Hotel Arqueologo - Cusco

We, two couples, arrived at this hotel to stay three nights before doing the Inca Trail, and had booked 2 nights after. To allow ourselves some luxury, we upgraded the standard rooms to superior rooms for the 2 last nights. When we came back late in the evening after the Inca Trail, the rooms we were offered were to our dismay the exact same type as […] the ones we had had earlier. Our friends, however, were given a much smaller room! When asking the receptionists about this, the female receptionist explained that this was because we had had problems with cold showers with our prior stay...! None of the receptionists were very eager to fix the problem, but told us they could set us up with a new room the next day. Only when threatening to have our money back, were our friends put in a bigger room. This was apparently the Inca Suite, the nicest type of room they offer. Good. We also found at then that for our first 3 nights, we had - without being told - been given Superior Rooms instead of Standard Rooms. Our disappointment come from not being informed, as we were expecting better rooms for our last 2 nights. Basically, service at the hotel is lousy. Our stay could have been so much more positive if the staff was friendlier. We could not help feel we were in the way somehow, or had done something wrong. When complaining about cold showers, or a bathroom light that was constantly flashing or even about the mix-up of rooms, we were only met with a less-than-postive attitude. The night porter was more friendly, but seemed to lack the authority to get things fixed, and had to call his boss for confirmation. Too bad. Breakfast is good, though! But do yourself a favour and find a different hotel in this price range. Les mer

While the hotel itself is quite nice and situated close to the city centre, we were very disappointed to find that showers offered cold, or at best luke-warm, water. Even worse, when complaining, the receptionist came to our room, put her hand under the shower and confidently said the shower was warm. That's service for you! In the bar or restaurant, […] prepare to be patient. Even though none of them were ever busy when we where there, the bartenders, waiters etc. (there was no lack of personell) took forever to expedite our orders. Even a drink or a coffee would easily take 15 minutes or more to arrive after ordering. In the room, we had a large installation just outside our window. I'm not sure what it was, for heating or ventilation most likely, but it was making a lot of noise like from a big fan. Very annoying when trying to get some sleep! Overall we had several minor annoyances during our stay, but the biggest by far was the female receptionist's lack of service. The night porters were quite friendly and helpful; maybe if they were working dayshifts the cold shower problem could have been resolved easily. As it was, we were really quite put back by the lack of service and would recommend you look for a different hotel in the same price range when visiting Cusco. Les mer

What a beautiful hotel! We had a little issue with the airport transfer upon arrival (there was some miscommunication and they did not pick us up, so make sure to email your travel information and get a confirmation) but with a bit of explaining, the hotel made up for it and we were happy overall. The courtyard and overall layout of the hotel is just […] so pretty. Our loft room was interesting and really nice, and the breakfast was excellent as well. Everything was clean and well put together. There is a bar/tapas restaurant located there too that provided some entertainment for us also. Overall, we would definitely stay here again and had a great experience. It is towards the top of town, so if you can't walk uphill to get home from the main areas, then that may be a problem for some (but not for us). Les mer

Lovely, quiet hotel. Requested a triple room; however, we were disappointed when we saw the set up was only for two, no bedsheets nor third towel for the third person. Third bed was just a fold up bed not even prepared and we got back to Cusco so late from Machu Picchu with an early start the next day to Puno that we didn't bother going back to reception […] to complain and our friend just ended up unrolling her sleeping bag and crushing on the couch. Super friendly staff! They helped us arrange for cabs, an early morning breakfast at 5 AM just for us since we had to take the first train from Cusco to Machu pichu. They actually had the bar opened JUST for us during one of the nights. Cant seem to get over their overall help.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel one night in oct 2012 in the superior suite and loved it! The loft style with the bedroom at the top, skylight, large shower and modern design was perfect. The hotel came with a breakfast buffet that was elaborate and included made to order eggs, various breads, fruit, yogurt, granola, tea, coffee, juice, etc. There […] was also a beautiful view from the breakfast area. Comfortable and well designed hotel in the heart of the historic district of Cusco. The complimentary Pisco Sours were a nice touch and the breakfast buffet was excellent. There were no TVs in the rooms which was surprising given the price.

The room was unique: 2 story with spiral case with a certain amount of charm. Functionally, lighting was substandard and switching was odd. Natural light was minimal. Not enough seating despite room. Hotel Arqueologo was a great experience during my trip to Cusco. When I arrived I was greeted by Giuseppe, who was extremely polite and helpful right from the start, as well for the duration of my stay. The hotel staff were all around awesome, the food at the restaurant was very good and the hotel bar was elegant and cozy. This is the most charming 'hotel' that doesn't feel like a hotel - it feels like you're staying with some awesome, funky friend who has a lot of money. The courtyard is beautiful with flowers and potted plants, big chairs, fluffy pillows, cool art. Off the patio is outdoor seating for the restaurant which has the coolest expatriate French pianist a […] few days a week (classically trained but plays everything). The food and service are top-notch and breakfast is served in a quiet, quaint corner of the hotel that holds amazing views of Cuzco. Good location, 10 minute walk to plaza de armas but in quiet area. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Stored our luggage no problem during our inca trail hike. Very comfortable large beds. Hot showers.

It has the real feel of the tipical old Cuzco house. Breakfast is good, service perfect. Very well located. If you are looking for the real Cuzco expirience is the place to stay.

great hotel! it is very central; just 3 blocks from plaza de armas. the staff members are all very friendly and helpful. need a taxi to poroy station or the airport? check! you want coco tea? check! you want them to buy your machu picchu tix before you arrive? check! need recommendations on what to do or where to eat? check! they will help you with […] anything you need. the blankets are so crazy cozy that it was hard to get out of bed in the morning. my friend and i had a wonderful time here and had absolutely no complaints at all. if i come back to cuzco, i will definitely stay at hotel arqueologo again. The hotel is very close to the main square & all the main services so conveniently located in the narrow streets of the old city. Rooms were clean, but we had constant problems with water drainage of the shower. Breakfast was not what we have experienced in other hotels for less money. I would look for something else next time.

Just up the hill from the Plaza and the room was great. Would definitely recommend and stay here again. The complimentary Pisco Sour was a nice touch as well. The bar and lounge was really a treat to sit by the fire and relax.

A beautiful hotel right next to Plaza de Armas in Cusco! Walking distance to everything, and only a short distance from great sites. Very charming colonial style hotel. The walk to the Plaza de Armas was far enough to absorb a bit of the great neighborhood vibe but close enough to not be exhausted. The location is great, about 3 - 4 blocks UPHILL (Think High Altitude) from the Plaza De Armas. The full breakfast was very nice. The room was in 2 levels with a small room, couch, shelf, bathroom on the 1st. and the 2 beds on the second level. The 2 levels were connected by a spiral staircase which had no handrails and difficult to use. The shower […] design led to water on the bathroom floor whenever used. Staff was very, very nice and helpful, and promptly accomodated every request, if you could find them and they weren't trying to service other people...frequently, the place seemed understaffed. Hotel is quaint and happily situated. No heat, tho it ran into the 30s at night. While one was warm enough under the blankets at night, it felt somewhat like […] camping... the minute you left the bed, it was cold. Eventually, we got a space heater, which helped somewhat. While the courtyard is quaint looking, the seating was very uncomfortable and it is outdoors, so it was also was cold and dark at night. The only other place to relax was the bar, which was inviting, but dark, frequently unmanned and, also, cold. The bed was a fabulous and comfortable king in a loft. Under the loft, was the seating area and bathroom, which were very small and cramped; The desk barely fit a laptop and a few pieces of paper. There was no other table top or counter on which to put your things. Other than that, the room had a fouton for sitting. With little space for luggage, suitcases end up on the fouton and then one has little place to sit. Lighting was frugal; had to be in the bath or by the window (where there was no seating) to read. Bath was clean with nice hot water, but the shower door leaked and a flood on the floor was unavoidable when showering. Larger than standard rooms may be more comfortable, but they are pricey. Summer may be more pleasant. Les mer

We stayed at this hotel on our way to Machu Pichu and on the way back. We loved the charm and beauty of it. Good service, courteous and helpful staff. Comfy beds. I loved that it was not a canned place.

When I pictured Cuzco, Arqueologo (sp?) was the place I pictured: arranged like a Spanish villa with a big courtyard, art on on the walls, a great bar and lounge, a good restaurant and a terrific friendly staff. They have a great comp breakfast spread with round-the-clock coca tea. And I think they even have art events at the hotel. My room was upstairs […] on the second floor and it was a loft style arrangement with a spiral staircase and beds tucked into the vaulted ceilings - very nice. No TV. I stayed in several hotels in Cuzco and this was the nicest. The Expedia deal made the hotel almost half price. Location was very good - maybe a little high up the hill for the more out-of-breath travelers, but smack between San Blas and the Plaza de las Armas. Les mer

A very pleasant hotel. Small and beautiful. Just down the street from one of the most expensive hotels in Cusco. Close to a fine museum, the square, and good restaurants. We required an early checkout to meet our trekking group and the staff took good care of us and the baggage we left while we were on the Inca Trail.
