The Axel Hotel Barcelona was great. We loved the area it was located in (Eixample) and could walk to many cafes, bars, and clubs within a few minutes. The ambiance of the hotel was perfect. We had a little fiasco with a different hotel and had to book Axel last minute, but it worked out for the best! The bed was extremely comfortable, and the location was very good. My boyfriend and I were amused by the large image of a reclining nude man (blurry, not really offensive), so that is part of the gay-hotel charm.

The most positive attribute of this hotel is the location, but there are many hotels in this area. Shop around. The room interiors are stark and the illuminated "art work" is dated. The roof top deck is nice. There is a wading pool; swimming is not possible. The first floor bar is never, ever, happening. Don't be fooled by the hotel's website. Wi-fi […] is not free. Room interiors are dated and in some cases in need of repair or replacement. This hotel may have been very nice at some point in time, however, its best days seemed to have passed. Les mer

The hotel's location is excellent - right in the middle of all the gay nightlife and restaurants, as well as shopping in both the high-end luxury and midrange options to the north and south. The rooms themselves are incredible - the furnishings are somewhat sparse, but the rooms themselves are spacious for the price, with high ceilings and tall windows. […] My room was a corner unit facing Aribau and Consejo del Ciento, and had both a balcony AND an enclosed patio with stained glass windows (I belive that units ending in 06 have this feature). The service was somewhat sparce, but was not inefficient. I don't usually require room service or other features, but my room was always cleaned when requested, and the other services such as the in-house bar and gym were well done. Although the hotel is marketed towards a gay male audience, women and heterosexuals were also present, and were warmly welcomed by staff and guests. Highly recommended! Les mer

Friendly staff but there was never more than one person at the front desk, so there was too much waiting in line for check-in, etc. Rooms are comfortable and extremely modern and attractive. Great showers! Quiet. Would definitely stay there again.

Arrived at 1.15 in the afternoon same as last time and told the same check in not till two, which I get but still think they could have found us a room. In the bedroom toliet roll hold broke,monsoon shower didn't work and broken pipe in the shower. Woken up again early in the morning by building works - Should be charging for wifi. I really struggle […] as I want this hotel to work but I wont stay again. Les mer

Good hotel, Confortable Rooms, Decent location, Hetrofriendly indeed, Good spa facilities, internet complimentary, extremly helpful staff, spotless housekeeping, No extra charge for wellness area, Short walk to city center(pl catalunya) and also Ave diagonal(shopping),Good transport( bus ans metro) All within a short walk(less than 5 min).

Tremendous Gay hotel in the heart of Eixample. Highly reccommended.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The front desk staff is exceptional. They had fantastic advice on where to go for all kinds of wonderful dining experiences in the area. An added benefit to staying at Axel is that you get in free at a club called Metro, and of course the staff at the front desk can tell you all the best clubs to visit, and of […] any new hot spots. Most everyone in the hotel was gay, and very straight friendly. The bar has some outdoor seating, and is fun for a nightcap. The bartenders are great. The rooms are clean and well designed. A safe is in each room, for you to lock up copies of your passport, credit cards, and excess cash. In the back of the hotel, it is completely quiet, but the rooms are slightly smaller. The front rooms are a bit larger, and have a little balcony which is charming. There is a tiny bit of street noise. It's city life, and to be expected, but if you're from a city, you won't notice a thing. The upgraded rooms are very nice. The maids are great- They are very friendly, and they don't bang on the door at 8:00AM to clean... whew! Breakfast is a tasty buffet, that includes Jamon Serrano. The neighborhood is also very agreeable, with gay and straight businesses all around, but as with all of Barcelona today, you have to be very careful with your belongings, and keep your wallet well hidden. The hotel is also just a short stroll to Paseo De Gracia and all the great shopping there...and Rambla de Cataluna, Plaza de Catalunya and the Ramblas, etc. WiFi just got upgraded too, and the connection is great, in case you have to do business while there. And there are 2 computers that are connected by ethernet, and I believe are free to use for hotel guests. I would definitely stay there again. Really great people make the hotel a wonderful experience. Oh, and there is a GREAT feature for spring and summer! my wife and i booked this hotel not knowing that it was ranked among the top gay hotels in the world. at first this fact made me a little uneasy but after our experience in Barcelona I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone, gay or straight. The staff was so very helpful and friendly. The location was great; within about 10 minutes walking […] to La Rambla, and many choices of restaurants and shopping nearer than that. If there was one concern, it was that the spa area was closed due to maintenance and the rooftop pool and hot tub weren't really warm enough to enjoy. Other than that, everything was perfect. This hotel was in a great location. Convenient to several of Barcelona's major attractions. It was in a great neighborhood with several restaurants and a Starbucks only a few blocks away. The breakfast buffet was good but slightly expensive. Hotel staff was very friendly, free internet with two computers on the first floor and a bar in the lobby. Although the hotel is marketed as a predominately gay hotel there is no reason for hetero people to feel uncomfortable.The location is fine and the interior is very style-led.Rooms are adequate with a good selection of english speaking tv stations.Breakfast was fine but not outstanding for 16euros.Staff were all very friendly and helpful.

I was blown away about how great and nice the front desk staff was in helping me check in and help about questions about the area. I would highly recommend them.

I was very disappointed at the Axel this time after stay here and at their Buenos Aires property several times. They recently remodeled the hotel rooms, the gym, the spa, etc. Sadly the rooms were more incomplete than ever - stale, it seemed like everything was broken and not in that good of shape for being after a remodel.

This was my second stay at Axel Hotel. It's in a great location. The staff is very friendly and the recent renovations have only made a great hotel even better. You can't beat having a cocktail (or 4) on the rooftop terrace at sunset. Great time. Will stay here every time I visit Barcelona.

I selected the hotel for the location and amenities, but would not go back. The rooms are very small and I had severe prolems with the shower draining. I reported the problem shortly after arriving and when I returned later that evening they said it had been cleaned and worked perfectly now. The mext morning it did not work any better. When I reported […] that it had not been fixed and was barely usable, the front desk would not provide a different room or move me to another hotel, even though the shower would start overflowing by the time hot water got to the shower. The staff person I had been talking to, Lubos, basically told me there were no other available rooms, there was nothing they could do and it was basically my problem. They would not have the maintenance person come back in after hours to fix the problem he had not properly taken care of before. Based on some other posts, this seems as though this is an ongoing problem for the hotel. Also, while the website and confirmation did not say anything when I booked the room, the spa services were not operation due to flooding, and there was construction noise after 8 in the morning each day to repair the spa, which reverberated throughout the rooms. I would suggest staying away from this hotel and instead stay at another area hotel such as the Cram hotel around the corner which looked nice, or the Barcelona Center Hotel which I have stayed at, a few blocks away. Everything was excellent and better than expected. Great location, Great room, Wonderful staff. Great Roof top pool....only complaint was bad internet connection. Excellent Place to stay.

The guest relations guy was so helpful, he helped me book some performing arts tickets online through his computer and printed out my voucher to take to the show I went to. Food was great in the restaurant. Drinks were great at the bar. There are 2 bars, one down stairs and one at the top level where the pool is, overlooking the city. WiFi came with […] the room and worked great. It was a little more pricier than most places, which was the only thing hindering me staying more days there. I took an afternoon and walked around for hours site seeing, taking pictures and visiting shops. The clientele is an entirely gay man group, but as a single lesbian traveling alone I felt very comfortable and everyone was so hospitable to me. That said, all people are welcomed to stay and visit here. People who aren't staying at the hotel come to grab drinks at the bars or the restaurant in the hotel. Very nice place to stay and meet people if you're a social butterfly, or just enjoy being around this type of clientele. Les mer

The hotel was still having some work done while we were there so the noise and mess was more than expected. Internet access was a big problem in some of the room. But all and all a great hotel in a great location and I would return to this hotel again for sure when in BCN.

The renovation IS NOT complete. - The Skybar was closed, - the pool was closed, - the spa was closed. - Room Service did not work. It will probably be a great place when all that is done and the JACKHAMMERS are not pounding at 8 AM in the morning until 6 PM at night. But for us, the stay could have been better.

A few blocks from a metro station, walking distance to some restaurants and bars. Gay, lesbian, and straight friendly. Helpful staff - always with a smile. English ok. Room is comfortable with king bed, custom toiletries, modern design. Cool restaurant, bar, and rooftop pool-hottub-lounge area. Would definitely stay here again.

I had heard about this hotel on Logo network's "Bump" travel series. It sounded great but costly. I found a reasonable deal by shopping online and booked 5 nights in October, prepaid. The Axel far exceeded my expectations. Comfortable room with swell amenities, an excellent bed with luxorious duvet, good restaurant, great bar. The roof pool with sauna, […] steam and jacuzzi was a great place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. As a single middle aged gay male, I especially enjoyed the friendliness of the staff and clientele. I can't wait to return and see more of Barcelona - wouldn't dream of staying elsewhere. Les mer

This hotel is really great. The location is fantastic, basically 10 minute walk to the subway or anything else you might want to see, and the concierge went out of his way to help us. The rooms were comfortable and the rooftop bar was amazing. Plus, there was a computer center with free internet usage. Overall, this place was well worth it for the money […] and makes for a great story. All that being said, anyone planning to stay here needs to be aware of one thing. When the hotel says it is gay friendly, it means very gay friendly. My girlfriend and I had an awesome time and would stay at the hotel again, but if you aren't comfortable with homosexuality, this is probably not the place for you. Les mer

This hotel is expensive for what you get. The staff is not very friendly. The rooms are tinny and breakfast in NOT included. It s a gay hotel but Barcelona is VERY gay friendly, so try to get a better deal. Look at one of the Hiltons. They are both alot cheaper and in great locations.

Hotel is in need of improvements---hallways are all tile and sound carries. Blankets are not provided on the beds. Hotel does not have washcloths.

Loved the neighborhood and the staff was terrifically helpful. Our room was a bit small but perfectly adequate. Next time, I'd spring for one of the larger rooms facing the street.

This was a return visit to the Axel and overall the experience was enjoyable. The gay friendly relaxed space in an excellent location made for a very agreeable break. However, standards in some areas are noticably slipping. The roof terrace was closed for "private parties" on two of the four nights of our stay. Since this area is one of the major selling […] points of the hotel this is not acceptable, especially as the single creakingly slow lift was crowded all evening with local "celebs" to the inconvenience of the paying guests. The sauna and steam room on the terrace could also use some freshening up and the hot tub was refreshingly cool in the summer sunshine, though this came as a surprise to some users. Prices for drinks and snacks by the pool are among the highest in Barcelona and do not reflect the appropriate 3 Star rating of this property. Les mer

I could not find any fault wiht the Axel. I stayed only one night on my way to another destination, but I wished I had time to stay more. A friendly and helpful reception, clean high tech rooms, unlimited complimentary bottled water, excercise room/sauna,steam, and a roof top deck/bar were all positive features.

Et super hotel der ligger rigtig godt i forhold til shopping, turist attraktioner og restauranter. 3 gader fra Rambla'en. Et rigtig godt hotel med god service og venlig betjening, fantastisk bar og terrasse på taget. Lækkert indrettet værelse, med alle de fornødenheder man nu en gang måtte have brug for.

Wurde in der Rezeption super empfangen - sehr freundlich. Aber leider kamm das Zimmer etwas abgenutzt vor. Dazu war folgendes nicht in Ordnung: Lichtverhältnisse, Duschslauch war kaputt, Duschtür war kaputt (wasser ist ausgetreten), Duschboden extrem rutschig (bin getstürzt) und Notfall Licht konnte nicht ausgeschaltet werden. Das Restaurant war geschlossen, […] und die Bar war dunkel, laut, kalt und unfreundlich (da bekam man keinen Lust ein zu trinken). Konklusion: Preis/Leistung = unterdurchschnittlich - ich werde diese Hotel nicht wieder buchen. Les mer

Nous avons passé avec mon ami 2 nuits dans cet hôtel, très bien situé, à seulement 10 à pied de la Plaza Catalunya. Le personnel est très aimable et serviable, les chambres design, et nous avons même pu profiter du jacuzzi sur le toit :) Je le recommande vivement, aussi bien pour des groupes d'amis que pour les couples (gay ou hétéro).

Ein Gay Hotel ist nicht jedermanns Sache. Da wir jedoch keine negativen Erfahrungen gemacht haben, ausser das es im gesamten unteren Bereich des Hotels nach Spa riecht, können wir das Hotel eigentlich weiterempfehlen.
