The common showers and bathrooms were very clean and the rooms as well. The noise from the pub below is surpisingly undisturbing. I found the whole stay was as just what you expect from such a place.

Title says it all. You get what you pay for. The service was very friendly and accommodating, room was comfortable albeit a little noisy due to traffic but we did have window open for fresh air. I would recommend this if you are just staying overnight in Cambridge and want somewhere cheap within easy reach of the city centre. A room above a pub certainly negates the need of a designated driver, but a room, however comfortable, should rate no more than two stars when there is no private bath.

In a nutshell we got there early and no one was able to get us the key to our room so had to come back later! Then there was loud noise from the pub till the early hours

It's above a pub, so don't expect much quiet before 12. But it's warm and well kept and good for the price.

the pictures on hotels.com were misleading. the bed linen smelt like it had just been sprayed with febreeze, had to share a shower and bathroom. very disappointed. stayed in much better accomodation for less money.

arrived luckily at lunchtime and was most dissapointed! the place was not welcoming and was made to feel very unwelcome. the room was small and shared with 2 other rooms a toilet and bathroom the rooms were located on the top of some fire escape type outside stairs and as a lone women staying on own it felt uncomfortable and intimerdated. Great place for student/young travelierson a budget. Not at all great for adults. Room is just barely fine, but access, amentities, ambiance, etc. are for partyinmg kids, not adults.

There was some n major reconstruction of the garden going on which ended at 11.30 pm and started at 7am in the morning. Honestly, I do not understand why this hotel took bookings for this reconstruction period. Total waste of money..

Friendly, helpful staff, good vegetarian meals. Room was basic but fine for the price. Overnight parking not straightforward in immediate vicinity - in the end I paid to park at a nearby pub. Plenty of other pubs nearby, and only 15 min walk to lots of pubs and restaurants. Would stay again.

We did not stay after all, sadly we did not feel too comfortable there. Would have preferred it if the main door had a lock on it, only the room had a lock. A party with lots of people shouting, was just at the bottom of the stairs. Bad choice, will be more selective next time. I really did not want to waste the money spent on this. Depends on what you want. My need is for quiet space near the university and the location is good, but live music is loud and the door locking system is very percussive so if other lodgers come in at 1am the slamming doors are all part of the shared experience. The Portland arms is a lovely, well located hotel with three rooms about it sharing a bathroom. Although we selected it knowing it had a shared bathroom and it was a cheap room we were a little disappointed with the room. The decor didn't do it any justice, it was very noisy in the morning with doors slamming and the staircase squeaking and the shower […] was practically unusable due to it being so hot and unadjustable. The place is much better than how it looks in the photos. Everything was clean, the people were incredibly friendly. It's a little bit of a walk from the town center, but it gives you a chance to walk past the river. Lovely place, will be staying again.

Friendly service, clean rooms. very well positioned for all the must see sights. Was unaware that it was a shared bathroom but as there are only 3 rooms this was not a problem. Would and am planning to stay again.

Enjoyed the bustle and musical entertainment and the beer was well-kept and courteously pulled. Didn't sample the food but it looked good coming from kitchen. Bar staff friendly and helpful with car parking suggestion though no parking owned by the pub. Lots of on street spaces nearby. Reasonable rate and suited my purpose ideally. Very noisy - not just pub noise from outside, but neighbouring rooms. Thin walls and loud televisions. But, location was great and so was the price, so you get what you pay for, I suppose.

I was a little skeptical when I first got here, it's a pub right on a busy intersection. I had to check-in at the bar and then lead outside. The gentlemen who checked me in was extremely pleasant. The room (#1) was very clean. I could do without the humongous dresser in there and swap it for a desk. The rooms are directly over a pub, I thought it was […] going to keep me up at night but I did not hear anything from downstairs, there was the England/Croatia Soccer game on one night, and a live band on the next, neither were bothersome. However, there is an outdoor patio and that can be loud for some people, I did not mind it because it was white noise, it ended promptly at 1am like the bar-keep said it would. Here is my only complaint, there is no A/C (which is not surprising in Europe), I am fine with having my windows open to let in fresh, cool air, but it's not so great when the staff stand directly under your window smoking. I ended up having to close my windows because the smoke from the patio area was getting too overwhelming, which then made the room hot. Perhaps you could provide a fan for room #1. It is within walking distance to the city centre, keep this in mind if you plan on sight-seeing, it is located on the other side of Victoria Park, which is connected to the city centre and the river. Please know that you are staying right above not just a pub, but a "pub and live music venue." We stayed during the week, which I thought would be fairly quiet, but there were three nights of loud live music (out of four total). Things did quiet down though by 11:30 so it was fine. Stayed here for one night while visiting my old college. Very central location, short walk to the centre of the city and the river. Found a spot to park for free on the street nearby. This hotel is perfect for its quality/price ratio. The only thing was that we went to Cambridge to do an exam and the night before it was Friday which meant a lot of noise in the pub downstairs. This is not a hotel. This is a pub with a bed. Entrance via fire exit in the back garden. Shared bathroom and toilet. Unnecessary additional unclean bed-couch leaving no space left in the room. Very noisy. Excluding breakfast and also no option for breakfast, there is nobody in the morning when the pub is closed. The room was really small and had no heat. It was surprisingly quite for being above a pub. The food was incredible. The prices were great for the food, and it tasted great too. Overall, it's a pretty good place to crash.

Make sure to bring your industrial-strength ear plugs, eyeshades, and maybe your own pillow . Do not bring children and if you have any trouble with heights or stairs, forget it. Otherwise, the place filled my need for a central Cambridge place to lay my head that wouldn't cost arms and legs. The hotel is very cozy as well as the pub downstairs. The music ends at a decent time and a good night sleep is ensured. Good value for money (at least for the online offer i fount). The bathrooms had just been refurbished and in excellent status.

This was pretty basic accommodation at a reasonable price. It's a few minutes walk through a park to central Cambridge. Our room was tiny - barely room for a bed and a dresser, with nowhere to hang clothes. The bathroom was shared with two other rooms. The rooms are above a popular pub with outdoor drinking, so there was a lot of noise until closing […] time. The staff were friendly and helpful. I was surprised that this accommodation was on Expedia at all as it was merely one of three rooms up a fire-escape above a pub with a raucous disco each night. The lack of an en suite bathroom seemed very old fashioned and annoying too as was the failure to make the bed, renew the towels etc for night 2.

Good pub, nice staff, basic room, absolutely rubbish bed. It's about as comfortable as sleeping on rubble. If you want somewhere to crash and don't want to pay through the nose, this is fine. If you like camping, it'll be fine!
