Established in 1924, the fine-art museum is one of the country's largest art museums and the 12th-largest in the world by gallery area.

The largest parts of the museum’s galleries consist of Italian Renaissance paintings, French Impressionism, photography, African and pre-Columbian gold, European and American decorative arts, American art, and post-1945 American and European painting and sculpture.
