MAX Serviced Apartments Reading, Number 18 - Reading

I arrived after hours so I had to follow instructions on getting into the building and getting my key. These instructions were good and clear and I was pleased to get into the apartment without issue. However the apartment I was allocated was a ground floor apartment and I was very dissatisfied as the double glazing was poorly soundproofed and the windows […] in the lounge and bedroom were adjacent to a very busy and noisy road - I hardly got any sleep. The apartments blinds were crumpled and so everyone on the street could see in directly to the living room making it very uncomfortable. A number of the lights were not working in the bathroom and only 2 pillows were provided - furthermore the sofa could not have been more uncomfortable. After little sleep I complained about the apartment and the receptionist moved me to the back of the building to the 1st Floor. The apartment was much better in terms of noise pollution and I got a good night's sleep. The lesson is dont accept a room on the ground floor facing the road - you will not get any sleep. Les mer

Lovely, large apartment and well worth the money. Go for the odd numbered rooms as they don't sit on a busy road.

Location is excellent and overall the hotel is still good value for money. When we arrived it was very warm though and we had to open the windows to get some air into the rooms. I've stayed here many times over the years and I must say that it is beginning to look a bit dated now, despite the lower floor refurbishment when they got flooded some time […] ago. The rooms themselves are very clean - except the easy chair which had a lot of stains on it. Cooking facilities are fairly basic, but you could cook a meal if you wanted to. Shower was cold even though the bath and sink hot taps emitted hot water. Overall I'd say this hotel is still good value for money if you're looking for a home from home and it suited me. My grumbles are only minor, but there are few places where everything will be perfect so it's still one of my favourite places to stay when I'm in Reading. The biggest advantage of staying here for me is that I can just go in, relax, and be in my own space. Les mer

Mostly a positive experience; hotel staff was friendly and helpful. My room was on the 4th floor, where it was exceedingly warm. I would have liked to have been moved to a different area of the hotel but was informed this would not be possible. There were a few things that need to be addressed; the dishwasher was not working properly, the bathroom sink […] needed to be repaired, and there needs to be a telephone in the room. For any City Centre requirements, Number-18 (Max Hotels) is very well located. Rooms on the front of the hotel tend to be a bit on the noisy side if you like to sleep with the windows open due to the traffic passing by, but on the rear, the rooms are very quiet even with windows open. I've spent the last few years staying here whenever I visit Reading, […] and always find the staff to be very polite and helpful. However, the rooms are beginning to become a bit on the tatty side now and could do with a refurbishment to bring them back into the 21st Century. Local competition for apartments is located just around the corner and also a few hundred yards (metres) along the road, and if you do a comparison, then Number-18 isn't as up to date as the competition, but the rooms here are cheaper. There's a small supermarket just on the corner, and it takes only a few minutes to walk into the Oracle centre. Cooking facilities are provided as are washing, drying, and ironing equipment. Overall, it's a home from home in many respects. As I only stay a few days each visit, it suits me for what I need, but I hope the quality won't deteriorate further, otherwise I might have to go over to the competition. Les mer

I've been staying in these apartments over the past few years, so I've seen the progressions from the original building. There are now more rooms than originally designed due to the building being extended upwards and outwards. Sometimes the maintenance has lacked resulting in things like the water temperature being a bit on the cool side, but this […] is probably because the previous occupant hasn't reported it. I've found that when I report a problem, it's resolved very quickly - either the same day, or sometimes the next day depending on the nature of the problem. Staff are very friendly, and although Reception isn't manned 24 hours, there is an out of hours telephone contact in case you need assistance. Prices have increased lately, but that's probably due to the overall increase in costs in the industry. The apartments are however still good value for money in my opinion. I prefer to look after myself when I travel away from home, and these apartments offer full cooking and washing facilities as well as TV and free WiFi. There is a Tesco Express just yards away from the building, a chip shop over the road, then round the corner it's only a short walk to the Oracle Shopping Centre and Reading Town Centre where you'll find all the usual banks, shops, etc. Overall I've given these apartments a 5 star rating even though there are a few minor issues here and there. It depends what you want as to how you view your own experience. For me, it's fine, it's comfortable, and I can come 'home' from work and just chill! Not the best apartments I've stayed in, but they are certainly a long way from being the worst and I have no complaints. Les mer

Our overall experience was a good one with only the minor glitch at arrival. The rooms are clean and modern with all the amenities necessary of an aparthotel. The hotel is located next to a small grocer and within a five minute stroll to the shopping/restaurant district. The housekeeping staff were pleasant and efficient. However, rooms are cleaned […] on a once a week basis with the day being determined by the floor you are on. In our case, for an eight night stay, we arrived Saturday and had the room serviced on Monday. Would have been nicer to see them on Wednesday or Thursday instead. Finally, there is a difference between a firm bed and a cheap bed. The beds are cheap and uncomfortable. I've travelled throughout Europe and elsewhere. This is one of the first times I've found the bed to be uncomfortable due to it's quality rather than my preferences. And that's a shame. Eight nights of poor sleep does not a happy tourist make.
