I stayed in Room 811 and developed severe respiratory symptoms: hoarse throat, difficulty breathing, and voice loss. These worsened daily in the room but improved outside. By Day 4, my throat swelled so severely I couldn’t breathe and had to be rushed to the hospital. I am a healthy, athletic 30ish-year-old, and was diagnosed with laryngitis caused by mold poisoning in the room. I required emergency treatment, including an injection to open my airway, and now need ongoing medication, which has not only ruined my plans on the island but also ruined my Christmas plans back home, as I need to recover for another week under medical advice.
On Day 3, I went to the front desk to report my difficulty breathing and said that something in the room might be causing it. They ignored the issue but did honor my request to shut down the room AC. However, they failed to act promptly to address the root cause—mold in the room—or to change my room despite my worsening symptoms. This negligence put my health further at risk and led to a medical emergency.
The hotel’s maintenance staff later admitted that mold is a recurring issue in Room 811, posing serious health risks. Initially, the staff assured me they would cover my medical bills. After my treatment, Laura López attempted to backpedal on this. The hotel finally reimbursed the bill but refused any further compensation. Laura was rude and ridiculed my condition, told me to write a bad review “because it won’t affect them eitherway”
