Hotel Keen - Palo Alto

This hotel is centrally located for anybody visiting the Palo Alto area including Stanford. Very nice place and large rooms if you take the DeLuxe version. My only complaint, as an European, is the poor breakfast served at the hotel: Pastry as the only choice is not a good starter for the day. Hotel Keen is no exception from that rule.

The staff was very friendly and though small, the rooms were nice. The only thing that was a bit unusual was the curtain in lieu of a bathroom door. Would stay there again as it was a good value and not a generic Silicon Valley hotel. The friendliness of the people working there maded the difference. Also, the public lounge was well equipped.

I truely enjoyed it.The facilities are in excellent shape, the staff is genuinely friendly, and the location is right where we wanted to be.

Hotels.com says "complimentary parking" but there was no hotel parking. Parking was metered (2 hour) on the street or in a city lot and tough to get a spot. The hotel is close to a bar and there was a steady murmur of voices until 2 am on the weekend. All else about this hotel is fantastic, from the service to the complimentary breakfast.

My second time staying in Hotel Keen and good as always. Very convenient location within Palo Alto and parking is no problem with public carpark next door. Stylish and modern fittings with very friendly staff.

I found the hotel to have nice decor and was clean. It is in a perfect location too. We didn't have much of a view but for one night it was great. If you need privacy there is only a curtain separating the bathroom from the bedroom. Wasn't an issue for us but it may be for a new couple.

I arrived after 9pm to a startling question: "we are oversold, so would you mind moving to a different hotel?" I did mind, and apparently my room already had been assigned to me, so no move was necessary. I walked down the hall to find a tiny but tastefully appointed room. Wifi didn't work, but the Ethernet cable was operable. Sparkling white and clean, […] the room would do for one night. Small flat-screen TV had only analog channels - no HDTV here. Would I go back for a week? Doubtful, although the continental breakfast tastes better than what most hotels provide. And the location can hardly be trumped, unless one is willing to drop $100-200 more per night. Good for one person for one night? Yes. For 2 people? Depends on how close you are! Les mer

Everything about this place was "just right" for this picky traveler after finding the standard room to be just a bit to small. If you're comfortable living out of a suitcase, the standard room was fine, but I like to hang things up. It took a quick trip to the desk to upgrade to the deluxe room, which was "just right". I arrived at Palo Alto Station at 7 p.m. and already became dark. This was my first time to visit Palo Alto, so at first I was embarrassed which way to go. This hotel is located very near from the station, however, I could find it easily. The room is a little narrow, but for the stay by oneself, it's enough I think. Bed was very comfortable and I got a late checkout. The room was kept very clean by staff while I was away but was also very small. No view. The surrounding area was very walkable and lots of restaurants around ... little interesting options for shopping.

Perfect location. Outstanding hospitality- staff was very helpful and thoughtful. Breakfast - good variety, very much Like a B & B. Wine in late afternoon. Missed having a closet, luggage rack and bedside lamp. Room across from housekeeping noisy in morning.

The "deluxe" room is very small, with a tiny bathroom just off the entry door that a curtain instead of a bathroom door. Not exactly private, acoustically, and I could hear every noise everyone was making in their rooms. The light-switches were in strange and difficult-to-reach locations...one could turn off the reading lights fromt the since there […] were no table surfaces near the bed and the switch was way up on the middle of the wall separating the bed from the bathroom. The table or desk supplied to sit and work on one's laptop computer has a big overhanging cupboard whose edge is flush with the tabletop and optimally place to bang one's head when getting up from the desk. The color palette was grayish, and the room not particularly arty or even pleasant to the eye. Kind of depressing. A big warning should be given at booking--there is no hotel parking lot or facility, although you can park on the street or in the nearby public parking lot for free after 6 p.m. However, all of the parking is full due to the heavy dining crowd from 6-9:30 p.m. I had to wait until 10 p.m. to repark my car. Otherwise, the staff was nice, courteous, and watchful, and the place was clean. Very easy access to the downtown eateries, to Stanford, and to Caltrans. The bed was comfortable, although the pillows were not. Overall, I would recommend the hotel if it were cheaper, but not at the price I paid. Les mer

In the heart of Palo altyo is is convenient, caltrian 1 block and the general manager is very understanding person his name is Peter. Great Hotel to stay in.

This is a nice little find in the heart of Palo Alto, a block from the CalTrain and bus depot. Full renovated/remodeled just over a year ago, it has the feel of a small W Hotel. The hotel is a couple minutes walk from caltrain station. There are many less expensive restaurants around it. It's quite convenient. But, it's noisy a little bit at night.... If you want more quiet & relaxing space, cardinal hotel is better.

We booked this for my mother-in-law over Christmas. The shower in her room had no hot water. When she talked with the front desk she was told that she could go across the hall to an empty room to shower. She is elderly and not great at advocating for herself or dealing with changes of plans and going down to the desk in her robe every morning to get […] a key to the room across the hall to shower was too much for her. She had a cold shower each morning instead. My husband asked about getting a discount to compensate and was told that he would have to wait to speak with the manager after the holiday. When he went back to speak with them they said maybe they would credit her one day but this hasn't happened. Great location but the customer service is terrible. We have used this place to put up guests several times and as long as everything is fine, everything is fine. We are looking for a place that will make everything great even when things go wrong and this isn't it. I think it is time to go back to putting up our guests at the Westin. Les mer

Very contemporary boutique hotel in downtown Palo Alto...perfect walking distance to University Avenue and all the shops and restaurants. Small rooms but enough space for two. Breakfast in the morning and cookies at night...definitely would recommend!

My room was small and somewhat dark because the window faced the building next door, but it was also very quiet and absolutely clean and comfortable. If you're looking for a luxurious room to hang out in for a lot of the day, this is not your place. But if you're looking for a clean, quiet, well-located hotel, this is a good choice.

Within walking distance of all the key Palo Alto offices, restaurants and shops this is a great hotel from which to get to business meetings up and down the valley as well as visits to the local sites and San Francisco via 280,101 or Caltrain. With local restaurants and coffee bars on your doorstep there is no need to have the hotel provide its own […] restaurant or meeting spaces, nor does it and so you are not paying for something you don't use. For a European used to small rooms the room size is more than acceptable. The additional item of furnishing I would like to have had is a comfortable reading chair to complement the desk chair. I would also like to see a bed side lamp. I would be happy to return to the Hotel Keen. Lets hope it keeps delivering. Les mer

Close to Stanford University, walking distance to all the restaurants around University Ave in Palo Alto. No solid doors on bathroom was the only drawback.

Excellent small hotel, very helpful staff. Well situated both for Palo Alto downtown and Stanford University.

The best of the hotel is the location and the simplicity and cleanliness of the rooms. Half a block from Univ. Ave. (restaurants, movie theaters, etc) I was away all day so it worked great for me but I think the room is perfect for people traveling for work or business, alone or as a couple but it doesn't seem like a good choice for families. Mainly […] because of the size of the room (very small) and that I does not have recreational areas such as garden, pool or any other. The room is clean, functional and modern. Breakfast is OK, coffee, teas, juice and pastries (there was no bread or hot items). Simple but great for on the go. What I thought could improve is service. People in the front desk were friendly but on details I was disappointed. One example, they see me approaching the front door with my suitcase they do not come outside to help me with it and only opened the door when I waved at them. I call to ask for an extra pillow, half an hour later had to call again to remind them about it. Details, but overall I would recommend this hotel. I would go back. Les mer

Snug, chic, private boutique hotel a block and a half from the CalTrain stateion--which means it's a quick walk to the Stanford shuttles, as well. Good for a solo business traveller, as I agree with the reviewers who point out that a windowless room with only a curtain to the toilet/shower area is not for everyone. Very small rooms with no hanging closets but clean and new. Best benefit is walking distance to University Blvd restaurants and shops.

Excellent location. Very friendly and helpful staff. Didn't like the 3pm check-in but there was plenty to do in the area to keep me busy until then. The room was small but fine for me traveling alone. Loved the wall you can write on. Too bad you can't see what previous guest had written. Will definately stay there agian.

This hotel is next-door to a nightclub - something that the site does not note at all. None of the windows are soundproofed and the site also does not note this. 2 nites - NO SLEEP. Arriving at breakfast: 1. there is no cutlery 2. No butter/jam or condiments I think this sort of behavior is totally sub-standard. The Sheraton was the same rate - I […] should have stayed there. Pros: People were extremely friendly and so helpful! Hotel is in a great location, right in downtown. Convenient and free parking on weekends in a lot right next door. Cons: Small room, no bathroom door (only a curtain), thin ceilings (could hear vacuuming from upstairs) Would definitely recommend to friends if they don't mind a tiny room.

Comfortable well appointed hotel in downtown Palo Altto. Perfect for a business trip, although small rooms mean I'd be unlikely to recommend it for pleasure or a family trip.

it looked beautiful and was nice for the price. but the room's where almost impossible to lock because the doors would not close all the way. all the rooms have only one bed so make sure you dont mind sharing it if you are having a girls night out. we had 2 room's the first room they gave me was NOT CLEAN AT ALL!! with the second room we did not need […] the key to open the door.. it was open already... and because of this are neighbor was not a guest and stayed for free because they found the door open and walked in laughing about how they dont have to pay... the next day after a long night of dancing no one could take a shower because there was no hot water in any room. also they have no parking for your car. the 2 rooms we ended up with where okay in the end my party did not stay there long. i would not stay more than one night.we had rooms 209 and 215. The hotel is pretty small and rather nice. My room was a bit odd as it was on the first floor (no windows), and for some reason they put the heater/AC directly above my pillow. That meant that I was either cold or getting blasted by hot air all night. They had a nice breakfast and even wine at night. I'd recommend it because of its location and because […] they are really trying to be a very nice hotel. Hopefully, they'll figure out a way to work out some of these kinks. Les mer

Literally loved this place, and added it to my company list of hotels for business travel. It was a boutique, definitely not the big-chain feel of depressing assembly-line room lookalikes. The staff was friendly, the rooms delightfully quirky (amazing bed, great towels, great shower...even had a huge whiteboard as one wall, complete with EXPO markers!). […] I will definitely stay here again. I attended a three day event at Stanford and this is the perfect hotel for that: great 20 minute walk to center of campus along the palm boulevard, great restaurents just a block away, and I really liked the well designed modern rooms

Location was perfect for business purpose in Palo Alto/Menlo Park and proximity to great dining. Hotel was brand new, so room was clean and well appointed. Expect the rooms to be on the small side and the furnishings sparce (no closet space to hang clothes..and IKEA-like furniture). Nice clean (probably recently renovated) compact room in converted 3-storey commercial building. Seems like many rooms don't have a view except into a light well. Our second floor corner room had translucent glass in the window - opening the window gave a glimpse into an adjoining parking lot. When we arrived, we were given our room key and as I walked into our room, there were towels on the floor, sheets on the floor and house running in through the window. I was given another room, which was small, no closet, no real room, and not a comfortable bed at all. Shortly after we got settled in, a bar that sided next to the hotel began playing […] noisy music until last call (1:30pm). The breakfast wasn't great at all, just basic. The only good thing was being able to write on the walls with dry erase makers. The room itself was nicely decorated, and definitely renovated, but way over priced. The only plus was the location. This hotel is worth every penny for its location. Can't beat it, walking distance to everything in Downtown Palo Alto. The staff is professional, more then helpful. The hotel itself is modern, chic, and presents well. The rooms themselves are sparse, and in my opinion they did the most they could with such little space. They are a little cramped, […] but if you're looking for clean linens a bed, and minimalist appeal this is it. The bed is comfortable, the rooms are playful, and everything is not only clean but just works - functional. However, with this being said the walls are more or less paper thin. Bistro 412 is adjacent and if you're here on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening plan not to sleep till after 2am. Finally, make sure to close the doors - they are not heavy enough to automatically close like most hotels. The latch catches too easily and if you're not careful the door won't fully close. Other then this, Four Season's comfort without the Four Season's cost. Les mer

I purchased this room for a friend who was taking her daughter for cancer treatments at Stanford. The rooms are small and they couldn't fit a rollaway in the room, nor did they have a rollaway because they had just opened. However, in true kindness they comped a room for her daughter so that she could have a room of her own. That's "paying it forwa […] rd." Les mer
