Northumberland is one of the largest counties in North East England, located on the Anglo-Scottish border. Hadrian’s Wall is a significant landmark in Northumberland – the 73-mile-long fortification with ancient turrets, forts and towers dates back to AD 122. Medieval castles dotting the county also make for beautiful photos and serve to remind us that battles and sieges were part of Britain’s rather turbulent past.

Miles of hiking trails cut through deep valleys and rugged moorland, most of which are part of the Northumberland National Park. Summer is a great time to enjoy over 30 miles of beaches and seaside towns along the Northumberland Coast.

Newcastle upon Tyne lies at the heart of north-east England along the banks of the River Tyne. Its thriving student population gives the city an unrivalled energy and some legendary nightlife. The music scene is centred around the Metro Radio Arena or O2 Academy where big-name headliners are hosted.

Away from the student scene, the city has an achingly elegant side and among its rows of handsome Victorian and Georgian buildings you'll can linger of a beer in one of the cosy pubs, nab tickets for a performance at the Theatre Royal or dive into the Laing Art Gallery to see centuries-old British paintings.
