Aston at Papakea Resort - Maui

We got upgraded from a studio to a one bedroom, which was nice. The room was clean. Only thing is the air conditioner was in the living room and the bedroom was on the other end. We had to blast the air conditioner to cool the bedroom. We loved the Papakea! My wife and I were looking for a good compromise between cost, location, and amenities, and we certainly found it! The Papakea is located on a quiet, cozy recessed drive away from the main highway. Most of the occupants were families with kids or older couples. The cost of the room included free wi-fi and free parking, which was […] great since most other hotels/resorts in the area charged separate fees for each of those amenities. Our room was clean and comfortable, and was only serviced when we requested it. The kitchen is GREAT because we didn't want to have to eat out for every meal (especially breakfast), and it was fuly stocked with tableware, silverware, pots, pans, utensils, etc. The room also included a few used books, games, and puzzles, which were nice ways to wind down the evenings. The Papakea doesn't open up to a beach of its own, but the neighboring hotels did, and it wasn't a very far walk to get to the open sand and ocean. It's a short drive from the Papakea to other destinations, such as Lahaina. The Papakea is also within walking distance of grocery stores, restaurants, a post office, and rental shops (for snorkeling gear, boards, etc). GLUTEN-FREE: My wife must eat a gluten-free diet, and the Papakea is a short walk from a great natural foods store (the Farmers Market), and is right across the street from an italian restaurant (Pizza Paradiso) that has excellent GF pizza crust and other GF menu options. We spent four nights at Aston Papakea Resort for our honeymoon. The hotel and room give you a relaxing feeling. Very beautiful beach view and hotel garden view, they also offer small amentities like golf, swimming pool, and jucuzzi. Full kitchen supplies, might be great for family gateway where you can cook. Very nice condo. The only problem was some maintenance issues, like the showers gave us problems with the amount of hot water available, and one shower had a broken handle.

We would book again- simply put. For the high season on Maui, rates were reasonable. The place is a little older and therefore a few things were pretty 80s like the wallpapered rooms and slightly worn cabinets but that is the only even slightly negative and it is hardly worth the mention. The place was spacious, well equipped, nicely furnished, very […] clean (matters much more to me than retro wallpaper) and very comfortable. For a 1 bedroom, full living and dining area and full kitchen, you won't find a better deal on Maui in February. I took a chance via a hotels web site and was very pleased. We liked our unit - but next time, will ask for a sunny location. (Missed the sun, we did.)My biggest complaint is a small one: the paper person thought it was his/her job ti wake us up at 5:30 am. Am told there are less expensive ways to book this unit - will explore this and if savings are substantial, be vocal online.

Our bed was old and so uncomfortable we hardly got any sleep. And you couldn't move in it it made so much noise it sounded like it was falling apart. We didn't find the complex as clean as it could be even after the room and foyer was freshly clean there was a lot of places that were missed. Not much attention to detail.

I have stayed in other Aston resorts, but this was my first stay at the Papakea. I would stay again. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We had an ocean view room which was awesome! The location of the hotel is convenient, within minutes of Lahaina. You have to pay an amenity fee regardless of whether you use the extra amenities such as the safe, […] dvds, games etc, so in my opinion, that's a drawback. However, you do not have to pay daily parking which is an advantage. The last comment I would make is we made the effort to collect trash off of Ka'anapali Beach through a volunteer program. We got back after dark, so we left that bag of trash on our lanai overnight because we were to count the pieces and type of trash. We were "greeted" the next morning by an Aston Papakea Security person who was quite unfriendly who simply said "you have a blue bag on your lanai. You need to remove it immediately. You cannot have anything stored on your lanai." I apologized and did remove it. When I check the rules they hand you when you check in, this rule is buried under the title "No signal flags". I felt his reaction was a little unjustified and very unfriendly. I think he could have been a little more diplomatic about it. I had spent part of my vacation time volunteering for a good cause only to be "scolded" for leaving a bag on the lanai. I thought that was very poor customer relations. Les mer

The Aston Papakea is a nice, if a bit aging, property. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room (individually owned condo) needed a bit of repair, but nothing that detracted from a great stay. I would say the biggest surprise was that a property this large does not have a restaurant or bar, although you can walk next door to a sister property. […] It is close (walkable) to the market and a nice park. Our condo was great. The kitchen had everything so we saved on food. The entire atmosphere of the place is very relaxing. The pool and spa areas are next to the oceanfront and are great for hanging out.

We have stayed at Papakea resort three times in the past few years and have had a wonderful time each trip. The rooms are clean, the service is excellent, the grounds are well kept and beautiful. The pools are clean and the staff is always friendly. I would recommend this resort to anyone. We traveled to Maui as a family of six, and spent 8 wonderful nights at the Aston at Papakea Resort. We were absolutely thrilled with our accommodations. We had a 2bd ocean front unit with an updated and fully equipped kitchen. Breath taking view of Moloki and Lanai our room. The location is great as well. The Papakea is ideally located. There is a convenience store next door, a grocery store walking distance from the facility, the grounds are well maintained, and staff is always accommodating. I have stayed @ the Papakea several times and keep coming back.

The hotel facility is nice overall, other than no beach access. They teach me what the difference between beach view vs. beach access. The front desk is not helpful at tall. Internet in the room is not working and the front desk even do not let me use phone to make a local call for the internet issue. Also, be aware there is front desk people available […] from 2am - 6am. I am amazed the hotel can be in business wiht this kind of service in a tourist town. Very well maintained hotel. The view is absolutely stunning from this hotel. I was here for only 3 days (for a conference) and without a car. Not having a car is a problem, as I was limited to the local grocery(5 mins walk) and Subway (10 mins walk) for my food supplies. Overall a great place to relax and chill.

I love this property, my fourth time here! Great location, landscaping is awesome, staff and our housekeeper "Judy" was through and friendly. Having a full kitchen was great and saved us some cash as well. Only drawback is the beach, it's filled with rocks for miles up and down the beach. We had to drive in order to get to a nice sandy beach. There […] was a pool and spa available to us which was always clean and well maintained. The air conditioning unit was very loud and the ceiling fans help cool the rooms but there wasn't much circulation of the cool air. We had to keep bedroom doors open and balcony door open as well. We had to turn up the TV extra loud when the air came on and down when the air went off. One disappointment was that our ocean view room was blocked by a big tree. I asked for luggage stand. They told me only owners can have it. Luggage stand is very common which most 2 stars and up resorts should have it for each room as standard. The resort should change all the TV stands. It blocks the left and right sides.

We booked an oceanfront studio. We walk into out dated decor. The room had a murphy bed with sheets that weren't changed our entire three days. The checkin staff was not friendly. The shampoos and products were not restocked. The condo had a cooler which we took to drive up the Road to Hana. We wanted to dry it out for the next guest so we put it on […] the porch to dry and security yelled at us but not all the smokers. You have to sign a waiver saying you will not smoke on the property and there were smokers everywhere. Even on the beach, which by the way, is nonexistant. They have the entrances blocked. You have to walk to neighboring hotels to get in and there is only about 6 feet of sand. Les mer

Hotel was excellent value. Great vacation experience BUT Dollar CAR RENTAL WAS A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. IT WAS THE WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE I COULD HAVE EVER IMAGINED. I tried out 4 pieces of Junk so I could get out of Maui airport. Then had to change again at the resort. Overall very pleasant stay. The hotel is slightly out of date on the exterior but nevertheless well maintained. The room was large and clean and as described - AC, fan in both rooms, fully equipped kitchen. I got an amazing room upgrade which was so nice. I was right on the ocean. The property is nice, clean, well maintained. I wanted to check in 1.5 hours early as I had all kinds of meltables in the car and was greeted by a somewhat snarky front desk person. To be fair she was much more pleasant upon check out. I also requested an hour late check out […] and was denied this. I don't get the impression they are very flexible. They were doing cable updates on the building I was in and I was hoping for some privacy and to not deal with a two day open schedule for the workers to stop by. There was also no flexibility with this. Dealing with cable workers sounds like stress I have to deal with at home not on vacation. In fact I don't deal with this at home, who can sit around and wait all day? They didn't inform me of this until after I checked in. Anyway other than that a great stay. We loved it, and plan to come back. Having free DVD and PlayStation 2 game rentals meant my husband was never bored. The pool and hot tub are clean, and the location is right next to the beach. Nothing beats soaking in a hot tub while listening to the sound of waves crashing behind you. Location wise, it is perfectly situated within walking distance […] of a supermarket, coffee shop, a fruit stand and a few small restaurants. It's right next to the main highway and getting anywhere was a breeze. Plus, it's within 10-15 minute driving distance of some fabulous restaurants. There are five or six grills next to the pool, meaning you can do a little cooking and grilling if you'd like. Best of all, there was free parking. FREE parking for your car (2nd car is charged $5.00/day which is still less than other hotels). Getting towels changed was a challenge, but having a washer/dryer in the unit was helpful. Les mer

When we checked in the next lady over from us was complaining about how her room was in disrepair and unacceptable. The service representative informed the lady that each unit is privately owned, and that there was nothing they could do about it. Keep that in mind when booking at this location. That being said, our room was great. It overlooked the […] ocean, was very clean and quite comfortable. My only gripe is that we had booked a room with a queen bed and instead got a murphy bed. I've stayed at Papakea 4 times and each time has been great. The only negative thing was this time they charged us a $10 per day "resort fee" which bought us nothing, just another way to gouge the tourists.

Papakea feels like home. You have all the conveniences like home including BBQ's, the beautiful grounds (maintained fantasically) and the pools. This is about our 10th stay at Papakea and will always return, just perfect!
