Glenmore Plaza Hotel - Avalon

Glenmore Plaza is a quaint, historical hotel located on the "flats" of Avalon. The lobby features detailed wood paneling from a bygone era. The hotel staff was relaxed and very helpful. It seemed to be occupied by many workers who are currently refurbishing the upper floors of the facility. Despite this, my room was quiet, clean and restful. The Hotel does not tell you that there is a sports bar two doors down with a live band and loud music and people yelling in the street until late at night...very disappointed.

I wouln not recommend this hotel until current renovations are completed. This is an old hotel. Floors are not level and the electrical requires updating. Our bed was very uncomfortable....mattress needs to be replaced as it caved in the middle. The hotel staff and hotel location were great, but otherwise hotel was overpriced and overrated.

The best thing about this hotel was it's location. Right downtown with an easy walk to everything. However everything else about the hotel was pretty horrific. There were no working outlets in the bathroom, no closet in the room, the room floor was tilted, the bathroom ceiling had flaking paint and the only view from the windows was the backside of […] other buildings. The staff also failed to mention that there was construction going on in the hotel which meant that promptly @ 9 am you were guaranteed a wake up call with loud pounding and power tools whether you wanted it or not. The continental breakfast was a joke, and not well stocked, I have had better at at Howard Johnsons. If you can get a great deal, stay here if not go somewhere else to enjoy the beauty of Avalon Les mer

Disappointed in thecondition of this old hotel. It lacks the glorious luster of other days do to the fact that it seems to be falling apart.

Was my first visit to this hotel, and overall it was nice, a copy things did come to mind. During the continental breakfast, it would have been nice to have small trays to return coffee to the room, there is no elevator, and we stayed on the third floor, the wife wanted breakfast and coffee, so it was next to impossible to deliver the pastries (which […] were awesome) back to the room along with coffee with no trays available. The Glenmore Plaza has a lovely and appealing exterior, but inside it's poorly furnished. The lobby carpets are dirty, lobby sofa has cheap slipcovers. Our room was spartan with no comfortable chair, hard mattress with thin pillows, cheap bedspread, think a step down from Motel 6. My husband and I took a trip to Catalina for our birthday's on Dec 8. We checked in and were pleasntly surprised with the service and room. Then we settled in and construction was going on the whole afternoon. They are doing construction, LOTS of it!!! Very noisy!!!! Kids kept running up and down the stairs. We kept our kids at home so were hoping to […] get away from noise. Not the place for quiet. Trash truck came at 6:30 AM! And people in the alleyway were up all night talking and screaming. It was a Thursday night. So annoying. We just wanted to sleep. No such luck. To top it off, there were these Transients littering the lobby all day. I felt very dirty and uncomfortable. Not many choices in Catalina at this rate. It's a bit old, but manageable. Staff are really nice. Maid leaves early so you must get your rooms cleaned early. Overall, it's decent.

We had a great stay at the Glenmore. Looking forward to staying there again real soon.

The hotel is a little bit old but the room has certainly been repainted a short time ago. The bathroom was quite big. The bed was comfortable. We had a space heater that was enough to heat the room. We had wifi access (for free) in the room. The only problem in the room was a water leak from the ceiling (certainly the bathroom above)! The staff was […] nice. The breakfast is coffee, tea, orange juice, fruits, bagels and cream cheese. This is not what we call a "continental" breakfast for french people but it was ok. Clean, friendly staff. Very happy with hotel.

Pardon the vernacular, but the reviews for this hotel were relatively bad, which made me a bit nervous. However, I was pleasantly surprised as I entered the hotel. The person at the desk was nice and efficient. The lobby looked cozy. My room was "Catalina cute" and clean. There was only one sticky spot in the wardrobe drawer, but I did not need to use […] the wardrobe. The room heater worked well, and the bathroom was nice and clean. The location of the hotel can't be beat, as it it close to everything. My only minor complaint is that the water in the sink took a long time to heat up. But, that was to be expected since this is one of the oldest hotels on the island. And, there was one dingy wash cloth. The hotel internet worked quickly. There was also a shuttle service available, but I did not use it, as the Catalina Express dock is quite near. Room was cute and clean best of all in was right in the center of town. The morning did get pretty loud with some near by construction.

You might have to change rooms if rains, but the excellent location, charming rooms and the AMBIANCE of Avalon more than make up for it. We enjoyed our stay.

Staff was friendly, room was clean and cozy. They granted us a late check out because it was our wedding anniversary. We asked for any recommendations as far as eating and sightseeing and they gladly told us what spots to check out. Courtesy van pick us up and dropped us off at the dock. Do not stay here if you expect shiny, slick and new. This is an old hotel with the quirks and charm that comes with that. Lots of stairs, the floors slope, and internet is spotty at best. Do not stay above the 2nd floor if you want internet at all. BUT, every employee that I came across was very friendly and helpful and made my stay enjoyable. Expect to be dumped in a street front room which is very noisy. From the 3rd floor we felt we were in the bar down the street. Loud, drunken noise boomed through the cheap windows until 2:30am. Then the garbage trucks started up by 7am. The front desk person blamed US for booking online, and not specifically saying we wanted to quiet room. He also added […] we couldn't expect them to try to insulate against the noise. The new paint job tried to distract you from the shoddy maintenance. Towel racks torn from the wall, sagging ceiling beams. It is an old hotel, with sloping, sagging floors. Expect no sleep or plan to complain to get a quiet room. Les mer

This hotel was a mixed bag. The folks working there were fantastic. The hotel needs serious upgrading. The toilet ran and my husband had to fix it. The first room we had (room 108) was just awful. The drawers in the dresser had crud and dirt in them and the furniture was torn and ragged making me afraid to even sit in it for fear of bugs and the smell […] was awful. The staff moved us upstairs in the inner courtyard which kept the noise down from the bar which is across the street and doesn't close until 2am (then of course the cleaning crew dumps the trash at 2:40 with the sound of glass being piled into the trash cans). All in all, the second room was much better but the hotel seriously needs to be upgraded. They have done some surface upgrades but spendng a little more to ensure the toilet stops running, the maids leave the proper linens (we never did get wash cloths unless we asked for them), and that they upgrade the lobby furniture to some non-fabric furniture so the odors are not held in would be a good idea. This has got to be the best location for the money in town. The staff is very friendly and there is a nice breakfast. This is an old hotel, with stairs and mostly smallish rooms. The lobby is very original and comfortable. Across from Chi Chi (The noisey bar..) and a block from the small city beach.

Cool, mellow, hotel. Almost country style. There is no elevator but it adds to the originality of the 100 year old building.

CLOSE TO ALL A TOURIST WOULD NEED- food,drink,and beach. Ask for lower floors if you can't handle steep stars. Avalon is a little beach town with good people working hard to give a good experience. I,d like to go back and dive. I didn't because of reading Avalon beach is in the top 10% most polluted beaches in California. That stopped me and I unpacked […] my snorkeling etc. But once I explored and found a PADI dive shop realized there are many other options around. Les mer

I really loved the Glenmore Plaza Hotel. A gorgeous old victorian building, comfortable room and perfect location. Enjoyed my 4 night stay and would recommend to others

We arrived on Catalina Island and called the hotel asking about a pickup off the boat. The person said they would be right there to pick us up. We waited a half hour and I called back, got the same person and she said she had gotten busy and would be right down to pick us up, she did arrived in about 5 minutes. On the way back to the hotel she was telling […] us how busy they were with a wedding party. When we arrived at the hotel, first of all the picture you see of the hotel is not their hotel, not sure where they got the picture, photo shop I suppose. We had booked the rooms 4 months in advance so I am pretty sure they knew we were coming, and we booked 2 queen sized rooms for 4 adults. When we got to the rooms I had booked for our guests they were nothing like the pictures of the rooms on the website and they were absolutely not queen size beds, almost looked smaller than full size. My wife and I went up to our room and they same thing , a very small bed and definitely not pillow to as advertised. We were going back down to our guest room and on the way we passed the lady who had picked us up at the dock and also checked us in to the room. We asked her about our booking of 2 rooms with queen size beds and she took us back down stairs, no elevator in the hotel, and she started checking our reservation. She agreed we had book queen size beds for both rooms and she said she would try to move us. We waited about 30 minutes while she played around with her reservation computer and by that time our guests had come down stairs as we were getting hungry and wanted to go get something to eat. The lady at the desk said for us to go ahead and she would continue trying to move us and she would let us know. We left to go out for lunch and while eating I received a phone call from her on my cell phone. She said she had found one other room with a king bed and that after checking our guest room had a queen size bed and that would have to stay. It was absolutely not a queen size be Les mer

Great hotel, highly recomend .. Not a brand new hotel or full of great amenities and new furniture but very clean , neat and comfortable beds! Location is the best part .. Stay there you ll love it

Horrible room so dirty, bedspread had blood stains dirt holes in it the pillows were at least 20 years old, my daughter would not even shower in the room the blinds did not close the thing to close them was broken off so I stood on a chair and tried to turn it myself when I got it closed a little they were cracked so people could still see in if you […] were changing your cloths. It was so dirty that we pulled off all the linens and slept on our beach towels. The head board was was so loose that every time you moved it feel forward and made a noise so loud we bearly slept at all. There was no phone in the room so when I called for a wake up call the guy first laughted at me like I was nuts to even consider it, then as I proceeded to tell him how bad the room was he started a fight with me and basically said that's the room you get when you order with those companies. Very pleasant hotel and staff; comfortable , able to come and go easily, in the center of town. The only thing we did not realize is the time people outside would stay up until. The Hotel has a warm historical exterior and long history, and a list of famous guest that date back to the 1800's. But in the 2011 era were comfort, relaxation, modernization, and high technology has spoiled us all, this hotel is still in the 1800's. This hotel has a great location and great customer service. The first room was very small and mediocre, especially for the premium price we paid for the weekend stay. However, the ceiling in the bathroom, started to leak and we asked to move rooms. Without issue, we were moved to a VERY nice King Bed Suite across the hall. The hotel is the oldest on the Island and it has been well maintained, but I guess I'm not ready to live in the 19th century and now I know I like conveniences like a fan that doesn't make a thumping noise all night and a breakfast of pastry that isn't soggy. Great location. My wife and I walked off the ferry with our luggage, past the main walking strip with many of the shops, and into the lobby of Glenmore. We later found out that there is a free shuttle. I don't think it is necessary if you are able to walk. The room wasn't new. This is the oldest hotel in Avalon according to a brief summary I read in […] the lobby. It was clean and just what we needed for a brief stay at Avalon. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our first room left a lot to be desired but they moved us and it was much better. The hotel could use some badly needed repairs (slants badly) but it's old and has a lot of charm. Location was excellent.

What a dump. Hotel is run down. Towels and linens were old, worn and should have been replaced years ago. The hotel staff was completely useless. Needed to argue to get them to take us to the ferry using their free shuttle at 7 in the morning. Staying here is an absolute waste of your time and your money.

Recently stayed with my daughter on a weekend trip. Staff was very friendly. Hotel could use a little tender loving care. Bathroom fixtures were stained with previous rusty leak marks. Window treatments were broken and worn. Telephone did not work. Upon check in, I casually asked the desk clerk if the room was a nice one. She replied, "well, my favorite […] part of this hotel has always the lobby, it's really the coolest part of this hotel." That pretty much said it all. The hotel was in prime location and with a little care could really be a hot spot. If I recommended, it would definitely come with a warning: Have no expectations and you won't be disappointed. With so many hotels in Avalon, I would not choose to stay at this hotel again. Drawn to it for its Victorian look, it really was a let-down as far as a hotel experience. There was no hair dryer, there was no room service, there was a very poor breakfast offering in the morning and the towels in the room were really old and used beyond a typical hotel […] offering. On the positive side, the staff were really nice and the shuttle to the ferry was convenient. if all hotels were as good or equal on staff - then I'd say this is not a good selection for your trip. My former fiancée (she's now my wife) and I live in San Diego, CA. We chose to go to Catalina Island for our honeymoon. When searching for hotels via the internet, we found dozens of potential places to stay. In further researching our options (price compared to amenities compared to location compared to customer reviews) we chose the Glenmore Plaza […] Hotel. The night prior to our arrival, my wife (Shelley) called the hotel and spoke to Jack (this was around 1am). Jack was friendly, informative and super helpful (he gave us a real good feeling about the Glenmore before we even got there)! Upon arrival, Garrett (one of the sons of the family-run hotel) promptly picked us up at the Catalina Express boat terminal. He too was super friendly and very welcoming. While checking in at the front desk (an hour early), Jimmy (another son of the family that owns/runs the hotel) was equally as friendly as Jack & Garrett. While waiting for our room to become available, Jack arrived for his afternoon/evening shift. A discussion then took place between Jack & Jimmy as they called out different room numbers for us. In the end, Jack & Jimmy gave Shelley & me a "double upgrade" to one of their luxury suites (Room 201). The room was way nicer than we could ever have imagined. It had a fridge, cable tv, microwave, a couch, a jetted hot tub bathtub, and a small dinette table for two. And to make things even more amazing, the room was a beautiful shade of purple with white trim & wicker furniture (our wedding colors)! The Glenmore Plaza Hotel is a beautiful old Victorian Hotel right in the heart of Avalon (about a 1/2 block from Crescent right in the heart of all the action). Our room was cleaned daily. Our bedding was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Everything in the room worked well (fridge was cold, shower was hot, tv reception was good, etc). The location of the hotel couldn't get much better. It was very convenient. The hotel is older and as you move from different floors you can tell that buildings were connected or added on due to the change in the leve of the floor. It was kept up pretty well. It was a nice quaint hotel. The staff was very friendly. They even offered to help carry our […] luggage up to our room. Cons: Check in was a little slow. They had to go check on our room. That took a while and I suspect that our room was not ready and therefore why they gave us an upgrade. Which was just fine, of course. There is no elevator. So you need to carry your luggage up the stairs and we were on the 3rd floor. I knew that there were only stairs when I booked the reservation, I was ok with this. But if you can get a room on the 1st floor that would be advisable. On the day we were checking out, I went to the front desk at 7am. No one was there? it was closed. There was a number to call if there was an emergency. Well, I didn't think needing to check out to catch my boat at 8am was an emergency. Luckily, a friend of one of the owners/employees walked by and she said someone would be right up. it seamed like a longtime to me, when your thinking you can't miss the boat because you then need to get to the mainland to catch your flight home. They did show up and then offered to give us a ride to the boat landing in the shuttle service they have, Overall I was probably stay here, since the cost of the hotel was very reasonable, the location was perfect, it was a nice quaint hotel, and the staff was very friendly. Room wasn't clean, there were rubber bands and plastic on the floor. Obviously, floor wasn't cleaned. Toilet was not flushing, they had to fix it. No elevator. Breakfast, so bad, don't want to talk abt it. If you are on this Island just to be by the beach and enjoy the out-doors, you can use this hotel to sleep. Don't expect more. We booked this hotel at the last minute, and we were pleasantly surprised by the room, considering our budget and the timing of our booking. This hotel is right in the middle of "downtown" Avalon, meaning restaurants and bars are literally at your doorstep. As you might guess, this also happens to be why I didn't give the hotel higher marks. The noise […] from the late night patrons outside kept us up most of the night, including at one point, drunken teenagers throwing objects at the hotel (and our window!) in order to wake up their friend, having been locked out of the hotel after midnight. Rooms are nice enough for the price, however beware of the rather thin walls. If you're looking for an affordable room that's close to all the storefronts and you plan on exploring the island most of the time, then the Glenmore Plaza should fit the bill. However, if you have a higher budget and would like a little more peace and quiet, then you may want to try another option. Les mer

As soon as we checked in the receptionist was very welcoming and delightful. The gentleman that helped us in the evening was very accommodating and funny. He shared stories with us about Catalina, his family, and a number of other stuff. There was no AC in our room so he switched us to another room that did have an ac unit free of charge. On our trip we found out that the hotel is celebrating its 130th birthday! It is the oldest hotel on the island and the second oldest hotel in California. It is old, but it is charming. The front desk had the nicest people, which made the stay PERFECT!
