The overnight staff was very unprepared and highly unprofessional. There were fingernails on our floor, no soap, no shampoo, and list goes on and on. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

The hotel itself was fine. I chose this over the Hampton Inn because we could get a room for $16 less this particular weekend. However, the breakfast (most important part of the stay) was a little disappointing. The selection was very reasonable, with a wide variety of stuff. However, the eggs were atrocious -- scrambled on Saturday, obviously powdered; […] cheese omelettes on Sunday, clearly from an assembly line, worse. The sausage gravy was good and the biscuit on Saturday was all right; the biscuit on Sunday was clearly from Saturday, half of it was hard to cut with a knife. The so-called bacon they had on Sunday looked and tasted strange -- my wife described it as "bacon-flavored deep-fried construction paper." On the positive side, the warm cinnamon rolls were a treat. They had a machine to make pancakes, but we did not try them. Based on my experience here (Ames is not a regular stop for us) and my past experience with Hampton Inns in general, I'll definitely choose Hampton. Les mer

The staff were very helpful and welcoming, the room was very comfortable (I particularly liked the pillows that were marked "soft" and "firm"), and the breakfast was excellent. Can't go wrong with a Holiday Inn Express!

My peer and I had a great time at the hotel. It was convenient, clean, and comfortable. I would definitely stay there again.

I booked a non smoking room and the reserved a smoking room. Yuk! Way over priced! I stayed in nicer places for alot less money.

The hotel was very close to Iowa State University (approximately a five minute drive). If you have a student at the university I would highly recommend the hotel for visiting on Family Weekend or for football and /or basketball games.

Everything was as expected. I do object to the prices being "jacked up" because it was a football weekend. We were there to visit family, not as Iowa State alums and this "gouging" is unfair. The cost of the room should be uniform. Nancy

Great location and facility. My only concern is that the guy at the desk asked for my drivers license and wanted to photo copy it. I've never had a hotel ask for this. The guy said it was company policy. I got the photo copy back when I checked out and made a decision to patronize a different hotel in the future.

The room was clean. It was spacious and comfortable. The breakfast could have been better. Cold continental was good. Pancake maker wasn't working It was fair week and ISU move in, the price seemed high for the hotel.

Hotel was clean and maintained, for the price it was really a good hotel. Great location just off the inerstate gas station and fast food places near if you need them. Buffet for breakfast was really good and had togo bags available also. Overall really nice hotel

Although breakfast was included, the quality of the selections left much to be desired. The powdered eggs and dry biscuits are not recommended by any stretch. Fresh fruit was limited to apples and bananas. If one is not overly picky and breakfast is not that important, then what the hotel has to offer will do in a pinch. All other aspects of the hotel were quite satisfactory - clean, comfortable, quiet and attended by a helpful and professional staff. This place was very user friendly...even tho there were alot of hockey kids there...you hardly noticed any unwanted noise or inconvience... would stay there again...very nice staff and the breakfast was great...thanks

There were ants in the pool and the bedroom was ok. Not the best. Not the cleanest. I have stayed in many hotels in Ames and I will not return to this one. When I told the desk attendant about the ants in the pool he scolded me for bringing in food and drink. Most places let you bring in food and drink not in glass. This Holiday Inn is very reasonable for prices. We stayed there on our way up north. The breakfast in the morning is pretty good with hot food, cold food, and pretty good coffee. The room next to us had a loud vibrating sound coming from it (fridge, exhaust fan?) and we called to see if it could be stopped but it never was. That was the only problem […] we had. Convenient to the interstate. Room was clean with large mini fridge and microwave. Easy check in and out. Clean pool area and all the basics for breakfast. Nothing fancy but good choice for overnight stay.

we found dried pizza in a chair and on the floor when we settled in...... the manager did come down and vacuum the room after i took the pizza to him

I initially booked a 2 star hotel in Des Moines and stayed one night. It was gross. The next day I got on expedia.com and chose the option to book a 3 star hotel knowing the rate, but not knowing the name of the hotel until after I paid. The room was only $8 more than the 2 star hotel, and when I found out it was the Holiday Inn Express, I was ecstatic. […] The hotel was very clean and very nice. The "hot" buffet should be renamed "microwavable" however there was a nice selection of continental breakfast foods as well as yogurt. The workout facilities need much to be desired and the hotel heater was very noisy. The pool needed to be better heated.

My room was nice enough, though I had a hard time controlling the temperature – a slight turn of the knob turned no heat to blasting waves of heat. The breakfast was good, and for the price I'd say it was a good hotel for a quick 12 hours.

The hotel needs some work. The wallpaper is drab and "used" looking. The tile on the bathroom floor was rubbed black (color worn off) in several spots. The tub sealant also needs to be redone. The carpets need cleaning and beware of the flying/crawling incests that sneek into the room via the air conditioner unit that "staff unfortunately can't control" […] hotel staff's exact words. I'd rather stay at another brand OR stay in Des Moines and drive to Ames. Les mer

Friendly front desk person & quick check-in. But the room was not at the level of other chains that are similarly priced. Fixtures & finishes looked closer to Hotel 6. Our room had a unopened yogurt cup on the dresser & a soiled washcloth hanging over the shower rod. Looked like they didn't clean it well or someone checked in to the room & then moved […] to a different room. Les mer
