Hotel St. James - New York

This hotel was right in Time Square. What a perfect location. The staff was very friendly and the room was spacious and very clean. Will be coming back!!!

The Hotel St. James' best features are the location and the price. It's basically a no frills, basic hotel. The room was fine; small, but comfy and clean. Took a while for the water in the shower to get hot. I'd recommend bringing a bar of soap, as the ones provided were microscopic. The staff was friendly enough. No bar or restaurant in the hotel, […] but only 1,000,000 or so places to eat and drink in Midtown/Times Square, so that's no big deal. I'd go back because the price was right for an acceptable hotel in a great location. Les mer

We stayed here for a week visiting NYC. From the low price we had quite low expectations, but we were absolutely positively surprised. The hotel is nicely placed close to Times Square and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The deli next door serves good and varied food at a reasonable price. The room was ok, but did not have air condition (could […] possibly become a bit hot during summer) and did not have a fridge/minibar. However, you get what you pay for and if you are in NYC as a tourist, you should probably not do much else in the room other than sleeping. Despite being on Times Square, practically no noise from the streets was to be heard, so sleeping was no problem (our room faced to the back). We would recommend this hotel for anyone on a budget trip, perfect for students or young couples, more interested in seeing NYC rather than the inside of a hotel room. Les mer

You can't get a better hotel for this price in Times Square area. Excellent staff, partially renovated rooms (prefer the lower floors). One caution only: avoid during summer, there in no AC. Any temperatures above 80ºF should be endured at another hotel. When I return to NYC, St. James is my first choice!

We had to make a late check in, thus the person Who attended us at the reception was not very friendly, and had no one to help us with the bag. At least, on the other days, some attendants were more pleasant. The location is fantastic, extremely closed by Times Square, but the hotel itself has no attractions at all. I decided to spend the night in NYC and took this room at the last minute. The Hotel was older and the room was worn. The carpet was frayed at the edges and spotted. The bed was comfortable enough and the flat screen TV was the only modern convenience in the room. The room doors used keys and you had to retun the key to the front desk every time you […] left the hotel. The hotel was conveniently located but I don't think it was worth the money spent. Les mer

I stayed at the St. James primarily because another review said the hotel was clean. Considering that most of the time the room is used is sleep time, I was not interested in amenities such as pools, etc. The St. James is a basic hotel. this hotel is perfect for tourists who want to be close to all the action of Time's Square....so central to everything. We had a room towards the back of the hotel and it was very quiet despite all the partying on the streets. Very friendly staff.

If you want a nice sized room - this is not for you. Before booking, I read the reviews that stated room was small. And boy howdy is it. But if all you want is a place to lay your head at night and get up in the morning and go at it again, this will work. Opened the windows to cool the room as there is no AC. Best location for the$$$$$$$$$$. Updated bathroom. Clean. More old European style hall and elevator but certainly adequate. Cozy room. Walk to most theatres. Safe neighborhood.

Great location - 1 block from Times Square. Don't expect any amenities or a great room. Stay here though if you just need a place to sleep and aren't going to be in the hotel much. It's loud at night but that's too be expected with the location. Overall we were very pleased but also knew what to expect.

Nice people, older hotel, the room had no ventilation - awfully warm - hard to sleep, and then in AM - no hot water. Great location.

1 block from times sq., great location, Hotel is older, but if you only need a place to sleep this a great spot for the price.

If you are looking foe somewhere cheap to stay then it does the trick. Not much of anything in the hotel and the rooms are very small. The location is great but that's about all. They should really look into updating this hotel a bit. I will not stay there ever again.

The hotel room was clean and the bed was reasonable, but there was very noisy 24 hour building work going on on a site right by the hotel and the window did not do any kind of decent job at blocking the sound. If I had not had ear plugs then I wouldn't have had a minute of sleep. There was also a big pipe running floor to ceiling in the bathjroom that […] was almost always very hot and therefore the room was boiling hot and stuffy (as the window had to be kept shut) even when the outside temperature was cool to cold. A shame really, as with better glazing and without the pipe it would have been a pleasant enough hotel in a great location. Les mer

Very well located in the heart of NYC. A nice sized room. Comfortable and clean. No frills, but comfortable. The windows are not double pane, therefore the street noise was a bit bothersome from our second floor room. Ear plugs helped for the second night! Would stay here again.

The room was small, but had a nice bed and great flatscreen TV. The bathroom was nothing fancy, but very clean. The staff was nice. I would recommend this hotel for travelers that need a place near times square (at the end of the block from this hotel). It is in a great location and is the cheapest hotel around. Loved staying at Hotel St. James. Would definitely return and recommend to friends. Location is awesome! Affordable places to eat near by. Friendly staff. Very comfortable bed. Room was a bit warm, but we opened the window. Free wi-fi. Excellent value! Caution- if you order a shuttle from the desk in the lobby, you should be aware that it's not one […] of the "usual" shuttles...it's a large bus, and it cost more. However, the driver was pretty amazing and knew all the backroads routes to get around freeway traffic and get us to the airport on time. I was impressed. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by my experience here during a roughly 1-week stay. I was worried for a moment after finding some hair in the bedding when I first went into the room, but that turned out to be one of very few negatives (the others were the noise during several nights from a nearby construction site as well as a noisy radiator) of […] the stay and I assume you could do a lot worse in NYC at this price point. The staff were attentive and nice. The hotel felt safe. Excellent location. The bed was comfortable. The temperature of the water in the shower was somewhat unpredictable, but never colder than lukewarm. There are lockers downstairs to store personal items and a computer and printer to print boarding passes (logging on cost me $2). I would recommend this hotel to budget-minded travelers and would definitely stay here again under circumstances similar to this past trip. Les mer

If you want the bright lights and exciting tourist experience, this is the hotel for you. It's not bad if you want to see the other parts of the city as well, since train access is convenient. The location is excellent and the price is right. We were put in a tiny room with a furnace that wouldn't quit -- it was like a sauna! I called the front desk […] and they immediately showed us a different room that was much bigger and nicer and cooler. The room was comfortable and clean, reasonable size but the service terrible, the desk staff are most unfriendly. The only reason I would recommend it would be because of the location.

Some would say hotel was rundown, but it has its own charm. Shabby furniture but large rooms with no extra service. The location couldn't be better for the price. People looking for room service or other amenities would be disappointed.

I wanted to get the most out of my stay in NYC and the st James hotel was perfect to get in and around the city. Location was perfect as I was a block away from Time Square and amongst restaurants, so great a breakfast and late snack. Hotel service was great. Very supportive, attentive and helpful with all sort of queries. Hotel lobby and room was […] way out of date and needs a new coat of paint and new carpet. It would have been good to have tea and fridge in the room. The lift was rather slow and walls were slightly thin as I could hear my neighbor and their tv. A great location for the price that you pay, very close to the time square subway. The hotel room was a little run down but this is what you can expect for such a cheap price. The reception staff were very helpful and friendly, the only problem that we had was that the radiator was broken but when we mentioned this to the staff they fixed it straight […] away. Had maintenance going on which was no problem at all. It was an older hotel with a great location to Times Square. The price was right and was a great fit for what was looking for.

The location is great but the hotel is mediocre. I was in town to work/sight-see with my girlfriend. The rooms have no soundproofing so you can hear people in the room beside you, as well as a myriad of sounds of unknown origin that are likely the result of the building being pretty old. We stayed on the 7th floor and, and the cleaning staff tried […] to come in around 10-10:30 am every morning, though checkout isn't until 12. (They knocked, we answered that the room was occupied, they still came in, apologized, then left.) This happened to my girlfriend twice (she slept in while I took care of some work), and the pair of us once. They are undergoing renovations, which only seems to mean new furniture. By 9:30 or so on a Monday morning they were hammering away building the new pieces. It just so happened the furniture was being assembled on/for the 7th floor, and we were gathering our clothing to check out and head home later that day. It's not bad, and a great price for NYC but the hotel itself leaves a lot to be desired. On the plus side, it was right across the street from the office, and is around the corner from Times Square, which is nice if you like shiny shopping malls/tourist traps. It is pretty close to 5th ave for shopping as well as 42nd street station, which is extremely convenient for taking the subway anywhere throughout the city. Having been to NYC before, I know that there is a lot to see outside of midtown, but it is a great location for visitors who don't have specific sights. If you aren't set on staying in that area, you can probably find a nice hotel on the upper east/west side, near a subway station, that would be nicer. It really comes down to location vs. comfort. Noisy evenings aside, I pick location over comfort; to me it adds to the character of a trip. Les mer

The St. James is in the heart of NY's Theatre district. So many great sites are in walking distance! So if you want an affordable hotel in an awesome location this is your place but if you're one to stay in your room and not go anywhere this is not the hotel for you. Rooms were clean but small. If your in NYC for a few days and plan on being out of the hotel for most of the day - this is the place for you. It's basic and clean and super nice staff. I love the idea of leaving my key, made me feel very safe. I would recommend it to anyone - a gem in the middle of overpriced hotel. A clean bed, cable and a shower all for a great price

I was looking for a bed/place to stay in New York for a short stay. I found the prices were very reasonable. The hotel was in a great loaction so close to Time Square made it very convient. The Deli next door was great for breakfasts as nothing is available at the hotel. Only thing was the hydronic heating was a bit noisy at night. My dad actually chose this hotel out for me so I had no idea what to expect. It had a really nice feel and felt more so like an apartment block than hotel, but I kinda liked that. The staff were all pleasant & helpful and the cleaners/maintenance were lovely. The only complaint I would have would be that the bed was pretty hard, but I dealt with that. […] The tv was pretty small/old too but whatever. It was warm & comfortable otherwise and my room was quite large. I had no street noise or anything. The location is SUPERB. and the cafes next door were awesome if you didn't feel like eating out. Great hotel, if you not scared of a little city noise (which adds to the NY experience) then stay here. Front desk staff are great. It is not 5 star accom by any means but it is a simple place to stay, good secure location, great diner next door to the hotel which serves a hearty breakfast to get you going for the day. hotel is in the heart of times square minute walk to subway . rooms are decnt size and clean , just need some updates. staff friendly. if driving not the best place to stay as parking is very expensive

Close to most Subway lines, block away from the center of Times Square, Hi Def TV, quite, clean, internet. What more do you want.

Lovely little hotel in perfect location steps from Times Square. Rooms are tiny but comfortable and are a good value for NYC. WiFi was a little uncooperative, but everything else was so nice, I could live with it. Staff were friendly, helpful and always available. I would stay there again.
