Calle Huertas is a main street in the downtown Centro district of Madrid, Spain, reknowned for its connection to famed literary figures and other artistic aspirations. Originally only farmland, the street obtained its name from the prevalence of orchards, gardening and fishing nearby.
Development of Calle Huertas began in the 17th century, attracting playwrights such as Lope or Ramon de la Cruz, renowned bullfighters such as Pepe Hillo, and legends of the writer Jose Cadalso wandering the street looking for his late lover, the famous actress Maria Ibanez.
