To be honest, this place turned me off 'quaint country inns' and B&B's for life. I'll never take the chance again. People pay outrageous amounts unless they book through a service like this, and if you do that, expect a less-than-preferable room. Forgive me for this incredibly scathing review, but there is not exaggeration involved- only profound disappointment. […] I'm not sure how many (if any) of the rooms are actually ok, but the ones I saw appeared the same as mine- laughable. First, it's not clean at all. Dust on all the lamps, fixtures, even the alarm clock- MOLD on the window frames. The floors were hardly (if at all) vacuumed, and the decor pillows had obviously used cases. Coffee and god knows what else splattered on the walls and baseboards. The bathrooms are beyond cramped. Dated doesn't begin to describe the place, and updated should never come into the conversation. Good luck finding outlets if you have more than one device. At least they provide a dirty un-surge protected multiport... You can also hear every single sound within the hotel and outside. It's really terrible, as is the low-hanging 'tapestry' above the beds. Atrocious, really. I absolutely could not wait to get back to the little unit at Bayfront One, which is probably the only place in the entire town I'd recommend- especially if you have allergies. And even then, I'd only suggest their one-bedroom unit because of noise. As for Carter House, skip the inn part completely, unless you really want to pay through the nose for entirely undue pretentiousness. I didn't even bother with the restaurant, even though the main parts of the hotel are actually quite nice n comparison to the rooms. I understand they have an ' on-site organic garden', but nothing growing around there could be particularly healthy with the traffic, runoff, old sewage pipes, etc, under the ground. "Over Priced!!!"
At the end of the day, the hotel is just a old house remodeled to be a hotel. The hotel is too expensive compared to the others in the areas. I felt I got short changed.

It could very well be the "best" hotel in town but I don't believe it deserve such a premium price giving the hotel condition. The hotel is definitely over price when comparing to other hotels in the area. I did not get what I paid for.....

This beautifully appointed small hotel is on the edge of the historic "Old Town" area of Eureka. We had a beautiful two room suite with a jacuzzi and a very comfortable bed. The hotel is quiet, and the restaurant is superb. The wine list could be the most extensive I have ever seen.
"Relaxing and quiet"
We stayed in this lovely B & B type hotel only one night and wish it had been more. The staff is helpful and accomodating in every way. If we need a place in Eureka again, this would certainly be our first choice. The included breakfast was excellent and served in a tasteful dining room. Parking is on the street.

The hotel was fabulous, but as we were driving there (about 10pm) we saw prostitutes hanging around. In the morning there were other folks yelling strange things. But maybe that's just Eureka.

Great Inn... staff very plesant and helpful. Had dinner in the dining room and the food was great. Very nice breakfast in the morning.. The room was big, but I think the Mattress needs to be updated.

We stayed at the Carter House Inns for two nights while visiting the Redwood National Forest. It was about an hour drive to the park, but there really wasn't anywhere else to stay besides Eureka except for camp sites. The hotel was very nice and clean. Our room was in the old Victorian mansion across the street. It was cozy and fun to hang out in the […] common area with a fireplace and comfortable couches. The only thing I didn't like was that the room was a bit cold, but there was a space heater and they turned up the heat in the house for us. The restaurant 301 in the hotel was fabulous. Some of the best food I've ever eaten. The breakfasts were delicious, almost gourmet, and it was included in the room. We ate dinner there the last night of our stay, and I'd have to say it was some of the best food I've ever eaten. It was pricey, but delicious. They decorate everything with flowers and not only did it taste amazing, it looked amazing. The hotel staff was pretty friendly and helped us find places to hike and see the Redwoods, as well as find places to eat around the hotel. One woman even went on a hunt for ice (double bagged) to put with our lunch to keep it cold. She went above and beyond to help me out, and I really appreciate that kind of service. In general, the hotel was nice, clean, and friendly, the food was amazing, and it was in a good location close to historic Eureka with lots of shops and places to eat, and close enough (about an hour) to the state and national Redwood parks. Carter House Inn was a great hotel experience. Lovely accommodations yet casual atmosphere made it the perfect choice for us. The staff was very personable, engaging and responsive to our needs, even anticipating that which would make us most comfortable and welcomed. The complimentary breakfast and wait-staff were the perfect way to start the day.

i thought id book the most expensive hotel as it was towards the end of my trip and i didnt want to gamble with hotels in eureka. The place was cozy and the people were nice but it wasnt what i had expected. I thought we would be in one of the old houses but we were across the street in what seemed to be an old office building converted into rooms. […] Again the rooms are decent and cozy just not what i expected. everything in eureka is close so location wasnt a big deal either. Not worth the price in my opinion but not sure what else is in eureka. Les mer

The hotel was warm and inviting. The staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant was rated highly for a good reason. The food was delicious! The salad with fried strawberries was out of this world. I highly recommend staying here.
"Delightful Place To Stay"
Being from Florida, we found Eureka a little chilly, so it was nice to be greeted with wine and munchies by the fireplace. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the restaurant is superb.
This is a beautiful hotel made up of a number of restored Victorians in the center of the historic neighborhood of Eureka. We were greeted with a glass of wine and shown to a pleasant room. Everythng was lovely, but... The neighborhood doesn't feel unsafe, but it is worth knowing that it is only partially re-developed. There were a number of burned […] out street people walking around amidst these gorgeous Victorians...quite a contrast in cultures. The service in the breakfast room was warm and attentive, and it is a pleasant, sunny room. However, the food was unremarkable, and I wouldn't have paid the quoted price of 16 dollars out of pocket. Frankly, there wasn't as much of interst in downtown Eureka as I expected. I might pick another town to stay overnight on a future visit to the coast. It iwasn't as quaint as hoped for, but they are clearly trying to improve it. It was worth a drive through to see the Victorians, but next time that's all I'll do. On the other hand, we walked around the old town section until 10 at night, and there were a few intersting restaurants and lots of shope open on this 4th of July week end. We found an interesting used bookstore, and the Lost Coast brewery was a fun place to eat. Les mer

I enjoyed my stay, the old victorian hotel was beautifully maintained, the bed comfortable, and the staff was very polite.

We stayed at the Carter House after a few days' camping, and were very pleased with the facility and especially with the attentive and friendly service. Staff were helpful and friendly without being overbearing. The restaurant is exquisite. We've been visiting Eureka for 15+ years, and will definitely stay here again. Best place in town!
