The Balmoral Hotel - Harrogate

Lovely hotel and room but loud guests shouting between 3 till 4:30am ruined the stay. Wish the hotel could have done more to resolve this issue.

We wanted a romantic, upmarket night away and the Balmoral did not disappoint, it was just what we wanted in a hotel. Our room was lovely, warm and inviting, we booked a superior room and were pleased to have a chandeliered comfy place to stay, spotlessly clean throughout, with lovely fluffy robes and fantastically thick fluffy towels too. The bed was […] very comfortable, large in an elegant white french period style and that, coupled with the quietness of the hotel's location and the thick corridor carpeting, made for a great night's sleep. The room (and hotel) decor reminded me of Malmaison, all opulence, with beautiful elegant furniture and dramatic furnishings, but one which is much much better value for money and one we will return to. The hotel public areas again were very welcoming, all squashy sofas and a stylishly furnished bar area, however it was very quiet when we stayed. The garden area at the front seems a great, spacious spot for outside drinks in the summer, with lots of seating. The staff were without exception very friendly and welcoming, there is a general feeling about the place which makes for a relaxing stay, you get the impression nothing would be too much trouble. Breakfast was served in the restaurant area and was lovely, not hundreds of choices of hot food, but what there was was of an excellent quality, well presented and delicious. There is also a buffet for pastries, cereals, juices etc. Again, not massive, but enough to enjoy a hearty and varied breakfast. It was here we noticed how many people were staying in the hotel - it is not a massive place, but we were surprised at how peaceful our night was when we saw who had stayed - if you want a quiet night's sleep this is the place to be! Location wise, we enjoyed an easy stroll (10 mins max) into the centre of Harrogate and, given the disc/permit parking situation in the town, it was great to have free onsite parking at the hotel. Hotel? More like a good B&B. Staff polite, sometimes a little unprofessional in our opinion. Welcomed given key to room which was ready early, but no other information given by staff, or available in room that we could see about the hotel services apart from a breakfast menu. Room quite nice, clean, few little decorative faults, broken mirror, old […] looking bedside lamp shades, mould on shower door seal, which if dealt with would improve the room. Main complaint was the appalling lighting. It was a dull December weekend but the lighting in the room seemed very dull to us. In all the room lacked that little extra luxury we would expect for the rate we paid. Luxury toiletries are nice but in my opinion do not justify the room price! Cooked breakfast was as expected, nothing particularly special in our opinion. Staff seemed confused and some guests had to ask after a rather long wait to order their food. Little things like putting toast on the table and no butter so we had to ask for it and wait were frustrating. Had I been intending to have the continental breakfast I would have been sorely disappointed, no fresh fruit, 3 pastries left when we arrived, admittedly at the end of breakfast service but plenty of guests arrived after us. I was expecting the pastries to be replenished but they were not to my knowledge while we were there. A selection of small boxed cereals and a sorry looking bowl of museli and a good selection stewed dried fruits were available. Some items were supplied in pre-packaged individual pots. Again that little bit of luxury we expected was missing. The biggest insult however, bearing in mind the room rate we paid, was delivered on checking out. My husband had ordered a newspaper, a selection of papers available was listed, with no indication that he could see that this service was NOT included in the room rate. There wasnt much executive about the room: - it didn't have a bathroom door (just a saloon style door which didn't offer much privacy) - it wasn't very big, just enough space to walk round the bed and open the wardrobe door - the shower cubicle was about 3ft wide but the shower was poor - it barely got you wet and ran hot and cold On the plus side, […] the communal areas were well kept and the breakfast was good. We didn't try the bar as there was no one in it on the Saturday night so we went elsewhere to find some atmosphere. I was disappointed by the quality of the room. Les mer

Extremely pleased with Balmoral Hotel. The staff, the food, everything was perfect. If I'm in Harrogate next, I'm definitely staying in this hotel.

This lovely hotel lived up to our expectations. The room was fab with a four poster bed, large room and generous bathroom. An added bonus was the Molton Brown toiletries that were replenished during the afternoon! The staff were helpful and plesant and nothing seemed too much trouble. Good location for the conference centre and an easy walk into town. food was really good and the rooms have a quirkiness that makes the most of the old building. It's not corporate which for me, was part of the appeal.

Excellent room though access via staircases can be a little tight. Excellent restaurant. Attentive staff. Recommended.

Das Hotel war so ausgestattet wie beschrieben mit gutem alten englischem Charme in einer traditionellen Kleinstadt. Die Angestellten waren sehr zuvorkommen. Das Frühstück bestand aus einem Menü. Das traditionelle englische Frühstück sollte man unbedingt probieren, wenn man ein Fan davon ist. Frühstück und W-Lan waren im Preis inbegriffen im Gegensatz […] zur Buchungsbestätigung. Das war das erste Mal das mir so etwas passierte. Einziger Wehrmutstropfen das Fenster im Zimmer meiner Kollegin (Zimmer 7) konnte nicht geöffnet werden. Les mer
