Grand Lucayan - Freeport

Upon arrival to the Hotel at 9am I was told that my room was not ready and handed a beeper (like TGIF) and told to come back when it went off. This hotel "knew" what time our ship was to port and ALL 115 passengers were told to wait for our room. It was after 5pm before I was given a room and (only because I settled for a smaller room than I booked) […] and the entire 1st day was gone. The day that I was to check out I was awakened at 8:36am by housekeeping who removed my "Do Not Disturb" sign and told that they needed to clean the room and when was I going to be leaving. I am SO disappointed. My three day two nights turned into two night and one day. So much money for what!! Les mer

This was my first time to Freeport, Grand Bahama. My cousin got married at The Grand Lucayan so that is why I choose to stay there. Awesome hotel!!! I am a Bahamian and I truly enjoyed myself. I will be bringing my family back for sure for a vacation instead of traveling states side. The staff were amazing they make you feel totally welcome (even when […] they knew I was Bahamian). The food at the reception was to die for a real Bahamian spread, can think of anything on the menu (and there was a lot on it) that I can complain about. The bed OMG super comfy!!!! Wish I could go back tomorrow. If you are looking to just relax on the beach or by the pool ( there were a number of pools) with a swim up to bar at the Hammerheads bar (awesome). This is not normally an issue for most, however, for 5 divers it was a huge costly problem. Hotel policy does not allow 5 to a room. On top of that, they were unhelpful and rude when we were trying to work out the issue. It's a beautiful hotel, but probably not worth the money

This is the only hotel I stay at in the Freeport and I travel there about 4 times a year. The staff are great. The hotel is amazing. It is a great place to stay.

Great resort with lots to offer. Nice rooms, restaurants, pools and beach access. The hotel offers plenty of fun things on the extended property. This is a place to go if you want to just stay and relax, The island, however, is very industrial. If going to Grand Bahama, definitely stay on a resort property.

I had an enjoyable stay at the Grand Lucayan recently. The staff were most helpful especially at the front desk. I particularly appreciated the prescience of a Starbucks right there on site! The room was clean and well kept and the balcony was welcome....especially on my day off when the morning sun's rays helped me to relax! Everything inside the hotel was very clean. The pools, grounds and surroundings were also well maintained. Had a great stay with very comfortable beds as well. They have everything on the main grounds including coffee shop and a few restaurants - with a casino and the market right across the street we had many things to do along with relaxing.

Overall, the hotel is a nice place to getaway and relax. The property is HUGE with multiple restautants and mutiple pool areas. It is a great place to lay out by the pool or beach and you dont feel crowded by people. The property has big potential, but they are not utlizing it.

I actually stayed for 6 days here at the Grand Lucayan. The cleaning service was superb and they even allowed me to remain in room as they cleaned, and did a great job. The weather was a bit cool and whirlpool water was freezing as well, but other than that it was a great stay.

The hotel was great as was the staff. Food very, very expensive and poor quality. If you like a lot of fried food, limited vegetable selection and poor quality vegetables then this is the place for you. The hotel was well-located and well-maintained. Small suggestions would be--keep the hallways warmer (many guests were discussing this and it makes no sense ecologically or for client's comfort), have trash cans on the beach, and have later hours for spa treatments so guests can enjoy the daytime activities and have spa treatmets later.....

The beach is amazing. The hotel itself, however, is another story. It is quite run down, the staff are not the most helpful, and we dealt with an ant infestation in our room. As for the restaurants at the resort - most are not open (even if the schedule says they are), and the food was really disappointing and overpriced for what it is. We liked Freeport; […] however, we will not be staying at Grand Lucaya for our next visit... which is a bummer, as it is clear that it used to be a grand hotel, but that is definitely not the case now. Friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were nicer than expected . Spacious clean and comfy beds. Beautiful beach and great location across from the Marketplace . We did not eat at any of the hotel restaurants as there were many choices and great deals at the marketplace .

Hotel was much nicer than we thought. Hotel staff was very pleasant and helpful. Overall the hotel was gorgeous, especially the lobby which was a very nice place to sit and relax. Churchills was absolutely wonderful, with prices about the same as restaurants in the marketplace across the street witch were no where near as nice. The Grand Lucayan was very good! Pros: The beach was gorgeous! Great for long walks. The ocean swimming was fabulous! The hotel staff were wonderful, friendly and attentive. I don't have children myself, but all the kids there appeared to be having a great time, just make sure they can swim and you watch them while at the pool & beach. Oh, there is […] a pretty good gym as well. I didn't use the spa but it looked nice! Cons: Rooms in the main building facing the marina were noisier due to all the ventilation fans and air conditioning units for the other buildings. We could not sit with the sliding door open or sleep with it open due to the noise. This was not a problem for us since we were outside on the beach anyways; if you were a light sleeper, then I would recommend an ocean facing room. My only other complaint was the air conditioning in the common rooms and hallways. It was set too low. 22 Celsius / 71 Fahrenheit would have been adequate. You would need a fleece or long sleeve shirt on to be comfortable if you are there for a long period of time. Other than that, it was great! I would recommend this place!! Les mer

The location of the hotel and view from the balcony were worth the price of this hotel. The bedroom and suite was very roomy for several people to stay. Double wide balcony was a wonderful location to have breakfast. Location across from the Port Lucaya Marketplace was wonderful for shopping, dining and arranging for tours. Location is great. Beautiful beach and a short walk off down the beach is very quiet, just some condos and private homes on the beachfront. No need to eat at the hotel, Port Lucaya across the street has plenty of great ones at reasonable prices. View from the ocean front rooms is fantastic. We visited for 2 nights to relax away from work. The hotel surroundings were nice, however at the time the hotel was very quiet. I could imagine in a busier time the hotel would not be as relaxing. The staff in the most part were helpful however working in the Travel industry there was inconsistency in service across the board. The food during the day […] time did however not impress, although Churchills restaurant was fantastic. Grand Lucayan is a grand old resort. The grounds and landscaping is fantastic. The beach access and pools are great. When we were there some of the restaurants and 2 parts of the resort were closed. I hope this is just off season and not because tourism in Grand Bahama has dropped so much.

The hotel was clean, nice, had OK sized rooms. Bit annoying having to walk pretty far for the only elevators in the building (think it was 4 elevators for 500 rooms / 10 floors). There weren't too many activites available. There's a marketplace close to the hotel, but it takes a day to check it out and then that's that. In the area, there are jeep […] tours, one can dive and do snorkeling, there are dolphins, tennis courts, horses, etc. Still, if the weather is bad, one with feel there's not much stuff to do. When the weather is great, it's a super area. Nice pool, OK dining options (the hotel has 8-10 different restaurants that are open/closed several days a week). If one is looking for a relaxing week by the pool, just reading, tanning and taking an occassional swim, then the Grand Lucaya is a good choice. However, there are limited stuff to do on Grand Bahamas, so if the weather is bad, one might feel a bit stuck. It's not really possible to use public transport so one has to take cabs everywhere - but there's not that much to see. A national park and some beaches. We were happy with our visit (about 7 days) but we would probably go someplace else the next time we go to the Caribbean. Les mer

This resort is perfect for couples, and families. There are plenty of activities available for kids, and the restaurants offer a wide range of choices. There are water sports available on the grounds of the hotel, as well as across street. The market place across from the hotel has tons of shops that offer everything from milk, groceries and souvenirs, […] to expensive jewelry, liquor and clothing. Except for noisy next room neighbors twice , our floor on the 10th was nice and quiet. Can't say too much about the food other than Churchill's is over-rated and the food was OK. Room service turned out to be the best for us morning and evening, otherwise we ate at different restaurants at the marketplace.

My wife and I had a very pleasant experience during our stay. The staff was very nice. Our room was clean, and we appreciate that very much. We were very glad that we booked an ocean view room. The hotel was amazing right on the beech. The ocean view rooms are worth the extra money. The view was breathtaking. Right across the street was the local market and many restaurants. It felt safe and the people in Freeport were very friendly. I highly recommend it!

This is my second stay at this hotel, overall its a nice resort and I plan to go back again. I would like to see the pools being a bit warmer and cash being accepted at the pool bar. The staff is really friendly as I remember. Zorbas is the place to go for breakfast in the Port Lucaya Marketplace, skip the overprice hotel breakfast buffet.

Hotel very dated, staff not rude just not friendly. Pool had broken tile by steps, water appeared dirty with oil floating on surface. One day you get water in your room, next day none. Check-In is a joke, staff seemed confused, hotel was almost completely empty still we waited for a room it was past check-in time, so what was the problem.

Well, when I booked the hotel, it was a Radisson, when I arrived it was not clear what the name was, however, there was still Radisson signage here and there.

This was a wonderful resort! The rooms were very spacious. We had a terrific ocean view! There were always plenty of lounge chairs at the pool and the swim up bar was fun! Loved the negative edge pools. Everyone seemed to hang out near those. The buffet breakfast was very hot and tasty with lots of good choices of food. Loved that there was a Starbucks […] on-site as I love my morning Starbucks! The little store on site carried most all of the last minute necessities we needed like sunscreen that we forgot. Most of all loved all the choices of fun things to do. We went on a Banana boat tour, rented jet skiis and went snorkeling. Everything was very fun and reasonable. The Wednesday night buffet pool side was definitely worth it! The food was delicious...including Red snapper, grilled Jerk chicken, BBQ ribs and all the trimmings. And as an added bonus the entertainment was a Junkanoo band in full costumes! What fun! The water was crystal clear and the white sand was so soft it was like velvet and was nicely groomed every morning. The resort staff was very friendly and each time any staff member passed us they greeted us. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to return!!! Les mer

On our arrival a late afternoon the front desk greeting experience was as expected, all was fine until we reached our room, the bathroom was well below standards showing signs of a quick cleanup with running traces of old soap and mildew. The next morning we requested a cleanup while we left the room for the beach. On our return the smell of bleach […] was so strong we had to vent the room and bathroom for some time before we could use it. Apart from that the room was comfortable though the A/C was as loud as an old vacuum cleaner every time is started. Our other experience was at their Churchill restaurant they are probably trying to do their best but have so many managers that the service is very slow. After our starters the table was completely cleaned up, then, we waited 15' for our main course, finally after it arrived, no cutlery to eat it, we expected our server to noticed it, but no she disappeared before I could say anything, We had to wait another 5 minutes until I waived a nearby manager who was around inquiring from table to table if everything was ok. When he finally got to our table, he ordered to bring the missing cutlery which took some more patience due to the long chain of command. On another occasion, when I wanted to order a beer at the pool bar at 6:01 p.m. I was denied by the bartender “Bar is closed he said to me, and when I asked him at what time, he replied 6:00 p.m. you'r to late!!! So no beer to end my sunbathing and no where else to get one. Les mer

Pro's: The property is big & beautiful. The landscape is like a postcard. Amenities are numerous & well kept. The beach is blue, calm, powdery & expansive. Amazing staff always with kind words and smiles. Wonderful port market across the street full of shopping, bars and diverse restaurants. Zorba's has amazing breakfast & fried grouper or gyros. Five […] star restaurant flying fish next door. Casino is well equipped & serves free drinks for both tables & slots. Churchill's is beautiful, classy and a fair 4 star value. China Beach is very attractive, but a Bahamian version of Chinese food. The Cons: Freeport by airports other than Miami or Ft Lauderdale is limited. (U S Customs is at Freeport which is a real plus and time saver.) Only 50% operational and the low rise hotel building & pool has been mothballed due to the economy. Food at the pool bar is so so and over priced. Restaurants open on alternate days. Tips: If you go in high season, it will not feel crowded and more things will be in full swing. If you go in low season, you will get a great rate and have the place to yourself, nice and quiet. Purchase bottles across the street at the duty free and save a bundle. A very nice, safe, super clean and reasonably priced alternative the other islands with all the amenities. You will not be disappointed. Les mer

We had an ocean facing room. The views were excellent. The best part about the resort is the location and the amenities. It is right beside Port Lucayan and the marketplace. Everything is just a few minutes walk from the resort. Security around the resort was very good. The pools were gorgeous and were well maintained. The beach in front of the resort […] had access to several water sports. We were slightly disappointed with the Spa, but maybe that comes with the combined packages . Our bathroom was falling apart. The water faucet was hanging off the wall, so was the bath hand rail and the toilet paper holder. there was no plug in the bath tub it had rotted away and some of the grout had turned black. The plug in the bathroom sink did not work also. The cleaning lady was nice. the bedding was always clean.

We have been vacationing at this resort since it first opened. Sadly, it has suffered from the poor economy and much on the property is currently closed like both hotels on either side of the Radisson and several property restaurants. We had a beautiful ocean view which we highly recommend. Our bathroom needed a little work. Although it was clean, there […] was permanent mold in the grout and the paint was chipping off the cabinetry. The metal soap dish was rusting. Also, the family pool and the infinity pool both need their water quality monitored more closely. The family pool felt like bath water and looked a little green. Aside from all of this, the staff was wonderful and the beds were comfortable and clean. We love the people of Freeport and had a great time. They seem to be doing the best they can with what they have. You just can't beat the beauty or the people of the Bahamas! Les mer
