I was never told about making reservations at the hotel buffet when i checked-in on saturday. So for dinner, we went to eat since everything nearby was closed anyway, but the restaurant hostess didnt let us in coz they are booked fully. Very efficient and helpful staff. My shower wasn't working so they expeditiously sent up a maintenance person to check it. Upon learning that the shower wasn't working they immediately gave me another room. Thanks Hilo Hawaiian Staff!! "U da bess!!"

We only stayed 2 nights but the view was great. It was great to get to the volcano and things on that side of the island. The hotel staff were great and they got us in our room early and gave us a great view.

We returned to the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, having had a wonderful stay ten years ago. Back then the hotel was grand - with quality well equiped rooms. The location is lovely - situated by the park and bay with a row of historic Banyan Tress along the front (one planted by Babe Ruth), the lobby is still grand and the staff are still warm and efficient, […] but the guest rooms need TLC - they were faded and shabby (but clean). What a shame - I appeal to the Castle Group to invest some money into refurbishing the guest rooms and restore this lovely hotel to it's former glory! Les mer

Everything was great about the hotel, but the trees outside of our windows were filled with really REALLY loud birds that kept us awake most of the night. Even though the hotel is great, I don't think I would stay here again unless I was on the water side of the hotel.

Very fun place to stay for 3 nights. Hotel staff very nice. Beautiful location. Just know it's older but clean & comfortable.

Enjoyed our stay. Food was good but a touch high for some items. Seafood was fresh and lots of it.. Make sure you pay the extra $10 for the harbour side, which comes with a fridge. No fridge in other rooms and no free Internet

All the comments and reviews about this hotel are accurate. It is a hotel that has shown its age, the hotel does not spend a lot of money to keep it looking top notch. However, it does look a lot better then all the other nearby locations. The rooms are fine and clean and people here are friendly. The room walls and ceiling are all paper thin. You […] can here everything around you - people using the bathroom upstairs, you can overhear peoples conversation in the halls and at about 5am we heard a jet take off from Hilo airport. We chose not to eat here because we didn't hear any good reviews about the restaurant and the prices were very steep. Les mer

I'm not too impressed with our stay at this hotel. We upgraded to a "superior" room and our view included the lobby rooftop which was covered in used tissues. The room itself had popcorn ceilings and wallpaper peeling off the wall. They also charge $10 a day to use their wifi. This hotel was definitely not worth the $150 per night we paid. On the plus […] side, the location is beautiful. The ocean is right out the window and a beautiful park with Japanese gardens and banyan trees is right there. First room we had was musty and smelled of cat urine. Clerk at desk quickly and nicely gave us a new room which faced the bay and smelled okay.

Most disappointing? Thin walls. With neighbors on each side, we either heard one's TV or the other's phone conversations...crisply...and neither were trying to be loud. It just seemed like the walls were hollow. I'm not sure sleep would have come so easily if I wasn't tired from a long day. Decor was stuck in the early 90s. Felt like nothing but the […] LCD TV had been changed in two decades. Another gripe - the water pressure in the shower was near nonexistent. For the price, this property did not meet expectations. The location of the hotel is very good, near the sea. But rooms close to the elevators are quite noisy.

Beautiful setting, w/large rooms, great ocean views, & conveniently located w/in walking distance to several restaurants. The landscaping is well-groomed but it’s clear the facility is aging, badly. The staff was courteous, professional & attentive. The in-room coffee was good, exactly as you would expect on Kona. The hotel has Wi-Fi in the lobby, but […] in the rooms you’re stuck with Ethernet cable for about $11 a day. Beyond that, it gets worse. My both bed sheets & towels felt cheap & threadbare, the pillows (I had only two on a king size bed) should have been retired long ago, interior painted surfaces are dingy, carpet is worn out & the cabinetry, furniture, plumbing & lighting fixtures are all extremely outdated & worn. In fact the overall decor reminds me of those kitschy Miami Vice-80's-era pastels & is desperately in need of renovation. That said, there really aren't any other good options in town so this property like the others sadly has no incentive to invest in improvements. Perhaps this is why their hotel room rates are so reasonable, compared to other cities in Hawaii? If you care more about a convenient location in a beautiful setting w/ nice staff & clean & affordable rooms than you do nice appointments & aesthetics, this is a good choice for you; it's not like you have a lot of choices in this town, so if you truly want a first-class facility & can spare a 3 Hour Drive to Kona (or an $80 flight,) that may be worth well the trouble. Wonderful location on the shore of Hilo Bay and convenient for visiting the volcanos. The view out of our hotel window of Coconut Island was incredible!

The room we stayed in smelled of old smoke, despite apparently being in a smoke free room. Our room didn't have what I think of as basic amenities, such as a fridge (I've been in 2-star hotels with fridge in room), and didn't have tea or coffee (but did have a coffee making machine). Positives however: the room was huuuge, the wait staff were friendly […] (if slow, but I think understaffed), and the hotel is close to Coconut Island and the Gardens, which is quite picturesque. We were using it as a stopover to get an early morning flight, so be warned: close to the airport! (As in, I've stayed in airport hotels further from the runway!) Not a hotel I would recommend to friends, but it is convenient, and in a historic precinct. Les mer

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. The rooms were large and comfortable.Parking was sometimes a bit hard to find at night but that is the only complaint that we had.. Location was also good.

Stayed here for 4 days in January. Having read previous reviews we were not surprised, the hotel is in need of updating and renovations. However our room was clean and very big and our ocean view room on 6th floor was quite comfortable. Free and plentiful parking. Good location for visiting Volcano National Park. Great view, good sized room, balcony lovely, this is a good hotel, but feels like it could do with a little bit of tlc.

All of the hotels in Hilo Bay appear fairly dated,but I think this is the best of them. The staff were helpful and friendly. The restaurant serves a great buffet breakfast that will give a filling start to the day, with plenty of fresh fruit available as well as the usual items. If I have a criticism, it is the houskeeping service which was quite hit […] or miss.. some days the room was cleaned, other days the bed was made and that's about all (bathroom not cleaned, coffee not replaced etc). If I was to come to Hilo again, this is the place I would stay. The covered parking area was useful as it rains a lot here! Les mer

Must get a room on the ocean side of the hotel! The difference in price will make your stay more enjoyable. One of the best views in the world!!!

Getting an ocean view room is worth it--and the staff was helpful when we decided to upgrade to one. But they don't tell you that the dinner and breakfast buffets are VERY overpriced. And the $10 fee for internet service was a complete waste--it went down so often that it was essentially useless. So enjoy the room, but avoid the extra costs.

Great location and nice views. Restaurant was excellent and priced quite reasonably. Rooms were more than adequate. The only thing wrong was that the TV didn't work, but I wasn't going to watch anyway so it was no big deal.

We are wheelchair users. Our room was accessible and easy to move around in. The room was clean and with all the basics provided...plenty of towels-pillows-blankets/cups-bucket/shampoo, etc. We were sad to not have a fridge/microwave though. Rooms not cleaned daily and service very hit and miss. Some days the room was cleaned well and others not at all. There were drink rings on the bedside table for 3 days and the glass table wasn't cleaned until I made a complaint. No one listened on my first complaint, had to ask for a manager the next day. Our bathroom had wallpaper hanging off the […] wall and the main room had a massive patch of black mildew in the corner - very healthy! Thankfully the view out of the window was beautiful and distracted from the mildew. The service in the hotel again was hit and miss. Used the restaurant one night for the buffet and service was fine apart from nothing for a vegetarian - quite poor for this day and age - and when we went to use it again was told our food would be over one hour yet the place was half empty. The Castle Hilo is a lovely place. Magnificent banyan trees, a Japanese Garden next door. It is quite a peaceful hotel although there is never a shortage of birdsong. Open foyer, lovely river/ocean views from bar/dining room. On site laundry is a plus and plenty of spaces for car parking. The staff were excellent. We needed access to a doctor and they […] bent over backwards to help us find the closest clinic and drew maps for us so we wouldn't get lost going there. The rooms are quite large and very comfortable. Will go back without a doubt. Les mer
