. The neighborhood is a little concerning but the hotel stay was great. Love their clean fluffy linens!

The room smelled bad....musty.....and the hallway smelled like smoke......Never ever again.....will rather pay twice as much than smell the stench all night.

FYI: The Holiday Inn Express in Berkeley has an elevator with an expired inspection notice posted. It sure would be nice if the management would post an up-to-date inspection notice in the elevator. Otherwise, the city of Berkeley really needs to come and inspect it!

This is a nice place. The room was clean. The bed was very comfortable. The matress was nice and firm. The room has a new HDTV. Approx 32" screen. The breakfast buffet had a bit of everything and the buffet attendant kept everything well stocked. The only drawback was the dreadful traffic on University Ave. We were there on a Saturday afternoon but […] it was no better when we left the area around 2PM on Sunday. We did did make a delightful find for dinner. The Brazil Cafe about a mile up on University Ave toward the Cal campus. It's on the left hand side of the street at the corner of University and Walnut. It's a colorful little shack with outdoor dining. The food is great. When we were there a band was playing on the sidewalk in front of the place. The owner was out there dancing to the music and making suggestions on what menu selctions to try. He even gave us a sample of the meat and his special sauce. Yummy! Les mer

The hotel was under construction (no notice of that on the website). My room was a newly renovated room. But wasn't in the best condition. The door lock stuck intermittently & I had to use my whole body to open it. The alarm clock was dysfunctional. The TV's built in DVD player was removed.

For those of you who need someplace for a short stay very close to the Berkeley campus this is a great deal...on the basic level. But don't expect any frills (hence the "basic"). The owner is a very grumpy man and it gets worse the higher the occupancy rate and the closer it is to check in. Not exactly what you need to encounter after a long flight. […] Tip: Wait for him to step out and then charm ANYONE else at the counter. They subconsciously feel the need to make up for his attitude. Oh yeah, they're doing some serious and noisy renovations. If you need that after flight power nap, save it till night fall when the crews leave and stop working on the roof and blocking the actual entrance to the place. Yet, as I said before, if you are a pretty laid back person, the hotel is great! Les mer

I really had no complaints about this hotel. We did not have breakfast either day that we were there. The only thing that really bothered me was that the desk clerk would not give me a receipt of payment. He insisted that because we didn't go through him for reservations, the internet company should provide us with the receipt. That really bothered […] me. Les mer

Located on the edge of town, not walkable to any events. It was easy to get to and the breakfast in the morning is convenient, but not especially healthy.

if you've got to be close to UC Berkeley for something this is a great value. Otherwise, you might as well hit up Emeryville for something close to SF, Oakland, etc.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone. The beds were so comfortable and there were 4 pillows on EACH bed. I have never been to a hotel that gave you more than 2 and then you had to beg! The breakfast was excellent considering it's free! The place was quiet, the hotel was clean, the elevators arrived promptly. There is nothing negative I can think  […] of. Les mer
