Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa - Windermere

The room size is good enough, with a beautiful large window facing the lake. Breakfast was good. Although their staff at the restaurant are not experienced enough to serve/cater the guests. Staff are all friendly. Hotel Location is best that describes the hotel. I would defiantly come back here & recommend it to anyone.

Fantastic clean hotel, perfect location and great indoor pool. Customer service & food: zero. Went down to breakfast but were told by the awaiting restaurant manager(?) that we were half an hour too early and to go away. We waited nearby and just 5 minutes later another couple were let straight in and seated. Image how special we felt. This was followed […] by a very greasy breakfast, which we were already put off by the sniffing and snorting waiter who had obviously been allowed to serve food with a major flu/hangover. Stayed here for 1 night in Jan, beautiful hotel. Car valet system was bril, no worries for parking. Our room was great very specious and over looking the lake. My favourite has to be the spa and pool amazing amazing amazing. Recommended to all x

Clean modern hotel with the warm feel of a country house. Great amenities, very good central location in Bowness and right on the lake. Room was not ready upon (early) arrival but friendly staff offered to call me when the room was ready. Good varied breakfast.

Throroughly enjoyable stay. The hotel is by far the best located in Bowness - less than a minute's walk to the ferry launches and lovely pubs and restaurants. The hotel is very welcoming, and the concierge went out of his way to help us check-in. The spa was fantastic - lovely pool, with great sauna, steam room and ice room. Our room was nice and clean, […] however it only had a skylight window which was a shame, as you had to stand on a chair to be able to look out at the lake. The pillows on the bed were also far too soft for my liking. The other issue to be aware of is parking - the car park is a few hundred yards away, and you need the concierge's pass to access it, which is all very confusing. When we arrived at the hotel we were allocated room 117 which was charged at the standard bed and breakfast rate. I ordered a couple of drinks in the bar whilst I waited for my husband to check us in. The service was quite slow with just one member of staff waiting on and working behind the bar. The room itself was very poor, very small and crammed […] full of furniture, so much so you couldn’t open the wardrobe doors without doing a full move around of furniture. It was more the standard of a travel lodge rather than a 4 star hotel charging a high rate. The radiator was turned off and it took a long time to warm up. The remote control wasn’t working, I picked up the phone and pressed the reception button which failed to work, I then dialled “0”. No one answered it just rang out. There was no hot water. I was told that there would be no hot water at this time now 7pm as the hotel was full and the hotel cannot provide hot water to all rooms at peak times!! When we returned to the hotel around 11pm the hotel bar was shut and no drinks were available. We could hear loud music playing and presumed that it was perhaps a function in the hotel and that it would end around 12.30am, at 02.30 the music got louder. It turns out it is a bar next to the hotel, the music went on until 3am. My husband fed back our complaints to reception when we came to check out. The response was well it’s only my 2nd day!!! This is the 3rd time we have stayed in this hotel. The location is ideal, right on Lake Winderemere and next to all the local bars and restaurants. We had a lovely view of the lake from our room. The spa is also really nice. I would highly recommend this hotel.

A relaxing and welcoming hotel. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Room comfortable with excellent beds. The luxurious pillows provided a heavenly nights sleep. Lovely breakfast and lots to choose from. Set you up nicely for the rest of the day

Booked with Expedia and asked for a lake view room. Checked into hotel by receptionist who gave us no information whatsoever. No times for breakfast, no info on pool,spa or what time dinner was or whether we wanted to book ! We were allocated a room at the front of the hotel in a really small room, the main bedroom door did,nt even close properly. Bathroom […] was virtually a small cupboard. Asked to be moved and receptionist seemed very surprised ! He moved us to another room in the new part of the hotel & although it overlooked a car park,it was fine. It was our 30th wedding anniversary so not a great start to the weekend. It cost approximatley £280 for two nights. The drinks were way overpriced, £ 9.30 for a glass of wine & £ 6.30 for a pint. Plenty of bars & restaurants close by at a quarter of the price. On the whole not a bad hotel, good location but not up the standards of other McDonald hotels. Les mer

Lovely location right on the lake! Stayed for New Years Eve. Gala dinner was lovely but quite pricey at £90.00 for 6 courses! Staff helped us out as much as they could, with small misunderstanding about the room. All in all a pleasant stay!

We stayed here the weekend before Christmas. Our plan was to have a relaxing short break to recharge our batteries before the Christmas onslaught. We certainly got that. We found this hotel to be exceptionally comfortable and relaxing. The staff were fantastic and the facilities excellent.

I don't believe the Hotel is up to a 4 star standard. It is run down and the staff are not very friendly. It was a business stay so considering the hotel was only half full they should have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome instead of getting our backs up. The hotel was beautiful. The location was really ideal. Generally everything was fabulous. One of the people at the front desk wasn't very helpful...but other than that I loved this place!

The hotel was not far - only 2 minutes - from the lake cruises and motor boat hire. The room was fantastic. We asked for a Lakeside view and got it. However, we were on the ground floor so we could hear people walking to and from the lifts, and people walking on the first floor. So they need to make the rooms more sound proof really. The floor boards […] were very squeaky. The staff didn't appear to understand on some occasions, and I had problems with understanding their accent too. The waiter on the 1st day didn't explain to us how the breakfast works. He just told us to help ourselves to the buffet, and he'll come back for the order. So we didn't know that we were supposed to look at the menu, which was just a full Breakfast with optional fried bread, black pudding and beans. Spa was included. There was an aromatherapy room ,sauna and ice room, and a small swimming pool. All in all, it was good. Les mer

We had a disappointing start, with being told where our room was but not being shown to it, so no one offering to carry our luggage. Having just stayed in three other hotels en route back from Scotland which were less than half the price and where in every one we were shown to our room and had offers to carry our luggage, it was a bit of a shock! Apart […] from that we were happy however, with a lovely view over the lake in our room and particularly nice toiletries in the bathroom. Breakfast was good but we didn't have dinner in the hotel because the choice in Windermere itself for food is so good. At breakfast there were more staff in the dining room than guests, so the service was excellent. Wouldn't stay there again because we know that apart from the view there is far better value to be had elsewhere. Les mer

As soon as we arrived at the Hotel, the staff were very welcoming. I parked the car directly outside reception and the Valet immediately took the car 100 metres up the road to the hotel main car park. The standard of the room was excellent and larger than average. Located in a picturesque village, there are lots of restaurants to tempt you for an evening […] meal within a short walk. We only stayed for one night but what a great night it was. If I could complain at all it would be that we didnt really have view from our room but that didnt spoil our night. The Hotel is packed with history but at the same time has a modern feel. The staff are very friendly but remain completely professional. A lovely stay, but small things - that did not really affect the quality of our stay - tarnished the overall experience. For example dinner on the Friday night, my steak arrived cold. The waiter took it away, only for the same steak to be returned - "warmed up". I complained as it was tough and not very good to eat. I got a fresh steak and it was great. […] All's well that ends well, but effectively my wife and I had to eat alone - not quite the romantic 14th wedding anniversary meal! We had a lovely lazy afternoon in the hotel bar, and an excellent evening in Bowness at Postilion where the food was great! Other niggles, our room was a little tight, we had an executive room but I'm not sure you could tell so I'd stick to the standard if I were to stay there again. To summarise: great location, eat in Bowness restaurants they are excellent, and go for a standard room - the executive is just not worth the extra. Les mer

Found it hard to fault our 2 night stay, we were upgraded as soon as we arrived to a balcony room overlooking lake Windermeer. The room was well appointed and spotless! Having stayed at several hotels in the MacDonald chain, the rooms at MacDonald hotels are typically smaller than many hotels you go to. This is probably the reason the standard bed size […] is double rather than a larger model. however we did not feel cramped especially with the additional balcony to go out to. the Spa was great and pool not to warm for swimming as is often the case. The location was second to none,right on the banks of lake Windermeer and at the heart of a beautiful village (Bowness -on-Windermeer) there are plenty of shops and places to eat to keep you busy for an afternoon. The boat trips round the lake departed a hundred meters or so away from the hotel although we did not have time to try them on this occasion. OK so if I have to be picky, the shower was not a power shower but to be fair, was more than adequate and the main meal at the hotel was lacking the creative flair one might expect from a restaurant sporting a double rosette. But overall the staff, the tranquility as well as convenience of this hotel has left us wanting more and we will almost certainly be back. Les mer

well in the interest of fairness I have to say we didn't have a bad time BUT for the price we paid I have the feeling it just wasn't worth it in my opinion Good bits first: -Fab room and fantastic bed very nice view too -its locations is in the center of lake and everything is nearby without the need to drive -Staff are friendly and parking is great in […] my opinion Bad bits: -Only chosen the hotel because of the Spa and well Swimming Pool was freezing Cold and quite small (my local gym has a better pool).There are no Hot tub or Spa /Jacuzzi so after a cold swim you have the choice of steam room or dry sauna -I got the impression that Locals have the use of the facility as "health center" so it just doesn't feel very exclusive. -for the price of booking breakfast was just a very typical normal nothing impressive. in summary it didn't make us go Wow - my suggestion would be look at the alternative Spa facility in the lake which is cheaper or go expensive and have the spa in the room. Great Hotel. Great Restaurant too. Pity the lift in our block was out of order and we were on the 2nd floor, but there was another lift although it was in the other block. Valet Parking was a godsend ! Well positioned in the centre of town. Great location to tour the lakes and vicinity. Will definitely be back.

The hotel was in a great location with free parking. There were plenty of shops, pubs, bars and restaurants nearby and the lounge and restaurant have great views of Lake Windemere. The spa looked great although we didn't have treatments; we just used the pool/sauna/steam room etc The only downside was the temperature in our room. It was quite a small […] room and even with the radiator off and the heated towel rail on the lowest setting the room was sweltering which made a good night's sleep impossible. Despite being December, we had to sleep with the window as wide as it would open but still the temperature was excessive. Other than that, the hotel was great; nice breakfast, good facilities, we were able to check in early. We would visit again. Les mer

Bearing in mind that this is a 4* star hotel and that the price reflects this I was actually a bit disappointed with our stay. The bathroom extractor at first wasn't working then after 'being fixed' it stayed on permanently. There was no air conditioning in the bedroom and it was like a sauna. In the name of 'security' you couldn't open the window more […] than 3 inches so we basically stewed for our one night stay. We had a fab view of the lake (from bed!), plus the food was good (albeit a bit expensive). Some areas of the hotel are in need of a refit as they are showing their age. Sadly, the health spa and gym were closed when we arrived, something which took us by surprise as we expected to use them. I would recommend.

Arrived at hotel to be told no spa facilities as they had a fire. No prior notice of this and no offer of compensation. We had specifically booked the hotel for this. The main lounge area is its best feature, large bay windows over looking the lake. The room we had was comfortable until the night time to be kept awake all night by the bar/night club […] next door and the taxi rank outside the window. We asked to be moved rooms at 3am to be told by the night porter it wasn't possible. The next morning we spoke with the maanger and he delt with our complaints straight away and we moved rooms over looking the lake. Don't have a room over the entrance of the hotel otherwise you will get no sleep! Les mer
