Punta Cana is probably the first place that comes to mind when you think about taking a trip to the Dominican Republic. The town on the far eastern shore of the Caribbean island is famous for the many beautiful beaches around it, most of which are lined with luxurious beachfront hotels and resorts. It’s so popular that, despite its comparatively small size, it has its own international airport to save visitors the 179 km drive from Santo Domingo – the airport receives more flights each year than the capital.
The attractions and activities in Punta Cana mostly revolve around the beautiful blue seas off its white-sand beaches. These include swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, dolphin-spotting, windsurfing and just cruising over the calm waters while enjoying the tropical climate. If you want a break from this vision of paradise, you’ll find casinos, bars, ecological reserves, golf courses and adventure centres inland. You could quite easily spend a few weeks in the Dominican Republic without once leaving Punta Cana… and never get bored.
