Chester

What you need to know before you go

The north-west city of Chester boasts layers of fascinating history, whether it's the sections of sandstone wall or amphitheatre left from by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago, the slanted half-timber Tudor houses or the rows of elegant Victorian terraces.

The city is packed with things do to, like watching horses stomp across the finishing line at Britain's oldest racecourse or stepping back in time at the 1,000-year-old Chester Cathedral. Alternatively, you could photograph the Eastgate Clock built to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victorian in the late 19th century or take the kids to Chester Zoo to spot more than 500 critters.
