Siena

What you need to know before you go

The city of Siena in Tuscany is notable for its wealth of brick buildings dating to the medieval period, its Gothic town hall and the Torre del Mangia 14th-century tower. The city centre is the Piazza del Campo, a major public square out from which the 17 historic districts extend. Historic attractions abound here, including the Romanesque-Gothic architecture of the Duomo di Siena cathedral, the Piccolomini Library, the Porta Tufi monastery, Castello di Belcaro castle, the Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico and Fortezza Medicea.

For those interested in local culture, the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena art gallery houses Sienese masterworks. At the Museo dell’Opera delle Metropolitana, works of art and architectural fragments from the Duomo of Siena are on display. The Salvador Dali Siena: da Galileo Galilei al Surrealismo showcases Salvador Dali’s interest in the sciences. The region also has a vibrant wine culture and you’ll find tastings of outstanding local vintages at wineries like Terra di Seta, Azienda Agricoa Montechiaro di, Tenuta di Trecciano and Fattoria Lornano.
