Midtown Miami is one of the small yet hip neighbourhoods in the city, sandwiched between Miami’s 2 most iconic art districts. Midtown lies just north of Downtown Miami and is bounded by the street-art-famous Wynwood to its west, luxurious waterfront Edgewater to its east, and chic Design District to its north.
The area itself is like a town centre complex, dotted with luxurious buildings and with an upscale shopping feel to it. The Shops at Midtown shopping centre serves as the focal landmark of the neighbourhood. It also offers good-value shopping options, such as markets and factory outlets.
Hotels in the area also follow the chic and contemporary style and vibes of Midtown. Most have lobbies filled with colourful art and with walls reflecting Midtown’s as well as neighbouring Wynwood’s urban art and Design District’s fashionable scenes.

What are the highlights and features of Midtown Miami?
Beyond its grand mall complex, you’ll find a few other hip spots to dine, drink or chill. On NE 2nd Avenue, there’s the cosy New Orleans-style wine bar Lagniappe where you can choose bottles of fine wine and build your own cheese and cured meat plates to enjoy as well as barbecue and live music every night surrounded by its chic decor. For great Italian, there’s Salumeria 104 specialising in cured quality cold cuts.
Sharing the art scene of its 2 famous neighbours, Midtown also has a few cool art galleries, such as Gary Nader Art Gallery with its sculptures and Picassos and Coral Contemporary Art Gallery with its colourful series of paintings.
As the sun sets over Miami, you can drive down to Wynwood and check out the movies at the Carpool Cinema Wynwood movie theatre. Afterwards, hit the straightforwardly named Prohibition Restaurant and Speakeasy on North Miami Avenue for cocktails and comfort food – their lobster mac and cheese and Wagyu skirt steaks are must-tries.
Where to shop in Midtown Miami?
The Shops at Midtown Miami on North Miami Avenue is the main shopping hub of this compact Miami neighbourhood. Even so, it’s quite a large urban shopping complex that features over 50 retailers and restaurants. You’ll find a Target as well as other popular stores like Nordstrom Rack, Marshalls, a GUESS Factory Store and furniture store chain West Elm.
Besides shopping, over a dozen different restaurants won’t let you go hungry – there are options for dine-in or takeaway right along Buena Vista Boulevard that borders the mall’s outdoor atrium. Among the many, Tap 42 Craft Kitchen & Bar is a sophisticated gastropub while Ichimi MIA is a good spot for a hearty bowl of Japanese ramen.
The Shops at Midtown Miami is also big on regular events, with its central outdoor lawn area frequently hosting everything from moonlit movie nights to community markets and weekend yoga. The palm-lined Promenade within the Shops at Midtown Miami is a pleasure to spend an afternoon stroll through.

Good to know about Midtown
Midtown is a 10-minute drive north of Downtown Miami and about 5 miles east of South Beach over the Intracoastal Waterway. The famous street-art filled Wynwood Walls is only a 10-minute stroll southwest of Midtown, via North Miami Avenue and Northwest 28th Street.
There aren’t clear borders between Midtown and its neighbouring areas. Just a field trip north from Midtown is the Design District whose streets are lined with more fancy flagship boutiques such as Prada and Yves Saint Laurent, or highlights such as Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Miami as well as the chef-centric St. Roch Market food hall to explore.
